Arenado was ultimately traded to the Diamondbacks, which is where he told the Cardinals preferred to play, but the Athletics “would have absorbed more money than the Diamondbacks.” While the Athletics could still pursue options like Eugenio Suarez and Yoan Moncada, Rosenthal reports that they “intend to use Max Muncy at third base, with Brett Harris and Darell Hernaiz also in the mix.”

Clarke, who was non-tendered by the Royals in November, returns to his original organization here; he had a 4.99 ERA in 20 starts and 58 relief appearances for Arizona from 2019-21 before being non-tendered for the first time. The Royals let him go even though he had a career-best 3.25 ERA in 55 1/3 innings last season, but he is homer-prone and probably a worse fit there with the team moving the fences in. The Diamondbacks figure to treat him as a middle reliever.

Varland was claimed off waivers from the White Sox in August but then spent the rest of the season in Triple-A. The 29-year-old has a 4.82 ERA and a 47/24 K/BB in 46 2/3 with the Brewers, Dodgers and White Sox the last two years.

It’s an intriguing strategy considering Arenado’s bat has fallen off as he has gotten older, but his defense at third base remains strong. He also has seen his power decline, so he would not be the conventional choice for a first baseman. According to Rosenthal, the sticking point “was that the Padres were unwilling to take on as much of Arenado’s salary as the D-Backs,” which is also curious because the Diamondbacks only took on $11 million of Arenado’s $42 million. Perhaps their pursuit wasn’t overly enthusiastic, but the Padres are clearly looking for a solution at first base.

Loáisig became a free agent after the Yankees declined a $5 million option for 2026. The injury-prone 31-year-old has a 3.54 ERA in 249 1/3 innings over parts of eight seasons. He last topped 30 innings in 2022, and he’s thrown more than 50 innings just once, when he had a 2.17 ERA over 70 2/3 innings in 2021. He finished last season on the IL with a back strain and an elbow strain that came about while he was trying to rehab.

This deal came together quickly, and, according to The Arizona Republic’s Nick Piecoro, the Diamondbacks are only paying Arenado $5 million this year and $6 million next year, thanks to the money the Cardinals are sending over. Arenado hit .237/.289/.377 with 12 home runs and 52 RBI for the Cardinals in 107 games last season while battling injuries. It was the first time he had played under 144 games in a season since 2014. The 34-year-old is no longer the offensive player that he was in his prime, but he remains a good defender with elite contact rates, both of which will be a boon to the Diamondbacks. Of course, this means that Arizona’s top prospect, Jordan Lawlar, is, once again, without a clear starting job heading into spring training.

Hatch heads to Arizona as additional relief depth after posting a 6.02 FIP and 22/17 K/BB ratio over 34 innings across 12 appearances between the Twins and Royals this past season. The well-traveled 31-year-old has made 51 appearances (seven starts) in the big leagues dating back to the pandemic-shortened 2020 campaign.

Gurriel underwent surgery to repair a torn ACL in his right knee back in September and is likely to be sidelined until at least the second half of next season, even if he makes a lightning-quick recovery. The 32-year-old corner outfielder is entering the final year of his deal with Arizona and could make an impact for fantasy managers over the final few months once he makes it back. There should be a clearer return timeline once he’s officially cleared to resume baseball activities. The Diamondbacks decision to ship Jake McCarthy to the division-rival Rockies reads like a quiet vote of confidence in top prospect Ryan Waldschmidt, who hit .309/.423/.498 with nine homers and 19 steals in 300 plate appearances over 66 games for Double-A Amarillo this past season, and now enters spring training with a real opportunity to compete for a starting role while Gurriel is sidelined.

Grosz heads to Arizona just a few months after arriving in Colorado from the Yankees as part of the Ryan McMahon deal at the trade deadline. The 23-year-old righty was an 11th-round pick back in 2023 and spent all of last season at the High-A level where he fanned 135 batters over 125 1/3 innings of work. He’s an interesting pitching prospect for the Diamondbacks’ front office to sink their teeth into considering McCarthy was out of options and likely to be on the move at the end of spring training.

Dubin fortifies Arizona’s bullpen depth heading into spring training after being removed from Baltimore’s 40-man roster at the start of the offseason. The 30-year-old journeyman posted a serviceable 4.95 FIP and 28/11 K/BB ratio across 33 2/3 innings over 30 appearances between the Astros and Orioles this past season. He’ll operate in middle relief for the Diamondbacks if he makes the club’s Opening Day roster.

