Wallner was shaking his left hand after getting hit in the sixth, but according to The Athletic’s Dan Hayes, the Twins were just playing matchups when they removed him an inning later.

The pitch was only a few inches inside, and Wallner was trying to check his swing when his top hand got hit. Hopefully, this proves minor. Wallner was showing signs of warming up at the plate, having gone 4-for-8 with a homer and a double in his previous two games.

Wallner’s fourth home run of the season briefly gave the Twins a lead in the fifth inning before they allowed 14 unanswered runs by the Nationals. Alas, Wallner obliterated that homer 420 feet and it was nice to see his raw power shine through in what’s otherwise been a disastrous season so far with a .189 batting average and .613 OPS through 30 games.

It’s not surprising that Wallner is sitting against a lefty, but that makes three of the last four games where he’s sat. Wallner is in a major funk, hitting .168/.275/.284 in 27 games so far. James Outman is hitting ninth in Wallner’s absence.

Wallner has really struggled to begin the season, striking out in 37 percent of his plate appearances and forging a .172/.274/.290 slash. The 28-year-old outfielder will get a break with Austin Martin getting the start in right field against Logan Gilbert and the M’s.

Wallner is hitless in three straight games and 4-for-49 in his last 13 games, leaving him at .172/.274/.290 overall. With his strikeout rate up to 37 percent, a Triple-A stint could be a possibility here. However, his most likely replacement, Alan Roden, just got hurt and won’t be an option.

Wallner is back patrolling right field and batting seventh following a brief one-game absence due to a lingering rib issue. It doesn’t appear to be a significant concern. The 28-year-old slugger has three homers in 20 games this season.

James Outman will start in his place and will bat ninth for the Twins against Brady Singer and the Reds on Sunday afternoon. If this continues to linger for Wallner, the Twins may ultimately opt to put him on the injured list to make sure it fully heals.

Wallner had a 110-mph, 409-foot homer and a 50-mph, three-foot single in the contest, giving him his first multihit game of the year. He did strike out two more times, bringing his total there up to 18 through 39 plate appearances. He fanned a total of nine times in the three-game series against the Rays.

It’s not every day one sees a platinum sombrero in a lineup that managed to score 10 runs and win, but this is the 17th time it’s happened in MLB history. Julio Rodríguez last did it in a 12-1 Mariners victory two years ago. Wallner went down swinging all five times up today. He’s 4-for-28 with two homers and 14 strikeouts to start the year.

Even with a left-handed pitcher going, it seems that Wallner is going to be in the starting lineup. A big reason for that is that the Twins only have one right-handed hitter on the bench, Austin Martin, and he’s starting in place of Trevor Larnach. Every other bench hitter bats left-handed, which means the Twins may not be able to platoon Wallner as much as they used to. That seems like great news for fantasy managers, but Wallner is also a career .181/.273/.368 hitter off of lefties with a 31 percent strikeout rate. However, last season was his best season ever against southpaws, so maybe he will carry that over.

Wallner was hitting sixth today against lefty Steven Matz. In his previous three starts against righties, he hit cleanup twice but also sixth once, with Trevor Larnach hitting cleanup then. One hopes Wallner will be hitting ahead of Larnach against righties in the regular season. Even in a down 2025, Wallner still out OPS+'d Larnach 110 to 99. Wallner has a 129 OPS+ the last three years, compared to 104 for Larnach. Wallner should also have a better chance of remaining in the Twins lineup than Larnach when the team is facing a lefty.

Seelinger, 30, did a nice job in a minor league role for the Tigers in 2025, compiling a 2.74 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and a 75/25 K/BB ratio across 65 2/3 frames between Double-A Erie and Triple-A Toledo. He has still yet to make his big league debut after toiling in the minor leagues for eight seasons, but that breakthrough could finally come if he continues to dominate at the Triple-A level in 2026.

Wallner will miss the rest of the season. The 27-year-old’s campaign ends with a slash of .202/.311/.464 with 22 homers and four stolen bases over 104 games. Assuming he sticks in the organization, he should be a middle-of-the-order option for Minnesota to begin 2026.

