Painter is the major headliner here for fantasy purposes as he should enter spring training with a legitimate chance to make Philadelphia’s rotation. The 22-year-old is no longer the consensus top pitching prospect in baseball after a disappointing campaign last year at the Triple-A level, but he still has the raw stuff required to evolve into a top-of-the-rotation arm. There’s clearly some prospect fatigue going on with Painter which makes him an interesting buy-low candidate in dynasty formats.

He allowed nine hits, one of them an Isan Díaz homer, while striking out seven and walking three. The outing leaves Painter with a 7.77 ERA and a 27/16 K/BB in 24 1/3 innings over five starts in August. It just doesn’t seem like he’s going to help this year.

Painter authored one of his strongest performances of the season on Friday night, managing to avoid serious damage despite dealing with eight baserunners over five frames. He finished with five strikeouts and threw 57 of 90 pitches for strikes. There’s a path for the 22-year-old top pitching prospect to make his big-league debut once rosters expand in early September, but it’ll likely be in a long relief role given the crowded state of Philadelphia’s rotation, which is currently without Zack Wheeler as he recovers from surgery to remove a blood clot from his shoulder.

There was optimism at the outset of the season that Painter would arrive in the big leagues at some point in second half. That doesn’t appear likely at this juncture — even with Zack Wheeler landing on the injured list with a blood clot in his shoulder — given his ongoing struggles on the doorstep of the majors. The 22-year-old remains one of the premier pitching prospects in the game, but his odds of reaching Philadelphia — and making an impact for fantasy purposes — are more likely in 2026 than at some point in the final six weeks.

Painter also walked four and struck out four, and now has a 4.88 ERA in 72 Triple-A innings. Zack Wheeler is battling some shoulder soreness, but even if he were to need an IL stint, the Phillies may turn to Seth Johnson or Alan Rangel in a spot start situation.

The Phillies were able to acquire Jhoan Duran without giving up Painter, and then Painter celebrated with one of his best starts at Triple-A. The 22-year-old struck out four and walked two while throwing 65 of his 103 pitches for strikes. He’s now sporting a 4.50 ERA at Triple-A, so the Phillies have no need to rush him up for big league innings.

Dombrowski’s remarks came after shipping prospects Mick Abel and Eduardo Tate to the Twins for closer Jhoan Duran. The results haven’t been spectacular for Painter this season at Triple-A Lehigh Valley, but he remains a big part of their long-term pitching plans. The 22-year-old top prospect has a chance to ascend to the big leagues at some point in the final two months.

Ryan Mountcastle’s two-run homer did the damage. Painter walked three and settled for four strikeouts, but he allowed only three hard-hit balls. He’s still trying to find some consistency from start to start, and it doesn’t look like he’ll be as much of a factor down the stretch as the Phillies and fantasy leaguers hoped for at the beginning of the season. Overall, he has a 4.68 ERA and a 75/24 K/BB in 73 innings.

The Phillies have made it clear that Painter is “untouchable” in trade talks, but that doesn’t mean he’s going to join the Phillies’ rotation in the second half. “We’ve always said July-ish that he’d be ready to join the rotation, not that he was going to join the rotation,” Dombrowski said. “He isn’t guaranteed a spot in a rotation at any point. He’s never been told that he is. We’ll just play it by ear, see how he’s throwing, how our club fits together.” Right now, Painter has a 5.01 ERA, 1.44 WHIP, and 8.2 percent walk rate in 12 starts at Triple-A, so he doesn’t appear to be an immediate threat to get starts for the Phillies without an injury.

He struck out four and walked nobody while throwing 51 of his 76 pitches for strikes. He did allow two home runs, and the long ball has been an issue for him since arriving in Triple-A, but Painter will almost certainly make his MLB debut at some point in the second half.

Painter struck out three and walked one, and allowed all of his runs on three home runs. The 22-year-old now has a 4.97 ERA in 11 starts at Triple-A with a 55/20 K/BB ratio in 50 2/3 innings. The Phillies likely care more about his pitch movement and locations than his statline, so the inconsistent performance doesn’t necessarily mean that he won’t get an opportunity in Philadelphia after the break, but it’s something we should keep in mind when thinking about what kind of fantasy value he’ll have in 2025.

Painter made the National League’s roster for the annual prospect showcase, but will not pitch in the actual game itself. The 22-year-old is completely healthy, but will remain shut down during the All-Star break, in an effort to have him available at some point for Philadelphia’s second-half playoff push. He’s showcased top-of-the-rotation stuff this season at the Triple-A level, but the surface stats haven’t exactly backed it up, with a pedestrian 4.24 ERA and 45/18 K/BB ratio across 40 1/3 innings over nine starts. He projects as an immediate impact contributor for fantasy purposes once he arrives in the big leagues.

Painter struck out five and also handed out four free passes. The most encouraging development here is that the 22-year-old top prospect was hitting 99 mph in this outing and the stuff remains borderline elite. The results haven’t quite matched the hype in recent weeks, but that shouldn’t dampen enthusiasm for his impending arrival. There’s a path to starts with the Phillies at some point in the second half, but the front office is probably just fine with letting him continue to iron things out on the doorstep of the majors for now.

This was against a Triple-A Red Sox lineup that is now without Marcelo Mayer and Roman Anthony. There’s a lot of enthusiasm for Painter, and he remains a top-tier pitching prospect, but he hasn’t pitched since 2022 and has a 5.19 ERA in 26 innings at Triple-A this season. He’s likely the 6th starter in Philadelphia for the next month or so with Aaron Nola (ribs) suffering a setback; however, Painter will need to pitch a little better and also show that he can pitch on four days’ rest before he gets a call-up.

No word on how long Walters will be sidelined, but it’s going to be a challenge for him to make it back this season. The 24-year-old rookie was transferred to the 60-day injured list last week after hitting the shelf back in late May with a lat strain.

Nothing has changed in the prognosis for the 24-year-old hurler, who is still working his way back from a right lat strain, this was merely done as a procedural move to free up a spot on the team’s 40-man roster for the addition of Dom Nuñez on Friday.

He also walked four and allowed two home runs while striking out five on the day. He still has a solid 3.86 ERA on the season, but this is just a reminder that he’s returning from Tommy John surgery, and so there will likely be some inconsistencies this season.

Walters is likely facing an extended absence given the nature of the injury. The 24-year-old righty made two relief appearances for Cleveland after being called up earlier this week from Triple-A Columbus.
