With Gafford being considered questionable for Saturday’s game, that’s a step in the right direction for a player who’s been listed as doubtful for being ruled out of recent contests. The Mavericks will be without Anthony Davis (calf) and Dereck Lively II (knee), so they can use Gafford in any capacity. If Gafford can’t play, Dwight Powell’s minutes will increase, and the Mavericks will have to go small when Powell isn’t on the floor.

Davis left Wednesday’s win over the Pacers during the first quarter with what was described at the time as lower left leg soreness. He has since been diagnosed with a low-grade left calf strain and will miss at least two games: Saturday vs. Detroit in Mexico City and Monday at Houston. With Dereck Lively II and Daniel Gafford also dealing with injuries, the Mavericks must rely on a combination of Dwight Powell and smaller lineups that don’t include a legitimate center. Powell isn’t a great fantasy option, but he’s worth considering in deep leagues due to the Mavericks’ lack of healthy choices.

AD left Wednesday’s win over the Pacers early due to left leg soreness, and the injury will likely cost him at least one game. P.J. McCollum shot the ball well on Thursday, making five of his eight three-point attempts. Unfortunately, he did not provide much value outside the points and three-pointers. More important than that was McCollum getting untracked shooting-wise, as he’s making just 36.4 percent of his attempts from the field. That’s why he’s ranked outside the top-150 in nine-cat formats.

Two nights removed from putting up 23 shots in an overtime loss to the 76ers, Sarr only took 11 shots against the Thunder. While there was some foul trouble for the second-year center to navigate, the Wizards need to make a more concerted effort to get him the ball than they did on Thursday. Especially with Bilal Coulibaly returning from an offseason thumb injury on Thursday. Washington ends its week with a home game against the Magic on Saturday.

Coulibaly made his season debut on Thursday, and the time off impacted his playing time. The third-year wing only played 24 minutes against the Thunder, but he was productive when on the floor. Coulibaly’s return meant Bub Carrington came off the bench, and he finished with three points, four rebounds and one assist in 22 minutes. While Coulibaly’s rostered percentage (17 percent) will increase, Carrington’s (14 percent) may decrease due to the role change and his limited production.

After playing eight minutes or less in Dallas’ first three games, Powell picked up the dreaded DNP-CD in Monday’s loss to the Thunder. However, Powell’s name was called with Anthony Davis (leg) joining Dereck Lively II and Daniel Gafford on the sideline during the first quarter of Wednesday’s game. And the veteran answered, recording season-highs in points, rebounds and blocked shots. He only attempted six shots, but a 10-of-12 night at the foul line boosted Powell’s point total. There’s no need to add him, but that could change if the Mavericks are forced to play without Davis, Lively and Gafford.

Williams rejoined the Mavericks after missing two games for personal reasons and stepped up with his best performance of the season. He notched his fifth career 20-point game while chipping in on the boards with seven rebounds. His playing time was also notable, with Williams playing 22 minutes off the bench while D’Angelo Russell (14/2/5/1 with one three-pointer) logged 20. With the Mavericks currently without Dereck Lively II and Daniel Gafford, they’ve needed Washington to step up defensively and on the glass. He’s grabbed at least nine rebounds in three of his last four, including a season-high 11 on Wednesday. Also, the Mavericks lost Anthony Davis (leg) during the first quarter, impacting Washington’s role and value. While he’s ranked well outside the top-150 in nine-cat formats, that’s due to an average of 3.0 turnovers per game. After struggling mightily in Monday’s loss to the Thunder, Flagg was considerably better against the Pacers. Not only did he shoot over 50 percent from the field, but the first overall pick also recorded his second double-double. All that was missing from Flagg’s final stat line was a steal, and he did not attempt a three-pointer after going 0-of-3 on Monday. If Anthony Davis (leg) misses time after exiting Wednesday’s game during the first quarter, the Mavericks may put even more on Flagg’s plate offensively.

Davis played seven first-quarter minutes before exiting with a sore lower left leg. It’s unknown if this issue is connected to the bilateral Achilles tendinopathy he’s been dealing with, but the problem is severe enough to sideline AD for the rest of the night. George has been on a roll to begin the season, much to the delight of those who believed he could break out in fantasy basketball. Averaging 4.3 assists per game entering Tuesday, McCollum notched a season-high in that category against the 76ers. In 56 games for the Pelicans last season, the veteran guard recorded at least seven assists on eight occasions. Bub Carrington (10/5/5/1/1 with two three-pointers) runs the show, but McCollum has the ball in his hands plenty. Sarr was rolling to start Tuesday’s game, finishing the first half with 20 points and seven rebounds. While the second-year pivot finished with his first career 30-point double-double, the production tailed off after halftime. That’s the next step for Sarr: being consistently dominant. He held his own against the 76ers’ post players, including Joel Embiid. While the Wizards won’t be pleased with letting a double-digit lead slip away, they have to be encouraged by what Sarr did. Flagg got his welcome to the NBA moment against the defending champion Thunder as he missed eight of his nine shots from the floor and Dallas failed to break the century mark. The 18-year-old prodigy may not have a worse game over the remainder of his rookie season as his all-around game should enable him to contribute as a playmaker even when his shot isn’t falling. After playing 24 minutes in the Mavericks’ first two games, including nine in Friday’s loss to the Wizards, Russell figured more prominently in the rotation on Sunday. He took advantage of the opportunity, joining Anthony Davis and Cooper Flagg as the Mavericks’ 20-point scorers. With Kyrie Irving (knee) out, Russell is the best healthy point guard on the roster. While there’s a desire to have the ball in Flagg’s hands as a playmaker, that should not mean Russell gets bumped to the fringe of the rotation. Sunday’s effort should ensure he continues to play quality minutes after seeing limited time in the first two games.

After struggling in his first official NBA game, Flagg has looked more comfortable in his last two. Sunday’s outing was the best for the rookie, who shot over 50 percent from the field. What may have helped was that point guard D’Angelo Russell got more rotation minutes, which helped lighten the playmaking workload the Mavericks have asked Flagg to shoulder. Sarr’s 21 points were a season-high and he blocked three shots for the second consecutive game. The 20-year-old center shot just 39 percent from the field last year, but he’s 19-of-35 (54 percent) on field goal attempts so far this year. While Sarr made all six free throw attempts, he struggled with the physicality of the Pistons’ bigs, most notably starter Jalen Duren. That was sometimes an issue for the Wizards center during his rookie season, and it’s unsurprising given his build. What will help Sarr is being able to knock down perimeter shots. He made 30.8 percent of his three-point attempts as a rookie and shot 1-of-4 in two preseason games. McCollum looked good in his final action of the preseason, playing 24 minutes against the Pistons. He and fellow veteran Khris Middleton (3/4/4 in 24 minutes) are in an interesting spot. Under normal circumstances, both would have solid fantasy value as starters. However, with the Wizards rebuilding, it’s fair to wonder how long that will last, and if the team hopes to showcase McCollum and Middleton before the February trade deadline. Carrington exited Thursday’s preseason finale after playing four minutes. He landed awkwardly after attempting to deflect a pass. The good news is that the Wizards announced the second-year guard is dealing with a sore left knee rather than a more serious issue. Fantasy managers should not panic and push Carrington down their draft boards, unless the Wizards provide an update that proves more serious than the initial diagnosis.
