Story had four hard-hit balls and even a walk in his five plate appearances today, so his early slump seems over. That still doesn’t mean the Red Sox should put him back into the two hole, though. Maybe having him bat cleanup instead of sixth, as he did with Willson Contreras out today, and moving Contreras up to second would be a fair compromise. Story is up to 17 RBI on the season. No one else on the Red Sox has more than 11.

Story hadn’t had even a two-hit game this season before breaking out today. It was also just the second time in 15 games that he’s gone without a strikeout. He’s hitting .192/.188/.273. And, yes, his OBP is lower than his average; he has one walk and two sac flies in 69 plate appearances.

Story drove in a run with a fielder’s choice in the fourth inning, tying the score at 1-1. He then advanced to third on a single by Marcelo Mayer and swiped home as part of a double steal to give the Red Sox the lead. That would be the extent of their offense though. Story is off to a miserable start at the plate this season, hitting .140/.136/.228 with one homer, nine RBI, two runs scored and one stolen base.

The Red Sox are trying to show Story respect by batting him second, but it’s just not his role at all. Even in a really good 2025 season, he had just a .308 OBP with his 176/33 K/BB in 654 plate appearances. Right now, he has a 14/0 K/B in 33 plate appearances, so his .121 OBP matches his average. Caleb Durbin is struggling, too, but he’d make a lot more sense as a No. 2 hitter, with Story dropping to the sixth spot.

In four years with the Red Sox, Story has never hit a triple in the regular season. He has three this spring, though, and he’s batting .424/.441/.727 in 34 plate appearances.

Story is coming off his best season in quite some time and certainly looks like he’s ready to keep it going. The 33-year-old is slashing .391/.417/.609 this spring and just swiped his first base of the Grapefruit League season. He should be going as a top 100 pick given his power and speed upside.

Statcast says the first double, a 396-foot blast to left-center, would have been a homer in 14 major league ballparks and the second would have left the yard in 10. Story is 4-for-9 so far this spring. He’s likely to begin the year as Boston’s No. 2 hitter, adding to his fantasy value.

That doesn’t seem like a great plan. Story made a nice comeback last season, but it resulted in only a .308 OBP. He’s at .302 in the four years since he signed with the Red Sox. Still, one assumes he’ll hit second initially now, with Roman Anthony and Jarren Duran flanking him ahead of Willson Contreras in the cleanup spot. It’d make more sense to bat him sixth, assuming that the Red Sox think Caleb Durbin will perform like he did last year (and they presumably wouldn’t have traded for him if they didn’t).

Story could have opted out of the $55 million over two years he had left on his six-year deal with Boston, though if he did that, the Red Sox could have retained him on a three-year, $75 million deal. Considering that the free agent shortstop pool is lacking and he wouldn’t have been eligible for a qualifying offer, Story might have gotten something like that $75 million for three years had he opted out. Still, he seems to like his current situation. The Red Sox are probably content, too, though they should be considering if they’d be better off with Story at second and Marcelo Mayer at short than with the status quo.

Story did everything possible to keep Boston in this one with a two-run single in the third inning before taking Yankees starter Carlos Rodón deep for a game-tying homer a couple frames later. He came up with the bases loaded in the seventh against Yankees reliever Fernando Cruz and wound up flying out to center field in what turned out to be one of the more pivotal at-bats of the low-scoring contest. The two teams will square off in a decisive series finale on Thursday night at Yankee Stadium.

It’s a classic post-playoff clinching lineup from the Red Sox in this one with off days for a quartet of veterans. Story, Bregman and Duran could certainly use a break as they’ve played nearly every day down the home stretch. Boston appears poised to let the chips fall where they may this weekend as they’re pretty much locked into the second AL Wild Card spot.

Story finally got the Red Sox on the board with an RBI single off of Braydon Fisher in the seventh inning that plated Jaren Duran who had doubled. That would be Story’s only hit in the ballgame as well. The 32-year-old shortstop has been outstanding for the Red Sox this season, slashing .267/.312/.439 with 25 homers, 96 RBI and 31 stolen bases (32 attempts) in 645 plate appearances.

Unfortunately, Story gave the two runs he scored on offense back to the A’s while committing two errors in the game. Still, that’s not at all typical of the veteran. Story has been an excellent player for 3 1/2 months now, and he’s been especially good in hitting .373/.413/.610 so far in September.

It’s a critical victory for the Red Sox as they remain in a virtual tie with the Mariners and Astros for the second AL Wild Card spot with just over one week left in the regular season. Story was caught stealing for the first time this season after 31 consecutive successful thefts when he was thrown out attempting to swipe second base to end the eighth inning. The 32-year-old shortstop has been an unexpected revelation this season for fantasy managers with a 24-homer, 31-steal season. It’s his first 20-20 season since back in 2021 when he accomplished the feat in his final year with Colorado.

He’s stolen 30 bases for the first time in his career, and he’s done so without being caught. The only known player in major league history to have that many steals without ever getting caught was Trea Turner, who was 30-for-30 two years ago. Story has 11 games left to top that mark.