It’s the second time in the last three games that Wallner has found himself on the bench against an opposing right-hander, which isn’t ideal. It may have something to do with him hitting .170/.284/.386 with a 34/10 K/BB ratio over 102 plate appearances in his last 25 games. James Outman will start in his place in right field and will bat ninth against Ryne Nelson and the Diamondbacks on Saturday evening in Minneapolis.

Wallner started a five-run uprising with a one-out walk off of Jonathan Cannon in the fourth inning. He would score the Twins’ first run on a two-out RBI single by Ryan Fitzgerald. Wallner then belted a 408-foot (107.7 mph EV) solo shot off of Tyler Alexander in the fifth that increased the Twins’ advantage to 6-4. He also led off the seventh inning with a walk but was erased on a double play. For the season, the 25-year-old slugger is now slashing .209/.313/.483 with 21 long balls and 36 RBI.

Wallner struck out his first three times up before taking Jeff Hoffman deep in a 4-4 game. It was his fourth homer in three games and 20th in 315 plate appearances this season. Of the previous 19, 13 had come with the bases empty and six with one man on. He hadn’t had a three-RBI game this season until connecting on his solo shot and two-run homer Monday. Now he has two.

A truly baffling thing is that the Twins seem to think more of Trevor Larnach than Wallner, who was in the lineup tonight after sitting out two of the previous four games against righties. Wallner has the better offensive numbers now and over the course of his career, and he almost always plays the field when he starts, since Larnach is almost exclusively a DH now, Wallner has been really bad with runners on this season, which we assume is factoring into the Twins’ thinking. He did hit one of his homers with a man on tonight, so that’s something. In 311 plate appearances this season, he’s driven in himself 19 times and teammates 13 times.

Wallner will be away from the club for a couple days, likely the rest of this weekend’s series against the Royals, on paternity leave. The 27-year-old outfielder launched his 16th round-tripper of the season during Friday’s series opener. It’ll be rookie Carson McCusker coming up to take his active roster spot.

Wallner’s home run was his 16th of the year. The 27-year-old outfielder hit a solo shot off Seth Lugo in the first inning. Wallner homered for the fifth time in his last 11 games. He’s hitting just .218, but the power numbers continue to be there for Wallner.

Wallner’s home run was his 15th of the season. The 27-year-old outfielder hit a solo shot off Casey Mize in the sixth inning that traveled 437 feet and 109 mph off the bat. Wallner crushing right-handed pitching is nothing new, but he might see additional time against left-handed pitching due to the reality of the Twins roster in the aftermath of the trade deadline. Wallner is hitting .217 with an .817 OPS and 26 RBI on the year.

Even with the Twins facing a left-handed pitcher, Wallner was not only in the lineup but also batted third in the order. This is the new reality for the Twins after their active trade deadline saw them lose multiple lineup regulars. Wallner is still hitting just .215 on the year, but he should play a lot the rest of the way making him useful for fantasy managers looking for power.

Wallner still isn’t hitting for average, but the homers and walks have his OPS up to .779. Fantasy value will remain tough to come by, especially with the Twins having lost Carlos Correa and Willi Castro permanently and Byron Buxton temporarily. Maybe those absences will at least result in him seeing extra starts against left-handers.

Wallner’s home run was his 12th of the year. The 27-year-old outfielder crushed a solo shot off Jake Irvin in the second inning. Wallner has dealt with injuries this year, but his power is still legitimate. His home run was his fifth so far in July. He’s hitting .203 with a .750 OPS and 21 RBI this year.

Wallner made Cade Horton pay for a two-strike sweeper in the fourth inning that caught way too much of the plate for a loud solo home run that left the bat at 113 mph. That wound up being the last run scored in what became an impressive showing by both bullpens. He missed a chunk of the season due to injury, but this was Wallner’s first multi-hit game since April 16 as he tries to get going before the All-Star break.

Wallner was responsible for the only run of the game for Minnesota, as he took Cade Gibson deep in the seventh inning. He’s now gone deep eight times with 14 RBI, and it’s worth remembering that those numbers have come in just 47 games and 151 at-bats. Alas, his .199 batting average is hard to deal with in fantasy baseball. Perhaps he’ll get hot again soon.
