The procedural move frees up a spot on New York’s 40-man roster for newly acquired outfielder Austin Slater. The 29-year-old right-hander underwent an internal brace procedure earlier this month and is expected to be sidelined until the second half of next season.

Schmidt added that he’s facing an 11-13 month return timeline following the less invasive procedure, which puts him on track to return to New York at some point in the second half of next season.

The procedure will be performed by Dr. Keith Meister. Schmidt will obviously miss the remainder of the 2025 season and most of the 2026 campaign as well while recovering from the procedure. Expect him to be moved to the 60-day injured list in the coming days to free up a spot on the team’s 40-man roster. Cam Schlittler will be given the first opportunity to hold down Schmidt’s spot in the Yankees’ rotation.

It’s a brutal development for the Yankees, and fantasy managers alike, as Schmidt had pitched to a strong 3.32 ERA across 78 2/3 innings (14 starts) this season before hitting the injured list earlier this week with forearm tightness. The 29-year-old’s absence puts some additional strain on New York’s rotation heading towards the trade deadline. Allan Winans and Cam Schlittler are the most likely candidates to fill his rotation spot. Given the timing of the procedure, Schmidt is unlikely to make it back until the late stages of the 2026 season.

The Yankees didn’t wait for the results of an MRI to make the move. Schmidt left last night’s game early after giving up three runs in three innings against the Blue Jays. Allan Winans figures to take his spot in the Yankees rotation next week.

The 29-year-old hurler was pulled from Thursday’s start against the Blue Jays after three innings due to tightness in his forearm. Anytime forearm and MRI are mentioned in the same sentence, there’s reason for concern. With the All-Star break upcoming, you’d think that Schmidt would land on the injured list and miss his next start at an absolute minimum here. Look for the Yankees to provide an update on his status after Friday’s exam.

The 29-year-old right-hander had allowed three runs on four hits and a pair of walks over his three frames prior to exiting. He’ll almost certainly head for additional evaluation to determine what exactly is going on there. Expect the Yankees to provide an update on his status as soon as more information becomes available.

Schmidt’s scoreless streak reached 24 innings before a Brent Rooker solo shot in the fourth inning today. It looked like that might be it for the A’s, but after two walks in the sixth, Nick Kurtz pounced on a weak cutter for a three-run shot. Schmidt struck out seven and allowed just two other hits, both singles. Still, he fell to 4-4 with a 3.09 ERA. He’ll take on the Jays next.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone told reporters they’re being cautious with Schmidt and will give him some extra rest before his next start. The decision bumps former prospect Will Warren up to Friday’s series opener at Yankee Stadium. It doesn’t sound like Schmidt is in danger of landing on the injured list, but fantasy managers should keep an eye on his status. He tossed seven hitless innings over the weekend against the Orioles in his previous start.

Schmidt was dominant on the mound on Saturday, tossing seven no-hit frames against the Orioles. He walked two batters and struck out five before ending his day at 103 pitches after the seventh. J.T. Brubaker would surrender the team’s first hit in the eighth. Schmidt has now gone three straight starts without allowing a run. The 29-year-old right-hander will take a 2.84 ERA, 1.06 WHIP, and a 65/26 K/BB ratio across 69 2/3 innings into a start against the Athletics in New York on Friday.

Another scoreless start for Schmidt. He gave up three runs in the first against the Guardians on June 4, but that’s the only time in his last four outings that he’s been scored upon. Unfortunately, he went without any run support tonight, so he remained 3-3 with a 3.16 ERA through 11 starts. He’ll face the Orioles on Saturday.

Schmidt did allow three walks, but those free passes were left stranded. Both hits he allowed were singles, as the 29-year-old has the Kansas City lineup off-balance and guessing for the overwhelming majority of the outing. Schmidt now has an ERA of 3.60 and a K/BB ratio of 57/24 over his 55 innings. He gets the Angels next week; a lineup that he fired six shutout innings against the last time he faced them at the end of May.

