Luke Weaver had the same line in the eighth. That those two did their jobs so well might have been the highlight for the Mets in his one. The save was Williams’ first since Apr. 5. He’d only had one chance since then and blew it by giving up one run in the ninth on Apr. 19 against the Cubs.

It had looked like Williams was coming on for a traditional save chance with the Mets leading by three runs heading to the ninth inning. As he was trotting in from the bullpen though, Huascar Brazoban (who served up a game-tying grand slam in the eighth), crossed the foul line as he was walking back out to the mound. Since he crossed the line, he had to stay in and face at least one hitter, which he retired. Williams then came on and allowed a couple of singles and a two-out double before striking out Trevor Larnach to end it. Since he only got two outs and started with a clean slate, he couldn’t earn a save. The official scorer gave him the win though after deeming Brazoban ineffective. It’s a minor victory for fantasy managers who have suffered through Williams’ 10.29 ERA and 2.86 WHIP on the season.

Williams played a starring role during New York’s 12th consecutive loss on Tuesday night when he failed to record an out during an ugly meltdown against the Twins where he walked three batters and was charged with a pair of runs. The 31-year-old has struggled mightily in his Mets debut, compiling a bloated 9.95 ERA and 11/6 K/BB ratio across 6 1/3 innings over eight appearances. The hedge here for fantasy managers is to pick up Luke Weaver, who has plenty of closing experience, on the chance that he gets a look in the next save chance for the Mets.

What a mess. Williams entered a tie game in the ninth inning and proceeded to walk the first two batters he faced. Then, a sacrifice bunt turned into a failed fielder’s choice when Mark Vientos tried to be a hero and get the runner heading to third. Then, with the infield in and still no one out, a Baltimore chop from Luke Keaschall bounced over Bo Bichette’s head to give the Twins the lead. Williams then walked in another run before he was mercifully pulled. Over his last three outings, Williams has allowed seven runs and recorded four outs. That has pushed him to a 9.95 ERA on the season.

The Mets were two outs away from snapping a 10-game losing streak, but it wasn’t meant to be. The first hit Williams allowed was an opposite field single from Ian Happ on a really good changeup low and away. Michael Conforto then doubled into the right field corner to tie the game. Williams struck out the other three batters he faced, and there was nothing wrong with the way he was throwing today. It’s his first blown save in three tries.

Francisco Lindor owes Williams one after the outing. To begin the eighth inning, Williams forced a weak groundball from Teoscar Hernández. It should have been a routine play, but Lindor waited back on it at shortstop and Hernández – who busted it out of the box – beat it out. Then there was a walk, a long single, and a loud grand slam from Dalton Rushing. Sadly, Williams has had tendencies to lose focus when things go wrong behind him and this looked like one of those times. This was also his first time pitching in nine days as the Mets are trapped in an eight-game losing streak. After not allowing an earned run up to this point, he now has a 6.75 ERA on the season. Ouch.

Williams got one strikeout while throwing 13-of-21 pitches for strikes. He did put the tying run at the plate, but the 31-year-old was able to keep the Giants from scoring and picked up his second save in a Met uniform.

It’s the first save for Williams of 2026, and his first as a member of the Mets. he struck out one while throwing 10-of-12 pitches for strikes, and he generated four whiffs in that short time. The 2025 season was a massive disappointment, but he’s as good of bet to bounce back in 2026 as anyone.

Williams got his first work with his new team, pitching in a scoreless tied game in the ninth. He worked around a double and a walk, striking out two to keep the Pirates off the board. As long as he can continue to generate strikeouts, Williams is a great bounce-back candidate as the Mets’ closer.

The homer from JJ Wetherholt came on the cutter that Williams has been working on this spring. Other than that, Williams looked fine in throwing five changeups and a couple of fastballs in his nine-pitch outing.

Díaz reportedly got $69 million over three years from the Dodgers. His exit means that Devin Williams, who signed a three-year, $51 million deal with deferrals that brought its value down to about $45 million, probably will be the Mets’ closer. Perhaps there’s still some chance the team could sign Robert Suarez to pitch the ninth.

Williams will pitch at the back-end of the bullpen for the Mets in 2026, but whether he will be their closer or set-up man depends whether New York re-signs Edwin Díaz. At this point that seems unlikely, and assuming Williams is the closer, the 31-year-old should be one of the better relief options in fantasy; even after his less-than-spectacular season with the Yankees in 2025.

Williams gave up a leadoff double and a one-out RBI single to blow a 2-1 lead. He had been dominant in previous eight outings, striking out 18 and allowing only an unearned run from an automatic runner scoring in extra innings (he got the save in that one anyway). This was hardly a disaster, either. Still, he’s probably not going to get the chance to reclaim his job from David Bednar unless Bednar leaves the door open.

