We assume Myers will return as the primary center fielder, though he has some new competition there in the form of Victor Mesa Jr. Both should play plenty, though. Myers hit .337/.375/.482 in 29 games before going on the IL with an oblique strain, so he definitely deserves to be in the lineup as often as he can handle.

Mervis had an option remaining, but the Marlins will either trade him or expose him to waivers. We’re not sure anyone will be eager to add him. He did have seven homers in 134 plate appearances, good for second place on the ballclub, but he hit just .175/.254/.383 with 50 strikeouts and unimpressive exit velocity numbers. He seems like a Triple-A guy right now. The Marlins will likely use Eric Wagaman at first now, since he was about to lose outfield playing time with Dane Myers back.

It’s unfortunate that this comes so soon after the three-error inning, but Simon wasn’t long for the majors regardless. It’s just a little surprising that he’s being DFA’d in favor of Jack Winkler instead of simply being sent down once Xavier Edwards returns. Simon, 25, hit .234/.327/.277 in 56 plate appearances for the Marlins.

Winkler, a former A’s prospect, is in the majors for the first time. He hit .275/.331/.423 with 15 steals in 15 attempts for Jacksonville, which is a step up from what he typically hit in the A’s system. Still, he’s probably a 26th man at best, and he could return to the minors when Xavier Edwards is activated.

Both players have options remaining, but it looks like they’re being subtracted from the 40-man anyway. Heriberto Hernandez will probably be taking Mervis’s spot. Simon seemed to be the likely candidate to go when Xavier Edwards was activated from the IL, though it’s not clear if Edwards, who is making the move to second base, is ready just yet.

Curiously, the Marlins also have fellow outfielder Heriberto Hernandez joining the team. Myers can take Graham Pauley’s roster spot, but someone else will have to go (Matt Mervis?) if Hernandez is activated.

The 24-year-old infielder was slashing just .210/.261/.284 with zero homers, five RBI and a 21/6 K/BB ratio in 89 plate appearances with the Marlins. They’ll make a corresponding move prior to Friday’s game which could be the highly-anticipated return of Xavier Edwards.

Interestingly, will play second base on Thursday, and “Miami plans for him to move there and keep Otto Lopez at shortstop when Edwards is reinstated from the IL.” Edwards has a -6 Outs Above Average this season at shortstop and was -10 last year, so this seems to be the right move.

Ramírez put together the strongest performance of his rookie campaign out of the leadoff spot during Wednesday afternoon’s back-and-forth slugfest at Petco Park, finishing 4-for-5 with four RBI. The 23-year-old catcher took Padres starter Kyle Hart deep for a solo shot in the fourth inning – his seventh big fly of the year – before adding a pair of run-scoring singles later in the contest. He’s off to a phenomenal start at the dish, hitting .262/.318/.525 with 17 runs scored, seven homers, 17 RBI and one steal through 31 games.

This one had to feel extra special for Faucher, who grew up in nearby Chula Vista and went to UC-Irvine. The local product was tasked with protecting a two-run lead at Petco Park and needed just eight pitches (five strikes) to slam the door. He got the call after breakout star Ronny Henriquez served up a go-ahead homer to Gavin Sheets with two outs in the seventh inning, but came back out to hurl a scoreless eighth inning.

It’s simply not happening. Alcantara’s struggles continued Wednesday afternoon at Petco Park as he surrendered seven hits and allowed at least four earned runs for the sixth consecutive start since April 29. He threw just 44 of 71 pitches for strikes, walking four batters in the process, and failed to record a strikeout for the first time since April 6, 2019. The fastball velocity continues to be there for Alcantara in his return from Tommy John surgery, but he somehow managed to generate only one swinging strike in this contest, which seems almost impossible. He’ll square off against the Rockies on Tuesday in his next start, but there’s zero reason fantasy managers should trust him given his recent performance.

Sánchez singled to start the game in to top of the first and scored Miami’s first run on a base hit by Kyle Stowers. He’d fly out to end the inning as the Marlins hit around the order in a six-run inning. Sánchez added two more hits in the game for a three-hit effort. The 27-year-old outfielder is hitting .248/.349/.360 with three homers, 14 RBI and five steals across 146 plate appearances.

Meyer gave up a solo homer to Fernando Tatis Jr. to lead off the bottom of the first inning. A walk, hit, and an error brought two more runs in to score for San Diego in the second. Two hits, a walk, and a sacrifice fly plated two more runs for the Padres in the third. Two errors in the fourth would knock Meyer from the game at 74 pitches. He did not record a strikeout. The 26-year-old right-hander ends the day with a 4.53 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and a 63/19 K/BB ratio across 59 2/3 innings. He’ll take on the Rockies in Miami on Monday.

There might not be a spot for Myers in Miami’s crowded outfield mix with with prospect Victor Mesa Jr. ascending to the big leagues earlier this week. Yet, he’s close to making it back after hitting the shelf back in mid-May with a right oblique strain.

