Morant’s status hasn’t changed, but he was seen getting shots up at practice. Ty Jerome and Scotty Pippen Jr. will continue to fill the point guard minutes during the preseason, with Jerome as part of the starting unit.

Zach Edey and Jaren Jackson Jr. will be sidelined to start the 2025-26 season, which means Aldama should have plenty of opportunities to contribute early in the season. He’ll be a valuable rebounder who can hit three-pointers, find teammates and occasionally put up a strong scoring total.

Stewart, who missed the final five games of the Pistons’ first-round playoff series with the Knicks due to a knee injury, has started both of Detroit’s preseason games. Starter Jalen Duren has been out, so this is not a case of Beef Stew taking the lead in a competition for that role. Having failed to crack the top 100 in any of his first five seasons, the best-case scenario for Stewart would be to provide consistent late-round value. However, he isn’t a player who should be selected in standard league drafts.

Detroit was without Jaden Ivey and Tobias Harris on Thursday, so Holland and Duncan Robinson (7/3/3/1 with one three-pointer) moved into the starting lineup. Holland did play in all 82 games as a rookie, but he provided limited fantasy value in a reserve role. And with the Pistons being even deeper this season due to the additions of Robinson and Caris LeVert, and Ivey’s return from a fractured leg, Holland faces a challenging climb to achieve fantasy relevance in 2025-26.

Based on his performances in Detroit’s first two preseason games, Cunningham could be in for a massive 2025-26. Thursday night, he only needed 19 minutes to do his damage, playing efficiently as a scorer and playmaker for his teammates. Detroit did not have its full rotation in Milwaukee, as Jalen Duren, Jaden Ivey and Tobias Harris were all inactive. Yet that did not keep Cunningham from having another excellent outing. Turnovers have been an issue in the past, lowering his value in nine-cat formats. But managers competing in eight-cat leagues should not hesitate to select Cunningham with a first-round pick.

The Pistons have made two changes to the lineup that began the preseason opener against the Grizzlies. Holland and Robinson are in the starting lineup, filling the voids left by Jaden Ivey and Tobias Harris. While both will be in the rotation when the regular season begins, performing well during the preseason may improve their standing within the bench unit. Also of note is Stewart making a second straight start, as the Pistons remain without Jalen Duren.

With Kentavious Caldwell-Pope out, Coward moved into the starting lineup for his second preseason game. The rookie guard once again struggled from three, missing all five attempts. However, Coward was more aggressive off the dribble and was rewarded for his efforts with seven free throws. Given the amount of time missed and the shoulder injury that limited him to six games in his final college season, it’s unsurprising that the rookie has looked rusty. Most important for the Grizzlies is that Coward made strides between his first and second preseason games. He’ll have every opportunity to earn rotation minutes once the regular season begins.

Having provided limited offensive value in Monday’s Grizzlies’ preseason opener, Wells was considerably better against the Celtics. Even with a healthy Ja Morant in the lineup once the point guard is cleared to return from an ankle injury, Wells’ role offensively should expand due to Desmond Bane being traded to the Magic during the summer. The second-year wing looked better equipped to take on those responsibilities on Wednesday than two nights prior. The progress shown by Wells is encouraging, especially for a player whose value to his team exceeded his fantasy value last season.

Wells and Aldama are the only holdovers from the five who started Monday’s loss to the Pistons. Ty Jerome, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Jock Landale are out, with Small, Coward and Lovering filling the voids. Coward, the 11th overall pick in June’s draft, is the player to watch. He didn’t shoot the ball well on Monday, but that was his first game action since December due to a torn rotator cuff suffered during his final season at Washington State. Coward will be in the mix for rotation minutes this season and has value in dynasty leagues.

