Montes De Oca passed through waivers unclaimed after losing his spot on Arizona’s 40-man roster. The 26-year-old righty made exactly one relief appearance last season for the Diamondbacks prior to undergoing back surgery.

Montes De Oca recently underwent back surgery, and is out for the foreseeable future. He’ll be eligible to come off the 60-day injured list at the beginning of August, but there’s no guarantee he’ll be ready to roll when that occurs.

The surgery could cost Montes De Oca the rest of his season. The 25-year-old was placed on the injured list June 10 with inflammation in his back, and at the very best, the right-hander won’t be back for the Diamondbacks’ bullpen until near the end of the summer.

Montes De Oca was with Arizona over the weekend but didn’t pitch. He was briefly sent back to Triple-A but then recalled on Monday when Kendall Graveman went on the IL. However, Montes De Oca felt discomfort in his elbow on Monday and was not available to pitch. Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said, “his concern is high.” We’ll have to wait for the MRI results to know more, but the Arizona bullpen is not in good shape right now.

Montes De Oca was up with Arizona over the weekend, but didn’t make an appearance. The 25-year-old takes over Kendall Graveman’s spot in the Diamondbacks’ bullpen after posting a solid 4.07 ERA across 24 1/3 innings (17 appearances) this season at the Triple-A level.
