Russell has been third in the point guard pecking order for quite some time, so his absence from Thursday’s game will not affect fantasy basketball. Ryan Nembhard and Brandon Williams will handle the point guard role, with the player who has the “hot hand” seeing more action.

Russell has been splitting backup point guard minutes behind Brandon Williams, so there’s not much of a fantasy impact here. Ryan Nembhard would be the only backup if Russell sits, so that could make Nembhard useful in deeper fantasy formats, but he’d still likely be limited to about 25-28 minutes.

Williams continues to come off the bench, but for the second time in three games, he played more than starting point guard Ryan Nembhard. After logging 30 minutes on Christmas Day, Williams hit that number on Monday. And he started the third quarter in place of Nembhard, who went scoreless with two rebounds and six assists in 17 minutes. Williams’ fantasy value would be more appealing if he were the starter, but it has been challenging for many managers to make sense of the Mavericks’ point guard rotation.

While Flagg recorded a complete stat line in Portland, he struggled to provide consistent scoring. There were brief periods when he showed why he currently leads all rookies in scoring, but Flagg could not get untracked. And the shooting struggles may have led him to attempt only three shots in the fourth quarter, all misses. With Anthony Davis out due to a groin injury, there’s room for Flagg to be more assertive offensively, and the Mavericks need him to be. He’ll look to bounce back when the Mavericks host Philadelphia on Thursday.

Making a second straight start in place of the injured Anthony Davis, Gafford finished Monday’s defeat with one of his best stat lines of the season. In addition to recording his second double-double, the Mavericks’ center was responsible for four defensive contributions, his best output since December 20 against the 76ers. Gafford did take a quick trip to the locker room during Monday’s game, but the 26 minutes played were the most for him since November 24. Hopefully, Monday’s performance serves as a catalyst for a player who has offered 11th-round fantasy value this season.

Having scored 14 points in the first half of Monday’s game, Christie went scoreless in the third quarter, shooting 0-of-2 from the field. The Mavericks guard rebounded nicely in the fourth, scoring 11 points on 4-of-4 shooting to help Dallas claw its way back into the game. The 25 points were a season-high for Christie, who matched his previous high with five three-pointers. While starting gives him a higher fantasy ceiling, that’s likely to change once Anthony Davis is cleared to return from a groin injury.

Curry came alive in the second half, scoring 17 points in the final two quarters on 5-of-8 shooting, including 3-of-6 from downtown. Curry reached 39 points for the third time in seven contests since returning from a five-game absence back on December 12 and could’ve had an even bigger night in this one since he shot an uncharacteristic 36.4 percent (4-of-11) from three-point range. He made up for it by getting to the charity stripe for 11 free-throw attempts, his highest single-game total since November 12. The 37-year-old sharpshooter is averaging 28.9 points, 4.1 rebounds, 4.3 assists, 1.3 steals and 0.5 blocks through 23 games this season. For the second straight game, Nembhard was limited to 17 minutes. However, unlike Thursday, the Mavericks did not have Brandon Williams. With no Anthony Davis in the Mavericks’ lineup, there will be room for Washington to do a bit more offensively. On Saturday, he took as many shots as Cooper Flagg. With Anthony Davis (groin) out, there’s even more room for Flagg to exert his influence on the offensive end of the floor. That may have made Saturday’s performance somewhat disappointing for fantasy managers, even with the rookie scoring 23 points while shooting over 50 percent from the field. Flagg only attempted 13 shots on the day after putting up 21 in each of his two previous outings. That isn’t all on the rookie, of course, but there should not be games in which Max Christie (12 attempts) puts up almost as many shots as Flagg. After totaling 13 points on 4-of-12 shooting in Dallas’ Monday/Tuesday back-to-back, Williams rebounded with his best performances of the season. The 26 points were a season-high for the guard, who played 30 minutes off the bench. Starter Ryan Nembhard (four points, one rebound and two assists in 17 minutes) struggled, resulting in more playing time for Williams. Washington was back in the Mavericks’ lineup after sitting out Tuesday’s win over the Nuggets, and he made up for lost time with his fourth double-double of the season. All that his stat line was missing on Thursday was a three-pointer, a somewhat surprising development since he averages 1.5 per game on the season. The good news is that Marshall reached double figures for the tenth consecutive game. The bad is that the stat line was meager outside of points and rebounds. And the limited production is why Marshall is ranked just outside the top-100 over the last two weeks. If Anthony Davis (groin) misses time, the Mavericks are going to need even more from Marshall.
