Waddell’s latest stint with the Mets lasted roughly 48 hours during which he tossed 4 1/3 scoreless frames in relief against the division-rival Marlins on Sunday afternoon. The 31-year-old should be back at some point later this month as New York continues to re-shuffle its relief corps.

Waddell provides New York’s overworked bullpen with some additional long relief depth heading into Sunday’s matchup against the Marlins. The well-traveled 31-year-old southpaw holds a serviceable 4.00 ERA across 27 innings (10 appearances, one start) this season in his first big-league action since the 2021 season.

The Mets tried to option Waddell to Triple-A Syracuse after the All-Star break, but the optione was rescinded and he was instead placed on the injured list with a right hip impingement. Now that he’s fully recovered, he has been activated and subsequently optioned. He’ll continue to function as excess bullpen depth for the Mets at the Triple-A level.

Waddell was sent down on Saturday, but since he was hurting when it happened, he’ll resume collecting a major league salary and service time until he’s healthy. The 31-year-old Waddell has a 4.00 ERA over 27 innings for the Mets this season.

Waddell heads back to the minors after throwing 76 pitches over 3 2/3 innings in relief during Friday’s second-half opener against the Reds. The 31-year-old lefty has posted a solid 4.00 ERA across 27 innings over a career-high 10 appearances this season for the Mets.

The 31-year-old southpaw allowed four hits on the afternoon while walking one and striking out a pair. All of the damage done against him came in the second inning as Alex Jackson smacked an RBI double and rode home on Jordan Westburg’s two-run blast. Waddell got 10 swings and misses on 57 pitches on the day, registering a CSW of 30 percent. Since he’s unlikely to be available the rest of the weekend, it wouldn’t be surprised to see him swapped out for a fresh arm on Friday.

MLB.com’s Adam McCalvy adds that Woodruff, who recorded six strikeouts and threw 74 pitches (52 strikes) on Wednesday afternoon, is expected to make another rehab start next Tuesday for Triple-A Nashville before the Brewers consider bringing him back for his first start since September 23, 2023. The Brewers have also said that Woodruff may make one more rehab start after that. The veteran is ostensibly on the IL with an ankle injury, but he’s also still rehabbing from off-season shoulder surgery so he remains a big risk in fantasy leagues. When he does return in early June, one of Quinn Priester or Chad Patrick will likely be sent down.

Woodruff will restart his rehab assignment on Wednesday with one of Milwaukee’s affiliates after being shut down earlier this month with right ankle tendinitis. No word yet on how long it’ll take for the 32-year-old veteran to make it back to the majors for his season debut, but he’s expected to make at least two rehab starts, which pushes his return back into early June. It’s extremely challenging to forecast given the number of variable impacting the decision at the moment.

It was expected to be an abbreviated outing for Woodruff, who threw just 39 pitches (28 strikes) in his final minor league tune-up as he prepares to make his long-awaited season debut later this week. The 32-year-old figures to take the ball next weekend against the Twins in his season debut after Tobias Myers was optioned back to Triple-A earlier on Sunday morning. He’s worthy of a speculative roster spot in all fantasy formats given his extensive track record of success, but there’s going to be a bit of a governor on his workload as he returns after missing all of last year recovering from shoulder surgery.

Woodruff threw 60 of 83 pitches for strikes in his likely final rehab outing. He finished with five strikeouts and only issued one walk. The 32-year-old former fantasy ace figures to return to Milwaukee’s rotation to make his long-awaited season debut either this weekend or later next week depending on whether he needs another tune-up. He should be rostered in deeper mixed leagues based on his extensive track record and how he’s looked in recent rehab starts.

The widely-held expectation is that it’ll be Woodruff’s final rehab tune-up prior to making his long-awaited season debut. The 32-year-old former fantasy ace might not revert to his previously-elite form, but he figures to make an impact for fantasy managers, especially in deeper mixed leagues.

In his first MLB appearance in four years, Waddell pitched 4 1/3 scoreless innings for the Mets on Wednesday. He’s back in Triple-A now, but that showing will help his standing next time a spot starter/long man is needed.

The Mets called on Waddell for the spot-appearance as they’re in the midst of a 26 games in 27 days stretch and he performed as well as anyone could have hoped. He followed opener Huascar Brazobán the funky, left-handed Waddell was lethal over his 60-pitch outing. He retired the final eight batters he faced and forced a swing-and-miss with all five of his pitches. Those five pitches all got some real use too, as he threw each at least 12% of the time and he looked passable as a spot-starter.

The Brewers haven’t publicly released an exact date for Woodruff’s return to the big leagues, but it sounds like there’s a chance it’s coming shortly after his next rehab start in the upper minors. The 32-year-old former fantasy ace fired 5 2/3 scoreless frames on Wednesday in his latest tune-up for High-A Wisconsin.

Waddell is up to make a spot appearance Wednesday against the Diamondbacks with Huascar Brazoban serving as the opener. The 30-year-old left-hander will likely head back to Syracuse after, and he isn’t a recommended option for the start against Arizona for those looking for a streamer.

Woodruff, 32, gave up just three hits with one walk and three strikeouts. The right-hander continues to make steady progress in his journey to make his first MLB start in two years, but it’s worth pointing out that he dealt with fatigue after his previous outing with Triple-A Nashville. How he bounces back from this outing will help determine the next step.

Murphy elaborated that there were no setbacks from a physical standpoint and added that it’ll be a big test for Woodruff to see how he recovers from the 61-pitch outing where he tossed five scoreless innings. The 32-year-old former fantasy ace figures to be ready to make his season debut at some point in early-to-mid May.

Although he was averaging just 92 mph with his fastball, Woodruff, coming back from shoulder surgery, was plenty effective in allowing just two hits and walking none. He figures to get at least one more rehab start before rejoining the Brewers rotation.

Woodruff is aiming for approximately four innings in his next rehab outing and is expected to need a couple additional starts before being ready to make his season debut. The 32-year-old former fantasy ace struck out five and allowed two runs over 3 2/3 innings on Saturday for Triple-A Nashville in his rehab debut.

Woodruff topped out at 95.1 mph and threw 66 pitches (44 strikes) in his first minor league outing since undergoing shoulder surgery prior to last year. It was a positive sign to see the velocity where it needs to be, only a couple ticks (roughly three mph) lower than pre-surgery levels, but he only generated five swinging strikes in this one. The 32-year-old should be ready to make his long-awaited return to Milwaukee’s starting rotation by late April or early May.
