Williams gave up a leadoff double and a one-out RBI single to blow a 2-1 lead. He had been dominant in previous eight outings, striking out 18 and allowing only an unearned run from an automatic runner scoring in extra innings (he got the save in that one anyway). This was hardly a disaster, either. Still, he’s probably not going to get the chance to reclaim his job from David Bednar unless Bednar leaves the door open.

After blowing a save against the Rangers on Monday night, Williams was summoned to pitch the bottom of the eighth inning in a scoreless tie on Tuesday night. After getting the first out, he gave up a double to Adolis Garcia and then walked Joc Pederson and Wyatt Langford to load the bases. Rowdy Tellez then dunked a two-run single into center that would prove to be the only scoring in the ballgame. Williams is still probably secure in his role for now, but with David Bednar, Camilo Doval and Luke Weaver all capable of closing games, the leash is tightening.

Williams gave up a home run to Joc Pederson in the ninth inning to tie the game. The 30-year-old right-hander has now been scored on in five of his last seven appearances. Williams has a 5.10 ERA on the season now and a 6.00 ERA since July 1. While he’s still clearly the favorite for saves with the Yankees, he’ll need to pitch better with David Bednar and Camilo Doval around as well as Luke Weaver.

After allowing a run on Tuesday but still nailing down the save, Williams crumbled here and allowed a towering, go-ahead home run to Josh Lowe. Luckily, that blast only tied the game and the Yankees managed to pull this one out in extra innings. It was Williams’ first blown save since he was removed from the closer’s role in April and there are definitely some unwanted flashbacks happening right now since he’s allowed six earned runs through 11 July innings.

Josh Lowe tripled and José Caballero walked to start the inning in a three-run game, but Williams managed to keep the margin at two, even after an Anthony Volpe error extended the inning. Jonathan Aranda struck out to end the game. It’s Williams’ 17th save in 18 tries.

Williams retired the Phillies in order and struck out two batters to preserve a one-run lead for the Yankees. The 30-year-old right-hander was removed from the closer’s role earlier this season, but hasn’t blown a save since late April. Williams has converted his last 12 save opportunities.

Working with a one-run lead, Williams yielded a leadoff single to Vladimir Guerrero Jr., but he then retired Bo Bichette, Addison Barger and Alejandro Kirk in order. Williams had given up single runs in back-to-back outings, but he’s now a perfect 15-for-15 in his save chances.

Williams started the ninth inning by allowing a long home run to Ronald Acuña Jr. He retired the next three hitters in a row to earn his 14th save. While Williams still has a 4.81 ERA on the year, he’s been much better after a slow start to the season with a 2.46 ERA over his last 27 appearances.

Williams struck out Randy Arozarena and then got soft outs from Jorge Polanco and Luke Raley in the tie game. Even though it was just seven pitches, it probably will rule Williams out for Friday, since he also worked Wednesday and the Yankees generally don’t use relievers three days in a row. Luke Weaver might close then.

Williams had some margin for error in a three-run game tonight, but he didn’t need it after striking out two of the three batters he faced. He’s allowed runs in only three of his last 23 appearances.

Williams’ save was No. 12 on the year for him. It appears the 30-year-old right-hander is continuing to separate himself from Luke Weaver at the backend of the Yankees bullpen. Weaver has allowed eight runs and four home runs in seven appearances since returning from the injured list while Williams has converted his last eight save opportunities.

Williams walked George Springer with one out, intentionally walked Vladimir Guerrero Jr. with a 1-0 count after Springer stole second, got a long flyout that allowed both runners to advance, threw a wild pitch to score Springer and then gave up a clean single to Addison Barger that plated Vlad. It’s a bad result, but it doesn’t give away all of the ground Williams has made up these last two months. He hadn’t allowed a run since May 27, and he has only one blown save on the season. He’s still pretty clearly the Yankees’ primary closer for now.

Williams has righted the ship after a rough start to the season that saw him relinquish the closer’s role to Luke Weaver. While it took an injury to Weaver to get Williams back to closing, it doesn’t look like Williams wants to go back to setting up. He’s been excellent since Weaver went down and even now that he’s back the Yankees seem content to let the saves go to Williams despite manager Aaron Boone’s public comments that both would receive save opportunities.

There was no ninth-inning save chance for the Yankees tonight after Jonathan Loáisiga blew a three-run lead in the seventh, but the team was clearly prepared to go with Luke Weaver in the eighth and Williams in the ninth. They followed through with that plan even with the score tied. Weaver also pitched a scoreless inning tonight after taking a loss Friday in his first appearance back from the injured list.

Luke Weaver, who took a loss in his return from the IL on Friday, didn’t factor in today, as Fernando Cruz set up for Williams. It’s understandable if those rostering Williams are a little nervous with Weaver back, but there’s really no reason for the Yankees to deviate from Williams in the ninth right now. He’s allowed three runs and posted a 24/2 K/B in his last 16 2/3 innings.

With Luke Weaver perhaps returning Friday, things might get complicated for the Yankees in the ninth in the coming days. Manager Aaron Boone refused to commit to a closer before the game today. We’re guessing he mostly sticks with Williams, who has a 1.72 ERA and a 23/2 K/BB in 15 2/3 innings since May 7. In spite of his early struggles, Williams is 9-for-10 in save chances this season.

