Brown was also considered questionable ahead of Game 3 on Friday, ultimately logging 34 minutes. With Jrue Holiday (hamstring) already out, look for Brown to take on his usual role as the Celtics aim to take a 3-1 series lead. If he does not play, Sam Hauser and Payton Pritchard would take on expanded roles.

Brown followed up his 36-point explosion in Game 2 of the series with a subpar game Friday. The 28-year-old small forward had 19 points on 14 shots, but turned the ball over six times. He was -8 in 33 minutes in a two-point loss for the Celtics. Brown continues to deal with a knee issue that has bothered him down the stretch of the regular season. He’ll look to bounce back in Game 4 Sunday.

Tatum came back from a nasty wrist injury that knocked him out of Game 1 and caused him to miss Game 2. The 27-year-old small forward led the way for the Celtics. Tatum had 36 points on 22 shots including four made three-pointers. He struggled to take care of the ball with seven turnovers, though. Overall, it was certainly encouraging that Tatum was able to play 39 minutes even though the Celtics ultimately lost the game.

Carter Jr.'s 10 points may not seem like much, but he was the only Magic player in double figures outside of Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner. The 26-year-old center also added 12 rebounds to earn himself a double-double. He’ll continue to be a crucial piece of the Magic’s supporting cast as they look to even the series in Game 4 Sunday.

Wagner was hardly efficient with 32 points on 27 shots in Game 3, but with neither team reaching 100 points his point total was plenty. Wagner was one of only three Magic players in double figures in Game 3. While the Magic won Game 3, Banchero’s game was much like the first games. The 22-year-old power forward was able to score seemingly at will, but his assist total took a hit with his supporting cast outside of Franz Wagner struggling to score. Banchero has 97 points through the first three games of the series. Orlando will look to even the series against the defending champion Celtics Sunday.

Tatum’s status has been upgraded to questionable, giving him a chance to play, though he’s not out of the woods just yet. The 27-year-old small forward missed Game 2 with a right distal radius bone bruise. Al Horford would likely start for Tatum again if he’s ruled out while Payton Pritchard would see increased opportunities. The Celtics would like to lean heavily on Jaylen Brown, who is also questionable with a knee injury.

Tatum missed Wednesday’s Game 2 victory with an injured right wrist, and he appears on track to remain out Friday night. Al Horford moved into the starting lineup, while Tatum’s absence also meant more opportunities for Payton Pritchard. After scoring just four points in Game 1, Carter was more impactful on that end of the floor Wednesday night. He shot 75 percent from the field and made all three of his three-point attempts. The eight rebounds were also solid, but, as was the case in Game 1, Carter did not record any defensive stats. During the regular season, he averaged 0.8 steals and 0.6 blocks per game, so that is not a huge surprise. However, given Orlando’s offensive struggles outside of Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner, Carter’s play and production are critical if the Magic are to have any chance of winning this series. Trailing two games to none, Orlando hosts Game 3 on Friday.

After shooting below 50 percent from the field and committing five turnovers in Sunday’s series-opening defeat, Wagner was more efficient in Game 2. He only committed two turnovers and was one blocked shot shy of a complete stat line. Given the struggles of Orlando’s supporting cast, the Magic will need an even better version of Wagner if they’re to have a chance of winning this series. The scene shifts to Orlando, with Game 3 set for Friday night.

Through the first two games of the series, Banchero has scored 68 points on 26-of-52 shooting from the field. There’s no denying the fact that the third-year forward is getting what he wants as a scorer. However, due to the inability of some of his Magic teammates to hit shots, Banchero’s assist tally has not been as robust as it could be. In many instances, role players tend to perform better at home. The Magic, who are staring at a 0-3 deficit, certainly hope that will be the case in Game 3 on Friday.

While he wasn’t as explosive offensively as he was in Sunday’s Game 1 victory, White performed well as Boston took a 2-0 series lead on Wednesday. The issue for him was three-point shooting, as the Celtics guard was just 3-of-10 on the night. However, White recorded solid rebound and assist numbers and was third on the team in scoring. Backcourt partner Jrue Holiday added 11 points, four rebounds, six assists and one blocked shot as Boston successfully navigated not having Jayson Tatum due to his wrist injury. Game 3 is on Friday in Orlando.

With Jayson Tatum (wrist) unavailable, Horford was inserted into the Celtics’ starting lineup for Game 2. The veteran big was just 1-of-4 from beyond the arc, but he provided solid production in the rebound and assist categories. Boston also received solid contributions from Payton Pritchard, who added 14 points (5-of-11 FGs, 1-of-3 FTs), three rebounds, one steal and three three-pointers in 32 minutes off the bench. If Tatum remains out for Friday’s Game 3, expect Horford and Pritchard to shoulder heavier workloads again.

After shooting 1-of-8 from the field in Game 1 on Sunday, Porzingis rebounded in a big way on Wednesday. With no Jayson Tatum (wrist) in the lineup, the Celtics needed more from the 7-foot-3 forward/center, and he took full advantage of the foul line. It’s good that he did, as Porzingis missed all five of his three-point attempts. He also suffered a cut on his forehead during the third quarter due to a Goga Bitadze forearm. Porzingis did return early in the fourth quarter after getting the cut (and his scalp) cleaned up, so he should be good to go for Friday’s Game 3 in Orlando.

