On a day in which the Red Sox sat many of their key regulars after clinching a spot in the postseason on Friday, Sogard got them on the board first with an RBI single off of Keider Montero in the second inning. That would be their lone tally in the game though. The 28-year-old infielder is now slashing .261/.320/.337 with zero homers and nine RBI in 100 plate appearances on the season.

Sogard entered the game as a pinch-hitter for Connor Wong with two men on and two outs in a tied game in the top half of the ninth inning. He then took a 1-1 splitter from Taylor Rashi and smacked it into center field for a two-run double. For the season, the 27-year-old infielder is hitting .254/.324/.343 with zero homers, six RBI and one stolen base across 74 plate appearances with the Red Sox.

Sogard is up to provide some depth with the ability to play a few positions while with Boston. He takes the place of Jhostynxon Garcia, who was demoted to Triple-A in a corresponding move.

Sogard started all three games while Marcelo Mayer was on the bereavement list, but he’s still the choice to come off the roster with Mayer back. He went 3-for-10 with two doubles in his latest stint, and he’s at .265/.325/.331 overall in 151 plate appearances since debuting last year.

The 27-year-old infielder will return to add depth to the Red Sox’ infield for at least a couple of days while Marcelo Mayer is away on bereavement leave. Sogard will start at third base and bat ninth for the Red Sox for Friday nights’ series opener against the Blue Jays.

Sogard is many things, but he is certainly not Roman Anthony. The 27-year-old infielder gets the call to fortify Boston’s infield depth with first baseman Romy Gonzalez landing on the injured list ahead of Saturday’s game against the Royals. He can be safely ignored in all fantasy formats.
