Things did not start great for Chandler when Orlando Arcia smacked a double off the top of the wall on the second pitch of his career. He settled in beautifully after that though. First, he stranded Arcia at third and let out a roar when he struck out Mickey Moniak to end that threat, The Rockies would only muster up one more measly base runner for the next three innings, and they were erased by a double play. Chandler has such an impressive blend of stuff and command throwing 29 of his 40 pitches for strikes, touching 100 mph with his fastball, and breaking off some nasty sliders. He can be a huge difference maker if the Pirates let him start this season.

The 22-year-old top prospect will pitch out of the Pirates’ bullpen as a long reliever or in a bulk role behind an opener to begin his big league career. It’s also unclear when he will take the mound for the first time. Chandler posted a 5-6 record, 4.05 ERA, 1.48 WHIP and a 121/53 K/BB ratio across 100 innings in 24 starts at the Triple-A level. While he’s an elite talent, it’s going to be hard for him to carve out mixed league value this season while pitching in a scattered role.

It’s almost absurd that Chandler — universally-regarded as one of the top pitching prospects in baseball — is breaking into the majors as a long reliever after piling up 31 Triple-A starts since last August. The 22-year-old has the kind of stuff that makes fantasy managers lean forward in their metaphorical chairs — electric enough to matter instantly in deeper formats, even if the shallow-league volume doesn’t quite add up. Long-term, the upside is still immense, but his shaky command means the early experience could feel less like a polished debut and more like watching an upstart garage band try to figure out how to play arenas.

Chandler, arguably the game’s top pitching prospect, deserved the promotion months ago, but he’s been pretty mediocre after an outstanding start, probably in part due to frustration about being left in the minors. He has a 7.43 ERA in his last six starts for Triple-A Indianapolis and is 5-6 with a 4.05 ERA and a 121/53 K/BB in 100 innings overall. The Pirates intend to use him as a bulk guy initially, which actually seems good for his fantasy value since it increases the chances that he’ll get wins. It’s possible he’ll be of some use in mixed leagues, and it should help that he’ll get to make his debut at home against the Rockies. Still, he’s not exactly a safe pickup, especially on a bad Pirates team.

It almost defies belief that Chandler, widely regarded as one of the top pitching prospects in baseball, has made 31 Triple-A starts since last August without a promotion. There was some speculation he might be called up for Sunday’s series finale against the Cubs, but that’s clearly not the case. The 22-year-old’s control has regressed in recent months, making it tough to envision him having much fantasy impact even if Pittsburgh gives him a late-season cameo.

Hiles adds that Chandler is expected to make his scheduled start on Saturday night for Triple-A Indianapolis, eliminating any chance that he’s summoned to take the ball for Sunday’s series finale against the Cubs. The club has yet to officially announce Sunday’s starter, but it seemingly won’t be Chandler. The 22-year-old top pitching prospect has been languishing on the doorstep of the majors for at least a few weeks at this point, which is frustrating for fantasy managers that have been stashing him. There’s a decent chance he receives a late-season cup of coffee in Pittsburgh, but that might not happen until late August or early September.

Chandler also struck out seven and walked one while throwing 61 of his 91 pitches for strikes. The 22-year-old now leads the International League with 113 strikeouts on the season. The narrative will be that Chandler’s WHIP has gotten so high that he isn’t ready to be promoted yet, but he had a 2.03 ERA with 69 strikeouts in 48.2 innings at around the same point in the season when the Pirates called up Paul Skenes last year. Chandler also has a 3.14 ERA in 132 innings at Triple-A between last year and this year. He’s very likely ready, and we assume the Pirates will call him up after August 15th, when they can be assured that he won’t lose his rookie eligibility.

He topped out at 100.4 mph in the contest. Chandler got the win and is 3-1 with a 2.92 ERA in his last five starts. Still awaiting his first big-league callup, the 22-year-old is 5-3 with a 3.27 ERA and a 104/41 K/BB in 82 2/3 innings overall.

He struck out seven. Chandler had a miserable June while awaiting a deserved callup that never arrived. It seems like he’s recovered now, and he should get a look at some point during the second half, though the Pirates will probably want to curtail his workload at the end of the year.

Chandler celebrated July 4 with a dominant performance on the mound, allowing just five hits and two walks in his six innings while striking out six. He threw 59 of his 91 pitches for strikes and even retired 12 batters in a row at one point. There’s simply nothing left for him to prove in Triple-A, and it’s long overdue for him to get a shot to face MLB hitters.

Most importantly, Chandler walked one after his struggles with command before. Still, throwing only 42 of 79 pitches for strikes is not ideal. He struck out three and is still too good to be staying at Triple-A. We’re not sure what the Pirates are asking him to work out in Triple-A, but he can likely do that in MLB games as well.

The fastball velocity was there, and there were no reports of an injury, so this was simply a bad start for Chandler. At some point, you have to wonder if the lack of promotion is impacting him mentally. After cruising through the early parts of the season and absolutely earning the right to pitch MLB innings, Chandler has struggled with his command of late. In his last seven starts, he has issued 19 walks and hit three batters in 26 innings. Chandler had just an 8.6 percent walk rate last season and didn’t have control issues at the start of the year, so it’s fair to wonder if the 22-year-old is either frustrated or is trying too hard to impress and force his promotion that he has begun over-throwing.

With just one strikeout of the 12 batters he faced, Chandler didn’t seem to be on his way to a very good outing anyway. He still has a 2.49 ERA and a 70/22 K/BB in 49 2/3 innings overall, and he seems ready for his first look in the major leagues.

It’s unclear how close the Pirates are to promoting Chandler for his first taste of the majors, but it seems like a mistake to keep wasting starts like this in the minors when he’s capable of making an impact at the highest level, even for a non-contending team. The hard-throwing top pitching prospect boasts a microscopic 2.03 ERA and 69/21 K/BB ratio across 48 2/3 innings (11 starts) this season at the Triple-A level. He’s one of the few prospects that fantasy managers in re-draft formats should be stashing.
