Nothing else is working, so why not? Trammell is in left today, with Zach Cole in center and Jake Meyers on the bench. Trammell, who hasn’t even had an at-bat in 13 days, is batting .200/.299/.345 in 127 plate appearances.

The Yankees had the umpires check Trammell’s bat after a ninth-inning double, and the bat was taken out of play. The issue was the bat, apparently, was that a bunch of paint had worn off it, making it illegally colored but not actually giving Trammell any advantage.

The 27-year-old outfielder landed on the injured list with a cervical muscle strain on August 21 after crashing into the outfield wall at Comerica Park. He returns to a .208/.313/.354 slash line with three homers, 11 RBI and two stolen bases in his first 112 plate appearances with the Astros.

Trammell sustained the injury when he crashed into the center field wall while attempting to make a leaping catch against the Tigers on Wednesday afternoon. No word yet on how long he’ll be sidelined for. Brice Matthews was recalled from Triple-A Sugar Land to take his place on the active roster on Thursday.

Espada added that Trammell is also being evaluated for possible neck and back injuries after a scary-looking collision with the center-field wall attempting to make a leaping catch during Wednesday’s contest against the Tigers. The 27-year-old was carted off the field and seems like a virtual lock to hit the injured list. There should be an official update on his status prior to Thursday’s series opener against the Orioles.

Trammell was unable to continue after he collided with the wall while attempting to track down a triple from Dillon Dingler. The outfielder attempted to walk off on his own, but was unable to do so. He’ll likely need to undergo imaging to determine the severity of the injury.

An unlikely hero, Trammell broke this game open with a two-run shot off Devin Williams in the 10th inning to stretch the Astros’ lead out to three runs. Offense was tough to come by in this one, as the two teams combined for just four runs and 12 hits before the chaos of extra innings and Trammell’s decisive blow. Despite the rash of deadline acquisitions in Houston, Trammell has hung on to a nearly everyday role since the beginning of July and has a .795 OPS with three homers and two stolen bases over his last 30 games. There are worse options in deep leagues.

Hitting out of the leadoff spot in the Astros’ lineup, Trammell started the home half of the first inning with a single and deftly nabbed second base before being left stranded there. He singled again in the third inning but was cut down attempting to stretch it into a double, and added a two-out single in the eighth inning. With his three-hit night, the 27-year-old outfielder is now slashing .260/.367/.440 with two homers, eight RBI and two stolen bases over his first 60 plate appearances with the Astros. We have seen Trammell with stretches of mixed league viability in the past, so there’s no harm in trying to ride the hot hand here.

The 27-year-old outfielder led off the fifth inning with a walk off of Bryan Woo and came around to score the Astros’ first run on an error by M’s shortstop J.P. Crawford. Trammell then crushed a 384-foot solo shot off of Woo in the sixth inning that increased the Astros’ edge to 5-3, and helped to push the game out of reach with a two-out, two-run double in the seventh inning. So far in his limited action with the Astros, Trammell has slashed .205/.304/.436 with a pair of homers and eight RBI in 46 plate appearances.

It’s Trammell’s only hit in 15 at-bats since joining the Astros. He now had 16 career major league homers in 377 plate appearances since debuting with the Mariners in 2021. Unfortunately, those have come with a .163 average and a 36.8 percent strikeout rate.

Trammell will be making his season debut after hurting his calf during spring training. He was once a top prospect and has gotten chances with some of the best teams in the league, like the Yankees, Dodgers, and Mariners. He’ll try to make the most of this opportunity with the Astros but will most likely start off as a left-handed hitter off the bench.