After blowing a save against the Rangers on Monday night, Williams was summoned to pitch the bottom of the eighth inning in a scoreless tie on Tuesday night. After getting the first out, he gave up a double to Adolis Garcia and then walked Joc Pederson and Wyatt Langford to load the bases. Rowdy Tellez then dunked a two-run single into center that would prove to be the only scoring in the ballgame. Williams is still probably secure in his role for now, but with David Bednar, Camilo Doval and Luke Weaver all capable of closing games, the leash is tightening.

Williams gave up a home run to Joc Pederson in the ninth inning to tie the game. The 30-year-old right-hander has now been scored on in five of his last seven appearances. Williams has a 5.10 ERA on the season now and a 6.00 ERA since July 1. While he’s still clearly the favorite for saves with the Yankees, he’ll need to pitch better with David Bednar and Camilo Doval around as well as Luke Weaver.

After allowing a run on Tuesday but still nailing down the save, Williams crumbled here and allowed a towering, go-ahead home run to Josh Lowe. Luckily, that blast only tied the game and the Yankees managed to pull this one out in extra innings. It was Williams’ first blown save since he was removed from the closer’s role in April and there are definitely some unwanted flashbacks happening right now since he’s allowed six earned runs through 11 July innings.

Josh Lowe tripled and José Caballero walked to start the inning in a three-run game, but Williams managed to keep the margin at two, even after an Anthony Volpe error extended the inning. Jonathan Aranda struck out to end the game. It’s Williams’ 17th save in 18 tries.

Williams retired the Phillies in order and struck out two batters to preserve a one-run lead for the Yankees. The 30-year-old right-hander was removed from the closer’s role earlier this season, but hasn’t blown a save since late April. Williams has converted his last 12 save opportunities.

Working with a one-run lead, Williams yielded a leadoff single to Vladimir Guerrero Jr., but he then retired Bo Bichette, Addison Barger and Alejandro Kirk in order. Williams had given up single runs in back-to-back outings, but he’s now a perfect 15-for-15 in his save chances.

Williams started the ninth inning by allowing a long home run to Ronald Acuña Jr. He retired the next three hitters in a row to earn his 14th save. While Williams still has a 4.81 ERA on the year, he’s been much better after a slow start to the season with a 2.46 ERA over his last 27 appearances.

Williams struck out Randy Arozarena and then got soft outs from Jorge Polanco and Luke Raley in the tie game. Even though it was just seven pitches, it probably will rule Williams out for Friday, since he also worked Wednesday and the Yankees generally don’t use relievers three days in a row. Luke Weaver might close then.

Williams had some margin for error in a three-run game tonight, but he didn’t need it after striking out two of the three batters he faced. He’s allowed runs in only three of his last 23 appearances.

Williams’ save was No. 12 on the year for him. It appears the 30-year-old right-hander is continuing to separate himself from Luke Weaver at the backend of the Yankees bullpen. Weaver has allowed eight runs and four home runs in seven appearances since returning from the injured list while Williams has converted his last eight save opportunities.

Williams walked George Springer with one out, intentionally walked Vladimir Guerrero Jr. with a 1-0 count after Springer stole second, got a long flyout that allowed both runners to advance, threw a wild pitch to score Springer and then gave up a clean single to Addison Barger that plated Vlad. It’s a bad result, but it doesn’t give away all of the ground Williams has made up these last two months. He hadn’t allowed a run since May 27, and he has only one blown save on the season. He’s still pretty clearly the Yankees’ primary closer for now.

Williams has righted the ship after a rough start to the season that saw him relinquish the closer’s role to Luke Weaver. While it took an injury to Weaver to get Williams back to closing, it doesn’t look like Williams wants to go back to setting up. He’s been excellent since Weaver went down and even now that he’s back the Yankees seem content to let the saves go to Williams despite manager Aaron Boone’s public comments that both would receive save opportunities.

There was no ninth-inning save chance for the Yankees tonight after Jonathan Loáisiga blew a three-run lead in the seventh, but the team was clearly prepared to go with Luke Weaver in the eighth and Williams in the ninth. They followed through with that plan even with the score tied. Weaver also pitched a scoreless inning tonight after taking a loss Friday in his first appearance back from the injured list.

Luke Weaver, who took a loss in his return from the IL on Friday, didn’t factor in today, as Fernando Cruz set up for Williams. It’s understandable if those rostering Williams are a little nervous with Weaver back, but there’s really no reason for the Yankees to deviate from Williams in the ninth right now. He’s allowed three runs and posted a 24/2 K/B in his last 16 2/3 innings.

With Luke Weaver perhaps returning Friday, things might get complicated for the Yankees in the ninth in the coming days. Manager Aaron Boone refused to commit to a closer before the game today. We’re guessing he mostly sticks with Williams, who has a 1.72 ERA and a 23/2 K/BB in 15 2/3 innings since May 7. In spite of his early struggles, Williams is 9-for-10 in save chances this season.
