Sommers joins Detroit’s relief mix ahead of Friday’s game against the Royals. The 25-year-old lefty receives his first call up after posting an encouraging 2.53 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 63/16 K/BB ratio over 57 innings (42 appearances) between Triple-A Toledo and Double-A Erie this season.

The Tigers have been mixing and matching bullpen arms based on their opposition over the past few series and they wanted to add another left-hander to the mix against the Royals. It’ll be the first trip to the big leagues for the 25-year-old southpaw. Sommers has posted a 2.53 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and a 63/16 K/BB ratio over 57 innings between Double-A Erie and Triple-A Toledo this season.

That’s more like it. When the Mats acquired Gilbert back in 2023 for Justin Verlander, he was the 53rd-ranked prospect in baseball. The last two seasons have not gone well, but the 24-year-old former top prospect is starting to heat up. He’s hitting .333/.406/.649 in July with four home runs, 13 RBI, one steal, and a 7/4 K/BB ratio. It’s highly unlikely he sees MLB at-bats this season, but a strong finish could put him in line for a job in 2026.

Gilbert was one of the outfielders the Mets got back in the 2023 trade for Justin Verlander. The 24-year-old was the 53rd-ranked prospect in all of baseball at the time of the trade, but things have not gone well for him in 2025, slashing .222/.337/.348 with four home runs, two steals and 26 RBI in 56 games in Triple-A. Considering he also slashed .215/.313/.393 in 56 games at Triple-A Syracuse last season, there is reason to be skeptical about him reaching the ceiling many had projected for him.

Avans receives his first call up to the majors after hitting .328/.414/.444 with four homers and 16 steals in 48 games this season at the Triple-A level, with top prospect Nick Kurtz hitting the injured list with a hip flexor strain. The 28-year-old long-time minor leaguer signed with the Athletics in the offseason after spending the previous seven years in the Dodgers organization. He is unlikely to play enough to merit consideration for fantasy rosters outside of deep AL-only formats.

Gilbert didn’t play in any games this spring and opened the year on the minor league IL for reasons that weren’t made exactly clear, but he went 9-for-24 with two homers in six games in A-ball and now he’s back where he finished last season. Ideally, the 24-year-old would have been an option to help fill in for the injured José Siri right now. If he can stay healthy and perform, he’ll definitely be a threat to see time in center field for the Mets later this season.