Williams got Vinnie Pasquantino to fly out and Salvador Perez to ground out before Jac Caglianone struck out to end it. He’s 4-for-4 saving games since Luke Weaver went down.

The Yankees entered the ninth inning with a 6-0 lead, but Mark Leiter Jr. gave up three runs to turn it into a save situation. Williams entered, and he was able to pick up the final two outs while procuring his eighth save of the 2025 campaign. His ERA is still 5.82, but it’s worth noting that ERA was at 9.00 exactly a month ago.

It looked like Williams might open the door for the Red Sox when an awful sequence to Jarren Duran led to a HBP on a 3-0 pitch with one out. However, he rebounded to retire Rafael Devers and Kristen Campbell. Williams improved to 7-for-8 in his save chances this season.

Williams gave up a double and a groundball single before finishing off the Guardians. Both of his saves over the last month have seen him surrender runs, but there was no major concern about tonight. He should be pretty solidly in the closer’s role with Luke Weaver out. However, he might unavailable Wednesday after working three of the last four days.

This makes sense since Williams has been scoreless in 10 of his last 11 appearances while registering a 15/2 K/BB ratio in those 10 innings. He has had more success in the eighth inning than the ninth inning since joining the Yankees, but he has a long track record of success as a closer and should slide back into the role for the next month or more. However, the fact that Boone said “most of the closing” implies that there could be some stray saves for Fernando Cruz or maybe Tim Hill if there is a pocket of left-handed hitters coming up.

Luke Weaver got the night off after back-to-back 20-pitch outings. Williams got the call in the ninth to close out the game with a three-run lead. He immediately gave up a solo homer to Yoán Moncada. Two more hits and a groundout made it a one-run game before he got a pop out to secure the win for the Yankees and his fifth save of the season. It doesn’t seem like Weaver will be relinquishing regular closing duties any time soon.

The Yankees entrusted Williams with the all important 10th inning and the inherited ghost runner on second base after their dramatic comeback. While he loaded the bases and had some tense moments, he left the inning unscathed and opened the door for them to win it right after. It should be noted that Luke Weaver came on for what were the most important outs of this game at the time, after Ian Hamilton walked two to begin the eighth inning and Weaver allowed both of those inherited runners to score. He was called upon as the fireman though and will likely get the next save opportunity. Still, this was a massive step in the right direction for Williams.

Williams appears to be getting most of the blame for the loss tonight, even though it was Luke Weaver on the mound when all of the runs scored. Brought in with a 3-0 lead in the eighth, Williams gave up a soft single in between a pair of walks before being pulled with the bases loaded and two outs. Weaver then entered and gave up two hits to take the blown save and the loss. Williams said afterwards that that wet mound was an issue for him, though obviously everyone else had to deal with that, too. In the end, tonight was probably a wash for both Williams and Weaver. Williams entered the game having pitched three scoreless innings since getting pulled from the closer’s role. This still isn’t the time to go dropping him in fantasy leagues.

Boone added that Luke Weaver will “get a lot” of the save opportunities moving forward, but didn’t rule out the possibility that he could still be used in critical high-leverage spots earlier than the ninth inning. The decision to remove Williams from the role comes after he melted down on Saturday in an ugly blown save against the Blue Jays, which left him with a calamitous 11.25 ERA in his Yankees debut. He’ll operate in lower-leverage spots for now and we’re not dismissing the possibility he turns things around and reclaims the role. However, it’ll be Weaver, who should be rostered in all fantasy formats until further notice, handling the closing duties moving forward.

Boone’s noncommittal response to reporters came in the wake of Friday’s latest ugly meltdown where Williams was charged with three runs in a blown save against the Blue Jays. The 30-year-old elite stopper said Friday that “nothing’s working right now,” after his latest implosion left him with a bloated 11.25 ERA through 10 appearances. It’s abundantly clear that he could use a bit of a reset, even if it’s only temporary. The Yankees will have a chance to think things over during Saturday’s rainout, but fantasy managers should anticipate Luke Weaver being in the mix for saves until further notice. He’s an obvious pickup in all fantasy formats.

Brought in with a two-run lead, Williams gave up a single, hit a batter on a 2-2 pitch and then surrendered a two-run double. The Yankees quickly ushered him out at that point, and the runner later came around to score. Williams also gave up three runs last time out. That technically wasn’t a blown save, though it might as well have been. We imagine this outing will earn him a hopefully brief respite from closing duties, with Luke Weaver taking over for now and Fernando Cruz probably second in line. Dropping Williams in fantasy leagues seems like the wrong call, but it’s probably fine to bench him where applicable. Weaver should be picked up everywhere.

Williams got the call to protect a four-run lead in the final frame and was unable to slam the door. The 30-year-old right-hander melted down, giving up four runs on four hits and a walk to blow the lead. Williams had been pitching better of late, but his early season struggles have led to a 9.00 ERA, 2.25 WHIP, and an 8/7 K/BB ratio across eight frames.
