Smith has been shelved since August 28 due to a left quad strain. Once it became clear that he wouldn’t make it back before the end of the regular season, the Diamondbacks opted to put his spot on the 40-man roster to better use. They used it on Friday to claim Elvin Rodriguez off of waivers from the Orioles.

Smith sustained the injury during Wednesday’s contest against the Brewers. There’s still no clear timetable for how long the Diamondbacks expect him to be shelved for. Jordan Lawlar was recalled from Triple-A Reno to take his place on the team’s active roster.

The move won’t occur Thursday, but likely before Friday’s game against Los Angeles. The 29-year-old suffered a left quad injury during Wednesday’s game, and he’ll need to miss at least a week and a half before potentially returning in the middle of September.

The first baseman left Wednesday’s game with quad tightness, and while the Diamondbacks have not said how long he will be out for, he will be on the bench on Thursday. Tyler Locklear will start at first base and bat seventh against the Brewers.

Smith was 2-for-3 before being lifted for a pinch-runner following a seventh-inning single. The 29-year-old will undergo further evaluation and testing to determine the severity of the issue.

Smith returns to Arizona’s lineup for Monday’s series opener against the Guardians following a six-week absence recovering from a right oblique strain. The 29-year-old holds a respectable .817 OPS with eight homers and two steals in 264 plate appearances over 79 games.

Smith has been on the shelf since early July with a right oblique strain, and this is our first report of him swinging. The next step after live batting practice is usually a rehab assignment, so Smith could be looking at a mid-August return to Arizona. That would likely mean that one of Adrian Del Castillo or Tyler Locklear would lose playing time against right-handed pitching with Smith inserted as either the DH or 1B.

No word yet on the severity of the strain, which will determine how much time Smith winds up missing. The 29-year-old will be out through next week’s All-Star break, finishing the first half hitting .261/.371/.446 with eight homers, 28 RBI and two steals in 264 plate appearances over 79 games.

He also walked. It’s actually Smith’s first multihit game in June, though at least four of his six hits over the last two weeks have been homers. He’s still batting .268/.389/.474 overall after a very fast start.

The sac fly might have been a hit — it was unclear whether Jonathan Clase caught the sinking liner to center without it hitting the grass — but the D-backs declined to challenge it with a 9-1 lead. With Corbin Carroll out, Smith hit higher than sixth in the lineup for just the second time since mid-May; the only other time it happened was also with Carroll absent. Smith has an excellent .274/.394/.458 line for the season, but most of that production came in the first four weeks of the season.

Smith was just 1-for-19 in the month of May coming into Saturday’s game, but broke out of that funk in a nice way. His double in the ninth extended the D-Backs’ lead to 3-0, and gave him 10 RBI over 37 games played. Even with his scuffles in May, he’s still hitting .302/.442/.531 over 96 at-bats.

It’s unclear if the hot-hitting Smith is going to sit against all left-handers, but him getting a breather with Sale on the mound makes complete sense. Randal Grichuk will function as the team’s designated hitter on Friday night and will bat third for the D’Backs.

Smith stayed hot Tuesday against the Rays, doubling in the first inning before taking Zack Littell deep for a two-run blast in the third. He later drew a walk in the eighth and scored on a sacrifice fly. The 29-year-old is slashing an excellent 397/.500/.759 with four homers, 13 runs scored, and nine RBI across 70 plate appearances as he remains in a strict strong-side platoon.

Smith also drew two walks, and is off to about as hot of a start as you can realistically have. The four-reach game now has him hitting .404/.491/.745 over 51 at-bats. It goes without saying that regression is coming, but it’s going to be said anyway: Regression is coming. Still, Smith was impressive at the end of 2025, and it’s fun to see the former first-round pick carry that over to the start of the year.

Smith has become a full-blown fixture in the heart of this Diamondbacks order. He’s hit third against every right-handed pitcher they’ve faced since April 1st and has a 1.024 OPS since then. Of course, he’s also struck out 14 times in 42 plate appearances, letting us know these good times won’t last forever. Still, it’s worth riding Smith during this hot streak as a key contributor in Arizona’s strong lineup.
