Tigers manager A.J. Hinch stopped short of calling it a setback, but Vierling appears unlikely to make it back before the regular season wraps up and his postseason status is in jeopardy now. There should be some clarity on his status at some point in the next few days.

The versatile 28-year-old has spent the majority of the season on the injured list with a wide array of injuries. This time, he has been shelved since August 10 due to a left oblique strain. It’s unclear how many at-bats he’ll need there before he’s cleared to rejoin the Tigers. He should be expected back at some point next week barring any setbacks.

Vierling hits the injured list prior to Sunday’s series finale against the Angels just a couple days after slugging a game-winning walk-off homer during Friday’s series opener. No word yet on the severity of the strain, which will determine how much time he misses. There isn’t a ton of time left for him to make it back if it’s anything beyond a mild strain.

Vierling’s home run was his first of the season. The 28-year-old outfielder hit a go-ahead three-run home run off Reid Detmers in the eighth inning. Vierling has dealt with injuries all season, but finally seems to be coming around with the bat. He should continue to see regular playing time in the outfield until Parker Meadows returns, making him an option in AL-Only leagues.

The versatile 28-year-old will return to the Tigers’ starting lineup on Saturday where he’ll start in center field and bat seventh against Twins’ right-hander Bailey Ober. Trey Sweeney was optioned to Triple-A Toledo in a corresponding move on Saturday.

He’ll stay there at least through the weekend before being re-evaluated. The 28-year-old has been sidelined since late May due to renewed inflammation in his shoulder. The fact that he’s already back in live game action is very encouraging though and it’s possible that he could rejoin the big league club at some point next week if everything goes well.

The notable development per Detroit’s latest injury report is that Vierling has also resumed throwing after hitting the injured list back in late May with shoulder inflammation. The 28-year-old outfielder should be ready for a rehab assignment at some point in the coming days.

Vierling has gone 1-for-5 with a pair of RBI in two games since returning from the injured list on Friday. The 28-year-old lefty-masher has been bumped up to the leadoff spot to face Guardians southpaw Logan Allen with Kerry Carpenter getting the day off. He offers some appeal for fantasy managers in daily formats when he gets his opportunities against left-handed starters.

The versatile 28-year-old met up with the Mudhens on Friday in Worcester and will work out with the club for a couple of days before serving as the designated hitter in Sunday’s game. He’s going to need plenty of at-bats on his rehab assignment, but as long as everything goes according to plan he should be back with the Tigers before the month of May is through.