It looked like it’d be an ugly start for Schmidt after he walked Steven Kwan to begin the game and then Angel Martínez, of all people, hit a long home run right after. The Guardians tacked on another run during that first inning and had four hard-hit balls in all. Yet, Schmidt settled in well afterwards and didn’t allow another run. Still, that first inning proved costly and the sweeper-heavy Schmidt continues to have trouble with left-handed batters. Schmidt is lined up for a two-start week coming up against the Royals and Red Sox with both starts on the road.

Schmidt scattered four hits throughout his six frames, and only one of those was an extra-base knock; a double by Yoan Moncada. The 29-year-old struck out four in an effort that wouldn’t be described as dominant, but he was in complete control while throwing 69-of-99 pitches for strikes. Schmidt will take a 3.95 ERA into a scheduled tilt against the Guardians next week.

There had to be at least one scenario in the Juan Soto trade talks that included Schmidt going to San Diego and Michael King staying put, perhaps leading to a reversal of tonight’s matchup. The Padres are certainly happy with their return, but Schmidt and King pitched to a draw tonight, with Schmidt striking out four and walking one. Schmidt, who had this outing pushed back a few days by side soreness, will make his next start either Sunday in Sacramento or Monday in Seattle.

It sounds like a precautionary decision since Yankees manager Aaron Boone told reporters Schmidt underwent an MRI on Friday that didn’t reveal any structural damage and he expects him to start on Tuesday against the Padres. The Yankees can’t really afford to take any chances with their razor-thin starting pitching depth, so he’ll get a few extra days of rest before taking the ball again. It could turn into a potential injured list situation, if Schmidt is still experiencing soreness later this weekend, but fantasy managers shouldn’t be overly concerned at the moment. It’ll be soft-tossing lefty Ryan Yarbrough taking the ball on Saturday against the division-rival Rays to kick-off a bullpen game.

No word yet on the reason for the decision. There should be an update on his status shortly. It’ll be Ryan Yarbrough taking the ball to open a bullpen game for New York on Saturday afternoon in his place.

The 29-year-old hurler racked up six strikeouts on the night but also issued four walks which led to an elevated pitch count and cost him a shot at a victory in this one. The lone tally against him came on a solo blast off the bat of Anthony Santander in the third inning. Schmidt generated 14 swings and misses on 90 pitches in the ballgame — seven of those on his knuckle curve — while registering a strong CSW of 34 percent. Still in search of his first victory on the season, Schmidt will carry a 5.52 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and a 15/9 K/BB ratio (14 2/3 innings) into Saturday’s matchup against the Rays.

Schmidt struck out seven with 13 whiffs and a fine 33 percent CSW. He also gave up just four hard-hit balls. Alas, those four hard-hit balls produced two homers and two doubles. Schmidt possesses a 7.45 ERA after two starts back from the IL, but there should still be some mixed-league value here. he’ll face the Blue Jays next.

It was Schmidt’s first start of the 2025 season, and it went fine. It didn’t go great, it didn’t go terribly, it went fine; especially considering it was that first outing after missing the first few weeks with his shoulder issue. He allowed four hits with a pair of walks and an equal number of strikeouts, and threw 73 pitches. He’ll make his second start against the Guardians next week, assuming everything checks out fine with this outing.

It’s merely a procedural move as Schmidt will take the ball on Wednesday night against the Royals for his highly-anticipated season debut after missing the first three weeks of the season due to a shoulder issue. The 29-year-old righty was putting together a legitimate breakout campaign last year before missing nearly three months with a late-May lat strain. He should be rostered in all fantasy formats.

We knew Schmidt would make his next start in the majors, but it’s now been officially confirmed that he’ll take the ball for Wednesday’s series finale against Kansas City at Yankee Stadium. The 29-year-old righty looked ready to go in a handful of minor league rehab outings and should be rostered in all fantasy formats. He appeared to be on the verge of a sustained breakthrough last year before suffering a lat strain in late May that cost him nearly three months.

Schmidt has looked sharp in his rehab outings, and the 29-year-old will be a major upgrade for the Yankees’ rotation. Whether the start comes Tuesday or Wednesday, the right-hander will be facing off against the Royals, and he’s worth a glance as an option for those needy for pitching help in the early portion of 2025.
