Murphy underwent hip surgery in September. It sounds like there’s a good chance he’ll be unavailable on Opening Day, but hopefully for not too much longer than that. If the Braves do grow more concerned about Murphy’s readiness, they could add a modestly priced DH-type like Rhys Hoskins, Miguel Andujar or Rowdy Tellez. Fortunately, those kinds of players tend to sign pretty late. If Murphy does prove good to go, then then plan would be for he and Drake Baldwin to share time between catcher and DH.

Murphy also scored on Jurickson Profar’s go-ahead single to center after walking in the eighth. He was starting for just the second time in six games, as the Braves have stopped giving either of their catchers time at DH with Marcell Ozuna having resumed playing every day. Ozuna, though, is struggling of late, which might open the door some. Murphy is batting .209/.313/.429 with 16 homers in 319 plate appearances for the season.

Murphy got the Braves on the board with an RBI double off of Jack Leiter in the second inning that pulled them to within two runs at 3-1. That would be as close as they would get. Murphy had a 106.1 mph double in the seventh inning of the game and then rocked a 411-foot solo home run in the ninth that left the bat at 103.6 mph. The veteran now has 13 home runs and 31 RBI on the season while splitting time with rookie Drake Baldwin. There have been some trade rumors swirling around Murphy, and a new home might be best for his fantasy value. It’s tough to use him if he remains on the short side of a platoon in Atlanta.

Murphy gave Atlanta plenty of breathing room off with a slam off Jordan Romano turned turned a 2-1 lead into a 6-1 cushion. The backstop has gone deep 10 times in 2025, but it’s the first time he’s homered since May 29. Considering his previous career numbers, it wouldn’t be a surprise at all if Murphy went on a power run in the summer months.

Murphy didn’t start the game, but he laced a three-run double off of Joey Wentz to drive in all three of Atlanta’s runs and tie the game at 3-3 in the eighth inning. Murphy has been splitting time with rookie Drake Baldwin, and these were his first RBIs since April 28th, so it was a much-needed big hit for the veteran.

Atlanta put up five in the eighth inning, and Murphy’s homer turned a 4-3 game into a 7-3 cushion. The Cardinals needed all of those runs with St. Louis scoring three off an ineffective Raisel Iglesias. Murphy is now up to five homers, 11 RBI and a .500 slugging percentage. The counting stats are more impressive when you consider the backstop missed the first week-plus with injury.

Murphy has been on an absolute tear, going deep four times in just six contests since returning from a season-opening stint on the injured list. The 30-year-old backstop hasn’t really made any changes besides wearing glasses for the first time in his career. It seems to be paying off since he’s posted a sky-high 1.203 OPS since making the switch.