Story got the Red Sox on the board in the fourth inning with an RBI single off of Ryne Nelson. He was then hit by a pitch to open the seventh inning, swiped second base and scored on an RBI knock off the bat of David Hamilton. The 32year-old shortstop had a healthy and productive season for the Red Sox, slashing .262/.308/.436 with 23 homers, 89 RBI and 27 stolen bases.

Story had an RBI single and a walk before coming to bat in the sixth inning. In that at-bat, he hit a pop-up down the right field line that was hooking around the foul pole when Jhonkensy Noel tried to rob the home run, but wound up having the ball pop out of his glove and hit the foul pole for a home run. It was Story’s 23rd on the season to go along with 86 RBI. He’s finally healthy and playing well enough that there’s a legitimate chance he opts out of his contract at the end of the season to become a free agent.

He also turned in a couple of excellent defensive plays that prevented the Orioles from scoring after the fifth inning. Story has three homers in six games and 22 on the season. That ranks him fourth among shortstops, three behind Francisco Lindor and one behind Willy Adames and Zach Neto. He’s third at the position with 84 RBI, trailing Geraldo Perdomo by three and Bo Bichette by two.

Story kicked off the scoring with a second-inning solo shot against Orioles starter Kyle Bradish. He also singled and stole a base in the ninth inning, just for good measure. The 32-year-old shortstop joined the 20-20 club earlier this week and has shown zero signs of slowing down heading into the home stretch.

Story became the first Red Sox shortstop since Nomar Garciaparra back in 1997 to record a 20-homer and 20-steal campaign when he took Yankees starter Will Warren deep for a fifth-inning homer. It’s his first 20-20 season since 2021 when he accomplished the feat in his final year with Colorado. He also added a two-run single as a part of an impressive three-hit performance. The 32-year-old managed to shake off an ice-cold start to the season to become one of the hottest hitters in baseball since the start of June.

Story singled and stole second in first inning before scoring on a base hit by Masataka Yoshida. He then took Cal Quantrill deep for a three-run blast in the third for his 19th home run of the season. The 32-year-old shortstop is enjoying his best season in Boston, hitting .260/.304/.426 with the 19 homers, 70 runs scored, 79 RBI, and 22 steals across 494 plate appearances.

Story accounted for two of the Red Sox’s three total hits in this game and the last of which sent them to victory. He slapped a ground ball between the first and second basemen with the bases loaded in the ninth inning to end this game and also stole his 21st base a few innings before. Amazingly, Story has not been caught stealing yet this season and those 21 bags are the most by any player who has not been caught. Those along with his 18 home runs and a .258 batting average have sneakily made him a very valuable shortstop.

Story did all his damage in the late stages of the contest, putting Boston ahead with a two-run single in the sixth inning before plating a key insurance run in the ensuing frame. The 32-year-old shortstop has recorded 12 hits, including three home runs, over his last seven games and is batting .327 (37-for-113) with seven homers, 29 RBI and six steals over his last 30 games.

Story went 5-for-10 with a walk, a HBP, a home run, four RBI, and three runs scored in a sweep over the Astros this weekend. Many people will remember that Story hit .158 with 35 strikeouts in 25 games in May; however, he has been tremendous in all other months of the season. He hit .260 with five home runs and six steals in the first month of the season and has hit .296/.338/.546 in 52 games since June 1st with 11 home runs and nine steals. He’s been a great fantasy add for those who were able to scoop him on waivers after that tough May.

Story also made an enemy of Hector Neris today by trying to tell the batter when Neris was going to his splitter while he was on second after the double in the seventh. Neris eventually intentionally balked him to third, but he decided to make a thing of it after concluding the inning, leading to a benches-clearing situation in which both teams mostly just stood around. Story’s homer was his 18th of the year. He’s up to 68 RBI, which is tied for 18th in the majors.

That’s 31 RBI in 28 games for Story. He’s tied for 19th in the majors with 57 overall, which isn’t something anyone would have seen coming a month ago. His homer tonight came off Jake Bird, who had allowed just two in 48 1/3 innings and was almost certainly second in line, behind Hunter Goodman, to serve as the Rockies’ All-Star.

Story is now up to 14 home runs and 53 RBI on the season. After there were some calls to designate him for assignment earlier in the season to make room for Marcelo Mayer, Story has been red hot in Boston. Over his last 35 games, he’s hitting .301/.336/.519 with eight home runs, 23 runs scored, 32 RBI, and five steals. That’s valuable in all league types.

Story hadn’t had a four-hit game since Aug. 13, 2023. He’s 13-for-24 with two homers and 10 RBI in his last six games, raising his OPS to .697. He was at .591 on this day a month ago, and he hasn’t been over .700 since May 3. He’s also now 14-for-14 stealing bases. Byron Buxton, at 15-for-15, is the only other player with as many steals and zero failures.

Story took Ryan Zeferjahn deep to tie the game at 5-5 in the sixth inning. That’s Story’s fourth homer in June, and 11th overall in 2025. Even with the home run and a single, he’s still slashing a less-than-desirable .235/.277/.371 in 2025 over 294 at-bats.

That Story was hitting cleanup says a lot about the state of Boston’s lineup, but at least he had a nice game. He also hit a big homer in Wednesday’s win over the Mariners, though that was his only hit in his previous four games. He’s batting .234/.277/.364 with 92 strikeouts, the fifth-highest total in the majors.
