Swanson is still tied for 14th in the majors with 26 runs scored and tied for 22nd with 25 RBI, but his average is back down to .202 at the moment. He’s 4-for-26 with no extra-base hits this month. That he’s been a valuable fantasy shortstop this year has as much to do with his teammates as it does with him.

Swanson returned to Chicago’s lineup for Friday’s series opener after missing just one game with left glute cramps that forced him to leave Wednesday’s game against the Padres. It doesn’t appear to be a concern moving forward.

Swanson should be considered day-to-day, but he was always likely to sit with a day game after a night game. Matt Shaw will start at second base and bat seventh with Nico Hoerner sliding over to shortstop. Seiya Suzuki will also get a day off, with Michael Conforto in right field and batting sixth.

There’s really no other way to describe it. Swanson is presumably day-to-day heading into Wednesday’s series finale. The 32-year-old shortstop was 1-for-2 with his second stolen base of the season prior to leaving the contest.

Swanson’s triple should have been caught by Andy Pages, but it was a well-hit ball to the wall in left-center. His homer off Tanner Scott in the ninth went 413 feet to left. Although he’s mostly batting ninth at the moment, Swanson is tied for eighth in the majors with 21 RBI and tied for fifth with 22 runs scored.

Swanson has mostly been hitting in the lower third of the Cubs order, and we say mostly about “hitting” as the walkoff upped his seasonal line to just .193/.333/.386. At least the power is still there, but Swanson’s got just one stolen base. He’s more of a quality third middle infielder in deeper leagues than a starting fantasy shortstop at this point.

Swanson is batting just .192 this season, but five of his 14 hits have been homers, and he’s up to 20 runs scored and 15 RBI in 22 games, even though he’s currently the Cubs’ No. 9 hitter. The homer tonight was his 1,200th career hit and gave him 700 career runs scored.

Swanson was responsible for Chicago’s lone runs against Phillies ace Cristopher Sánchez for six innings when he took the southpaw deep in the fourth inning for his third long ball of the season. The 32-year-old shortstop is hitting .173 (9-for-52) with three homers, nine RBI and one steal through 16 games.

Swanson got his second homer of the season with a solo blast off Bubba Chandler in the third. The 32-year-old also drew a pair of walks, and scored on both of those free passes. Swanson is now slashing just .163/.311/.308 on the season, but it’s nice to see some reminders that he’s a competent player with the stick.

Swanson got off to a fast start this spring, but he cooled as March went along and has gotten even worse of late; he’s 3-for-21 with no extra-base hits through seven games. He did fire off his hardest swing of the year today, but all that got him was a 132-foot popup. His early bat speed numbers are down from last year, and he’d already lost some ground there from 2024 to 2025.

Swanson appears locked in at the plate this spring, batting .467 with a pair of homers through six games. The 32-year-old veteran has often felt like a player who quietly produces while fantasy managers chase louder profiles elsewhere. That may start to change after he delivered his first career 20-homer, 20-steal campaign last season. Players like Swanson tend to live in a strange space in fantasy baseball — too steady to generate hype, but too productive to ignore once the season is actually underway.

Swanson singled off of Ryne Nelson in the opening inning, but was left stranded there. He then strolled to the dish in the third and pulverized a Spencer Giesting sinker for a 375-foot (100.2 mph EV) two-run shot that increased the D’Backs’ advantage to 4-0. Swanson has been absolutely locked in at the plate to start the spring, hitting .500 (5-for-10) with a pair of homers and five RBI.

The homer came off Logan Allen in the first. It was his first spring home run since 2023, as he went without one in 75 at-bats the last two years.

Swanson wound up 2-for-17 with no RBI and nine strikeouts in the NLDS and 4-for-26 with one RBI and 15 strikeouts between his two postseason series this year. That’s a tough way to end another fine season in which he went 20/20 for the first time and finished with a 105 OPS+ that’s several points better than his career mark of 96.

It’s Swanson’s first 20-steal season and, thus, his first 20/20 season. Swanson had just 40 steals in his first six seasons in the bigs, but he’s up to 66 in his last four years.

Swanson got the party started early with a three-run homer off an ineffective Jake Irvin in the first inning. That gives him 22 homers on the campaign, while the stolen base is his 12th. It’s the first homer in September for the 31-year-old after hitting five in August. You can do better, you can definitely do worse.

Swanson’s homers came off objectively two of the worst pitchers in baseball in Germán Márquez and Antonio Senzatela, but count just the same. The 31-year-old has now homered 21 times and driven in 65 runs while forging a slash of .251/.300/.428. Add in 10 stolen bases, and Swanson has put together a solid — if unspectacular — fantasy campaign in 2025.

Swanson was actually just 2-for-9 in the series, but he made those hits count. He’s 6-for-39 with a 16/1 K/BB over his last 11 games, dropping his average to .245 and his OBP to an uncharacteristic .294. Because he’s not walking much, his OBP is down 27 points from his career mark, even though his average is down just seven points.

Swanson helped to break open the game with a 381-foot shot that left the bat at 103.1 mph for his 16th home run of the season. He also had a 104.3 mph lineout and a 95.4 mph single on the day. The shortstop is now 15-for-50 (.300) in July with two home runs, seven RBI, and nine runs scored. He probably doesn’t want to go on a four-day break.

Swanson delivered a big two-out RBI single off of Mitch Keller in the opening inning that tied the game at two runs apiece. He also singled with two outs in the ninth but was left stranded at third. With his two-hit attack, the 31-year-old shortstop is now hitting .243/.292/.428 with 13 homers, 38 RBI and seven stolen bases on the season.

He took Ryan Borucki deep in a 1-1 game. The strikeouts keep piling up for Swanson, as two more today brought him up to 83 in 71 games. Still, he has 13 homers, 37 RBI and an adequate .239 average. If he stays healthy, he’s probably on his way to another 3.5-4 WAR season.

Credit the hustle — he beat out a grounder to short with Elly De La Cruz playing it rather nonchalantly — but Swanson’s bat has really cooled off after a great first three weeks of May. He’s 3-for-27 in his last seven games, and he’s struck out six times the last two days.

Swanson singled in a run in the first and delivered a solo shot off Tyler Megill in the fourth. It was his eighth homer of the year, putting him on pace to smash his 2024 total of 16 homers in 149 games. His .240 average and 48/13 K/BB ratio are mediocre, but as long as the power numbers hold up, he’s at least a fringy option in mixed leagues.

Swanson got the Cubs on the board with a solo homer in the fifth; the first of three that the Cubs would hit off Paul Skenes in the inning. He’s up to six homers on the year, and that helps make up for the fact he’s hitting just .213 with a .263 on-base percentage over the first 31 games of 2025. Swanson should provide some decent pop, but fantasy managers can’t expect him to fill out the other standard categories.

Swanson has really struggled out of the gate this season, so it was nice to see him finally hit the ball well. This was his first three-hit game on the campaign and it raised his batting average by nearly 20 points to finally climb back above the Mendoza Line. He still has plenty of work to do though as one of the more disappointing players in the league to this point.

Since hitting his fourth homer of the year on Apr. 8, Swanson is 2-for-30 with a 13/0 K/BB, dropping his OPS from .809 to .571. He’s been batting fifth for the Cubs, but they might want to drop him a little lower until this works itself out.
