Ildemaro Vargas is slugging .460 on the season and we’re just as confused as you are. The homer is his third in 63 games with the Diamondbacks. The 34-year-old has carved out a career as organizational depth, and it sounds like a pretty nice life.

Vargas fractured his feet on Tuesday night when he was hit by a pitch. We don’t yet have a timeline for his recovery, but given that it’s already almost July, it might be hard for Vargas to heal and return to the Diamondbacks roster before the end of the season. Blaze Alexander will take over his role as a reserve infielder.

The hits keep on coming for the Diamondbacks. It seems like a virtual lock that Vargas will require a trip to the injured list after suffering a fractured fifth metatarsal in his right foot when he was hit by a pitch during Tuesday’s game in Chicago. There should be a definitive update ahead of Wednesday’s series finale. It’ll most likely be Blaze Alexander coming up to replace his spot on Arizona’s roster since Jordan Lawlar is dealing with a lingering hamstring issue at Triple-A Reno.

What is going on in Arizona? Seriously. Vargas becomes the latest position player to be hit by a pitch in the last few days joining both Corbin Carroll (wrist) and Eugenio Suárez (hand) over the last few days. There should be an update on his status shortly.

The 33-year-old infielder smacked an RBI single into left field off of Austin Gomber in the third inning that extended the Diamondbacks’ lead to 3-1. He then got into the fun as he crushed a 449-foot (106.7 mph EV) two-run shot off of Gomber in the fifth inning that gave the D’Backs a 9-7 lead they would never relinquish. With his three-hit night, Vargas is now hitting .250 (4-for-16) with a homer and four RBI in his limited action with the Diamondbacks this season.