Edwards hit the injured list back in mid-May with a back strain. There’s no timetable for his return at the moment, but it’s a positive update that he’s making some recent progress. The 25-year-old speedster should rejoin Miami’s nucleus at some point in June.

Sánchez extended the lead for the Marlins to 3-0 with a solo homer off Randy Vásquez in the second inning. It’d be the last run for Miami in the extra-innings loss. He also singled and walked to improve his slash to a still-shaky .231/.338/.347. It’s worth noting that has come over a sample of just 33 games, but a lack of a large sample isn’t a good reason to add Sánchez to a fantasy roster.

Weathers, 25, was facing his former club, and he performed well. He did issue three walks, but he compensated with six strikeouts while allowing just three hits. It’s a very small sample of 15 innings and three starts, but Weathers has been excellent with a 1.15 ERA and 14/4 K/BB ratio in that time. He’ll get the Giants next weekend.

Mesa will be active for Monday’s contest against the Padres, but isn’t in the starting lineup. The 23-year-old prospect missed time at the outset of the year with a hamstring injury, but was hitting .300 with one homer in six games since returning to action at the Triple-A level. His fantasy appeal is strictly limited to NL-only formats at this juncture, but he’s certainly talented enough to make an impact, if he gets a real chance to play everyday.

Hill heads back to the injured list for the second time this season with a left wrist sprain. The 29-year-old center fielder missed nearly one month the previous time back in mid-April. It’ll be prospect Victor Mesa Jr. taking his spot on the roster with Kyle Stowers moving over to center field in his absence.

Mesa traveled with the Marlins to San Diego, according to multiple reports, but it’s unclear whether he’ll be activated for Monday’s series opener. The 23-year-old outfielder was hitting .300 with one homer in six games this season at the Triple-A level after returning earlier this month from a hamstring injury.

The 22-year-old infielder opened the scoring in the ballgame as he plated Matt Mervis with a sacrifice fly off of Kyle Hendricks in the third inning. Sanoja then smacked a one-out double off of Hendricks in the fifth inning and scored on an RBI double off the bat of Jesús Sánchez. With his two-hit attack, Sanoja is now slashing .252/.287/.336 with one homer, 12 RBI and three stolen bases (in six attempts) over 116 plate appearances on the season.

Sánchez laced a run-scoring double into center field off of Kyle Hendricks in the fifth inning, extending the Marlins’ early lead to 3-0. That would be his lone hit in four at-bats on the afternoon. For the season, the 27-year-old outfielder is slashing just .222/.328/.316 with two homers, 13 RBI and five stolen bases across 137 plate appearances since his return from the injured list.

The 24-year-old right-hander looked awfully impressive in doing so, getting Yoan Moncada on a line drive to the shortstop before retiring Taylor Ward and Jorge Soler each on swinging third strikes to end it. Henriquez has registered a stellar 1.78 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 35/13 K/BB ratio over 25 1/3 innings through his first 23 appearances on the season and could be in line for more save chances if he continues to dominate like this.

The 27-year-old right-hander scattered three hits and two walks on the impressive afternoon. Both of the walks that he issued came to the final two hitters that he faced before turning the ball over to the bullpen in the sixth inning. That was also the only time the Angels put two runners on base against him in the game. Cabrera piled up 18 swings and misses on 87 pitches on the day — 11 of those on his curveball alone — while registering a terrific CSW of 36 percent. He’ll look to replicate this fine effort as he brings a 4.73 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and a 43/16 K/BB ratio (40 innings) into Saturday’s tilt against the Giants.

Norby gave the Marlins some cushion by extending their lead to 6-1 with a three-run blast. The rookie 24-year-old has homered three times while driving in 15 runs while hitting a very respectable .288/.331/.450 over his 110 at-bats. He appears to have a very bright future at the hot corner.

Quantrill was pulled after throwing just 46 pitches, which is a little weird. he allowed three hits and no walks, and he was able to strike out two before exiting. This didn’t appear to be injury related, so maybe the Marlins just didn’t trust Quantrill and his 6.09 ERA to face the Angels lineup another time through the order. Huh. He’s scheduled to face the Giants on Friday.

The Marlins went on to lose 14-1 tonight, but that was hardly Weathers’ fault. He struck out four and walked none while throwing 80 pitches in his second start back from the IL. The only damage came on Kyle Tucker’s homer in the first. He’ll likely make his next start in San Diego on Monday.

That’s two nightmare outings in two days from the Marlins’ preferred closing options in Jesús Tinoco and Faucher. It’d seem to be good news for Anthony Bender, who got the Marlins’ first save back on Apr. 1 but has none since. He has a 1.89 ERA in 19 innings this season, compared to 6.60 for Tinoco, who has four saves, and 5.63 for Faucher, who has two saves.

Sánchez’s homer started the bottom of the first and his triple, on a hard smash down the first base line, won it in the ninth. The balls were hit 112.1 and 113.0 mph, respectively. It’s been a very quiet start for Sánchez since he missed the first three weeks with an oblique strain, but he might be turning things around now. He also improved to 5-for-5 stealing bases tonight.