The Celtics were shorthanded for Game 2, as Jayson Tatum (wrist) was unable to play after being injured during the fourth quarter of the series opener. The reigning champs needed Brown to step up, and he answered the call as Boston took a 2-0 series lead. Not only did he record a 30-point double-double, but he did so efficiently, shooting over 50 percent from the field. Even better for Boston was that Brown’s right knee did not appear to give him any difficulty despite logging 42 minutes. That remains something to watch as the turnaround will be quick, as Game 3 is in Orlando on Friday.

Considered day-to-day after falling hard on his wrist during the fourth quarter of Sunday’s series opener, Tatum will not play in Game 2. During the regular season, Al Horford was the replacement in the starting lineup when the Celtics were forced to play without a starter; that should be the case on Wednesday. Previous reports indicated that Tatum would be considered “day-to-day”, so this shouldn’t be a lengthy absence for him. Tatum took a hard fall in the fourth quarter of Game 1, and though he remained in the game, he left early after looking uncomfortable. Tatum’s status for Game 2 is a monster storyline, and if the superstar forward is not able to go, his playing time could be filled with a committee approach. Payton Pritchard, Sam Hauser and Al Horford should see bumps in playing time if Tatum is sidelined.

Give Carter credit for his work on the boards and for being Kristaps Porzingis’ primary defender for most of Game 1. However, the offensive production was lackluster, a trend that also persisted during the regular season. Carter’s average of 9.1 per game was the lowest of his NBA career; this was the first season in which he failed to average double figures. Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner will do most of the heavy lifting offensively, but they’re going to need help in this series. Fellow starters Carter, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope (6/4/2/3 with two three-pointers) and Cory Joseph (zero points, two assists) combining to score 10 points on 4-of-12 shooting isn’t good enough. Game 2 is on Wednesday night.

Wagner did record a complete stat line in Sunday’s series opener, but the efficiency left something to be desired. Worse than the field goal percentage was the fact that he recorded as many turnovers as assists, finishing with five of each. Given the decided disadvantage the Magic are at offensively in this series, they’re going to need a consistently elite Wagner if they’re to have a chance of winning this series. He’ll look to bounce back in Game 2 on Wednesday.

Banchero was excellent in Game 1, scoring 19 points in the first half and another 17 after the halftime break. Unfortunately for the Magic, he was the only player who could consistently create opportunities offensively. A difficult matchup for most teams due to his combination of size, athleticism and skill set, this could be a big series for Banchero individually. However, the prevailing question is whether or not Orlando will be able to generate enough offense collectively to have a chance of beating the reigning champions. Game 2 is on Wednesday night.

Pritchard has been the favorite to win Sixth Man of the Year honors for most of this season, and he showed why on Sunday. With some of Boston’s stars having slow days at the office, Pritchard provided excellent offensive value off the bench. Add in Derrick White’s 30 points and Jrue Holiday (9/3/5/3 with three three-pointers) hitting three timely third-quarter threes while playing stifling defense, and the Celtics were able to take care of business in Game 1. Pritchard’s ability to provide scoring in quick bursts will be important in this series, especially if the Magic can slow down star wings Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum.

White was one of the Celtics who stepped up to lead the reigning champions to a win in Sunday’s series opener. With Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown and Kristaps Porzingis (5/6/2/4/1 in 26 minutes) combining to score 38 points on 15-of-44 shooting, White came up huge, making at least two shots in all four quarters. He had one 30-point game during last season’s run to the title, Boston’s Game 4 win over the Heat in the first round of the playoffs. Given the strength of Orlando’s wing defenders, this may be a series in which the Celtics’ guards are difference-makers, as was the case in Game 1. Game 2 is on Wednesday night.

In addition to the victory, the good news for the Celtics on Sunday was that Brown’s right knee did not appear to give him any trouble. The time off, with the Celtics’ guard having missed the team’s final three regular-season games, appeared to do Brown some good health-wise. He didn’t have the best afternoon from a scoring standpoint. Still, the improved production offered by Derrick White and Payton Pritchard helped the reigning champs compensate for their three primary scorers having lackluster days. Game 2 is on Wednesday.

Tatum got his 2025 playoffs off to a slow start, and that was before he landed hard on a drive to the basket during the fourth quarter. The Celtics star landed on his already-injured right wrist, and although he stayed in the game, the injury was a concern. Tatum would eventually get the wrist taped, but he never looked comfortable, even after exiting for good with a little over two minutes remaining. Game 2 of the series is on Wednesday; hopefully, the extra day off does Tatum some good regarding his right wrist.

Wagner struggled with his shot on Tuesday but contributed in other ways as Orlando earned the seventh seed in the East. The 13 rebounds were the most he’s grabbed in a game this season, and the Magic wing only hit double figures in that category twice before Tuesday. Add in the assists and steals; all wasn’t lost for DFS players who slotted Wagner into their lineups. That said, Wagner will need to be much better if the Magic are to have any chance of knocking off the Celtics in the first round.

Carter was excellent on Tuesday, and the time off that comes with earning the seventh seed should benefit him. The Magic center rolled his right ankle during the first half and banged knees with a Hawks defender during the third quarter. The good news is that neither injury forced Carter out of Tuesday’s game immediately, and Orlando pulling away during the fourth quarter got him a little more time on the bench late. The Magic don’t play Boston in Game 1 of their first-round series until Sunday, which should help Carter regain strength.