Diamondbacks’ general manager Mike Hazen said last week that he wanted to resolve Marte’s status in the near future, and while he was willing to listen to offers on his 32-year-old superstar, nothing came close to materializing. Of course, Hazen isn’t bound to anything here and this could very well just be a leveraging ploy to see if he can get any potential suitors to up the ante. The most likeliest scenario is still that Marte opens the season as the Diamondbacks’ starting second baseman.

Nelson had been projected by MLBTradeRumors.com to earn $3.3 million via arbitration, so this seems like an equitable solution for both sides. He was terrific in a swingman role for the Diamondbacks in 2025, registering a 3.39 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and a 132/41 K/BB ratio over 154 innings in 33 appearances (23 starts). He should be locked into the team’s rotation heading into 2026 and makes for a strong mid-round option for fantasy purposes.

Despite a brutal season at the dish in 2025, McCarthy earns a decent raise in his first season of arbitration eligibility. The Diamondbacks still have a logjam of outfielders on their roster heading into 2026 though and there has been plenty of speculation that either McCarthy or Alek Thomas could be moved elsewhere. Unless he winds up in a full-time gig someplace, it’s unlikely that the speedy 28-year-old will gain relevance from a fantasy perspective.

Smith sees a nice salary bump in his second season of arbitration eligibility, going from $1.5 million to $2.25. The versatile 29-year-old slashed .258/.362/.434 with eight homers, 28 RBI and a 92/41 K/BB ratio over 288 plate appearances with the Diamondbacks in 2025. Unless the Diamondbacks add a first baseman, Smith appears to be in line for a much larger role in 2026.

Ginkel had been projected by MLBTradeRumors.com to earn $3 million via arbitration, so it feels like a fair deal for both sides. He was limited to just 29 appearances with the Diamondbacks in 2025 before being shelved for the season with a right shoulder strain in early August. When healthy, the 31-year-old hurler has proven to be a viable late-inning weapon for the D’Backs.

The 30-year-old southpaw will earn a slight raise over the $2.95 million that he took home in 2025. Puk underwent Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery in June and is expected to miss most of the 2026 season while recovering. He’ll be arbitration-eligible one final time before hitting free agency.

Thompson, 33, was limited to 41 1/3 innings last season and his 3.92 ERA was his worst mark since his rookie year in 2020, making him a non-tender candidate. Still, the D-backs though it was worth about $4 million to bring him back for his last season before free agency. There’s very little in front of him in the Arizona pen, so though he’s never been thought of as a closer, he could be in position to earn some saves this year.

Moreno has been bitten by the injury bug in consecutive seasons, but he did take a clear step forward offensively by hitting .285/.353/.433 last year. He seems well on his way to establishing himself as a top-notch catcher if the durability is there.

Thomas stayed healthy last season, but he managed only a .249/.289/.370 line with his strikeout rate taking a big jump to 26%. He’s also already showing signs of decline on defense at age 25. This is probably a make-or-break season for him if he wants to be taken seriously as a starting outfielder. He’s looked more like a reserve of late.

Marte is still available in trade talks at the moment, but Hazen might shut down things soon if no one steps up with the offer the D-backs want. “But this isn’t going to continue to linger,” he said. “We need to focus our offseason. Again, my gut this whole time was that [a trade of Marte] wasn’t going to happen, and I think it seems likely that that’s the case and we want to focus on other things we need to do.” The Red Sox, Rays and Tigers are among the teams to have asked about Marte, who is entering the second year of a seven-year, $116.5 million extension.

The 6-foot-4, 285-pound Baker has appeared in 73 games for the Cardinals over the last three seasons, hitting .206/.317/.338 with four homers in 189 plate appearances. He’s batting .250/.347/.508 with 104 homers in 414 career games in Triple-A, which is where he’ll probably open up next season. With his power and ample walk rate, it still seems possible that he could contribute on the short side of a platoon in the majors, but he might be running out of chances.

This would make sense considering the Mets actually gave the Athletics cash to encourage them to take McNeil in a trade. It seems that the Mets were eager to move on from McNeil, which might mean that they have an intended replacement for him. However, that would also mean the Mets are looking to put Marte back in center field, where he last played in 2023. Nothing is imminent, but this remains a situation to monitor and there are a lot of moving pieces here.

Jarvis was the 18th pick of the 2020 MLB Draft, and he didn’t have much success in his time at the highest level. The 27-year-old will now hit the waiver wire, and if he goes unclaimed he could report back to Triple-A Reno or elect free agency.
