Torres sparked a rally with a one-out single in the opening inning and scored on Kerry Carpenter’s two-run double. He then reached on an error in the seventh and rode home on Hao-Yu Lee’s go-ahead blast. Torres nearly got one in the first, hitting a ball 386 feet off Cole Ragans. It was just a flyout, but the 101-mph exit velocity was his best to date this season, as was the 78.2-mph swing speed. In fact, just one of his 107 swings coming into the night had topped 75 mph, and his average swing speed was down about 2.5 mph from last year. Torres has been getting on base just fine for the Tigers, as he’s walked 12 times and scored 10 runs in 16 games. Still, he needs to show some power if he’s going to be helpful in fantasy leagues.

He managed a deep enough sacrifice fly against Garrett Acton to get Jake Rogers in during the seventh inning. Torres is hitting .234/.383/.319 through his first 13 games of the season and is a fringe fantasy starter in 12-team leagues at this point due to the lack of stolen-base upside and ho-hum batting average.

Torres drew a leadoff walk off of Michael King to open the sixth inning and ultimately scored the Tigers’ first run on a two-out RBI single off the bat of Spencer Torkelson. He also worked a walk during the team’s go-ahead rally in the eighth inning, racing around to score on Kevin McGonigle’s two-run single. It certainly sounds like a precautionary move by the Tigers with spring training wrapping up. Fantasy managers should consider him day-to-day for now. It’ll be Spencer Torkelson entering the lineup at DH in his place.

The Brewers’ Brandon Woodruff, the Yankees’ Trent Grisham and Cubs’ Shota Imanaga were the others to accept the QO. Torres would have had to accept quite a bit less in a multiyear deal, especially with the QO hanging over his head, so this was a pretty easy call for him. It’s unclear if this will take the Tigers out of the market for another significant bat. They’re currently set to return every position player from their 2025 club.

The 28-year-old infielder is expected to be fully recovered and ready to go for the start of spring training. What remains to be seen is what uniform he’ll be donning for the 2026 season. Torres had an All-Star campaign in his lone season with the Tigers, slashing .256/.358/.387 with 16 homers, 74 RBI and four swipes in 628 plate appearances. He should have no issues landing a lucrative multi-year deal on the open market this winter.

Torres added that it’s been troubling him for about a month. The surgery shouldn’t have much of an impact on his preparation for 2026. He’ll be seeking a multiyear deal in free agency after taking a one-year contract last winter in order to rebuild his value.

Torres broke a scoreless affair with his solo shot off J.T. Ginn in the sixth inning. In his first year with the Tigers, the 28-year-old has gone deep 14 times while driving in 61 runs in his 117 games. He’s slowed down since the start of July, but it’d certainly be fair to say that that Torres’ inaugural campaign with Detroit has been a successful one.

Dillon Dingler was then walked intentionally to set up the double play ball and Javier Baez went down on strikes. Jahmai Jones followed with a walk to load the bases, setting up a battle between Torres and Kaleb Ort. After working the count full, Torres took a sweeper low and away to bring in the only run of the ballgame and send the Tigers’ home faithful into a frenzy. He finished the night 2-for-4 and is now hitting .262/.360/.400 with 13 homers, 59 RBI and four stolen bases on the year.

Tigers manager A.J. Hinch told reporters hat he’s hopeful Torres will be able to return to Wednesday’s lineup before adding that he’s been dealing with some forearm tightness for the past couple days. The fact that he hasn’t been sent for any additional imaging is an encouraging sign that the club doesn’t think he’s dealing with anything too serious. It sounds like he’ll be back in a couple days, if not sooner.

Torres came off the bench as a pinch-hitter during Sunday’s series finale against the Guardians after leaving Saturday’s showdown early with a neck contusion. It doesn’t seem like a serious concern for the 28-year-old second baseman moving forward. He’ll make his first All-Star Game appearance since the 2019 season next week at Truist Park in Atlanta.

Torres will sit out Sunday afternoon’s showdown out of an abundance of caution following an early exit from Saturday’s game with a neck contusion. It’ll be Colt Keith taking over at the keystone in his absence. There doesn’t seem to be a high level of concern for the 28-year-old All-Star second baseman at the moment, so fantasy managers should anticipate him being ready for Monday’s series opener against the Rays.

Torres had one of the Tigers’ four sac flies today. He’s hitting .281/.380/.424 this season, and he seems like a strong candidate to make the AL All-Star team after a long absence.
