Swanson wound up 2-for-17 with no RBI and nine strikeouts in the NLDS and 4-for-26 with one RBI and 15 strikeouts between his two postseason series this year. That’s a tough way to end another fine season in which he went 20/20 for the first time and finished with a 105 OPS+ that’s several points better than his career mark of 96.

It’s Swanson’s first 20-steal season and, thus, his first 20/20 season. Swanson had just 40 steals in his first six seasons in the bigs, but he’s up to 66 in his last four years.

Swanson got the party started early with a three-run homer off an ineffective Jake Irvin in the first inning. That gives him 22 homers on the campaign, while the stolen base is his 12th. It’s the first homer in September for the 31-year-old after hitting five in August. You can do better, you can definitely do worse.

Swanson’s homers came off objectively two of the worst pitchers in baseball in Germán Márquez and Antonio Senzatela, but count just the same. The 31-year-old has now homered 21 times and driven in 65 runs while forging a slash of .251/.300/.428. Add in 10 stolen bases, and Swanson has put together a solid — if unspectacular — fantasy campaign in 2025.

Swanson was actually just 2-for-9 in the series, but he made those hits count. He’s 6-for-39 with a 16/1 K/BB over his last 11 games, dropping his average to .245 and his OBP to an uncharacteristic .294. Because he’s not walking much, his OBP is down 27 points from his career mark, even though his average is down just seven points.

Swanson helped to break open the game with a 381-foot shot that left the bat at 103.1 mph for his 16th home run of the season. He also had a 104.3 mph lineout and a 95.4 mph single on the day. The shortstop is now 15-for-50 (.300) in July with two home runs, seven RBI, and nine runs scored. He probably doesn’t want to go on a four-day break.

Swanson delivered a big two-out RBI single off of Mitch Keller in the opening inning that tied the game at two runs apiece. He also singled with two outs in the ninth but was left stranded at third. With his two-hit attack, the 31-year-old shortstop is now hitting .243/.292/.428 with 13 homers, 38 RBI and seven stolen bases on the season.

He took Ryan Borucki deep in a 1-1 game. The strikeouts keep piling up for Swanson, as two more today brought him up to 83 in 71 games. Still, he has 13 homers, 37 RBI and an adequate .239 average. If he stays healthy, he’s probably on his way to another 3.5-4 WAR season.

Credit the hustle — he beat out a grounder to short with Elly De La Cruz playing it rather nonchalantly — but Swanson’s bat has really cooled off after a great first three weeks of May. He’s 3-for-27 in his last seven games, and he’s struck out six times the last two days.

Swanson singled in a run in the first and delivered a solo shot off Tyler Megill in the fourth. It was his eighth homer of the year, putting him on pace to smash his 2024 total of 16 homers in 149 games. His .240 average and 48/13 K/BB ratio are mediocre, but as long as the power numbers hold up, he’s at least a fringy option in mixed leagues.

Swanson got the Cubs on the board with a solo homer in the fifth; the first of three that the Cubs would hit off Paul Skenes in the inning. He’s up to six homers on the year, and that helps make up for the fact he’s hitting just .213 with a .263 on-base percentage over the first 31 games of 2025. Swanson should provide some decent pop, but fantasy managers can’t expect him to fill out the other standard categories.

Swanson has really struggled out of the gate this season, so it was nice to see him finally hit the ball well. This was his first three-hit game on the campaign and it raised his batting average by nearly 20 points to finally climb back above the Mendoza Line. He still has plenty of work to do though as one of the more disappointing players in the league to this point.

Since hitting his fourth homer of the year on Apr. 8, Swanson is 2-for-30 with a 13/0 K/BB, dropping his OPS from .809 to .571. He’s been batting fifth for the Cubs, but they might want to drop him a little lower until this works itself out.