The Grizzlies announced on Monday that Ja Morant was week-to-week with a sprained ankle. It’s possible that Memphis will begin the regular season without its starting point guard. Scotty Pippen Jr. emerged as a valuable streaming option last season, and Jerome could do the same in 2025-26 due to Morant’s injury history. In his first preseason game since signing with Memphis in free agency, Jerome started and was productive as a scorer and playmaker in his 19 minutes. Pippen played 20 minutes off the bench, finishing with 13 points, two rebounds, three assists, one steal and one three-pointer. Whichever guard wins that competition during the preseason will be worth having, especially in deeper leagues. And if Morant is not ready for the regular season, both will have value, similar to Indiana’s guard tandem of Andrew Nembhard and T.J. McConnell.

While Jaren Jackson Jr. (toe) was cleared to begin ramping up his activity just before the start of training camp, he’s unlikely to be ready in time for the start of the season. Add Zach Edey’s offseason ankle surgery, and the coast appears clear for Aldama to provide increased value early on. He shared the team lead in rebounds with offseason addition Jock Landale (9/7/1/1/1 with two three-pointers) while finishing a block and a three-pointer shy of a complete stat line. Aldama is worth selecting with a late-round pick, as he’ll have value even after Jackson and Edey return.

Sent to Memphis as part of the Desmond Bane trade to Orlando, Caldwell-Pope should easily slot into the Grizzlies’ starting lineup. The question is whether he can bounce back from a rough 2024-25 season, which would give him a chance of offering deep-league value. Last season, Caldwell-Pope shot 34.2 percent from beyond the arc, his worst percentage since 2015-16 with the Pistons (30.9 percent). The Grizzlies must replace Bane’s shooting, and Caldwell-Pope will have every opportunity to step up. That can also be said for Jaylen Wells, who shot 3-of-8 from three on Monday and finished with nine points and three assists.

With Tim Hardaway Jr. in Denver and Malik Beasley no longer in the Pistons’ plans, Robinson was brought in via offseason trade due to Detroit’s need for perimeter shooting. While he did have his moments in Miami, a change of scenery may benefit the veteran sharpshooter. Robinson’s eight shot attempts were tops among Pistons reserves on Monday, with Caris LeVert (two points on 1-of-8 shooting and one assist) also hitting that number. Robinson will remain a specialist in deeper fantasy leagues, but he may have more consistent opportunities to produce in Detroit than he did in his final seasons with the Heat.

Less than a month after the Pistons’ 2024-25 campaign concluded, Pistons lead executive Trajan Langdon told Cunningham that he wanted the franchise cornerstone to be in “elite shape” this season. He looked sharp in Monday’s preseason opener, taking over in the second quarter to spearhead a 40-9 Pistons run. He’s receiving first-round attention in fantasy drafts and with good reason, as Cunningham played a career-high 70 games last season. As long as Cunningham stays healthy, he can provide top-10 fantasy value regardless of league format.

Monday’s exhibition may not have counted toward official records, but it was a big day for Ivey. The Pistons guard was on the floor in game action for the first time since New Year’s Day, when he suffered a fractured fibula during a game against the Magic. Unsurprisingly, Pistons head coach JB Bickerstaff did not push Ivey or any of the starters too far against the Grizzlies, but the playing time should increase as the regular season gets closer. Before his injury, Ivey shot a career-best 40.9 percent from beyond the arc. While the Pistons did add Duncan Robinson and Caris LeVert during the offseason, they’ll need Ivey to continue on that trajectory, especially with fellow starter Ausar Thompson (5/5/3/2/1) not being much of a perimeter shooter.

It was a left ankle injury for Morant, who joins a long list of injured Grizzlies. With the start of the regular season a little over two weeks away, Morant’s status for opening night is certainly in question, and it would be surprising if he played much, if at all, during the preseason. Ty Jerome and Scotty Pippen Jr. would occupy the point guard minutes in Morant’s absence.

He described Thompson as a “nightmare” with the ball in his hands, but it sounds like it was meant to be a positive description, even if that could sound negative. Thompson was spectacular in limited action last season and should take a big leap in year three. If they’re going to put an emphasis on getting him involved on offense, he could end up taking a step towards becoming an elite player in fantasy basketball.
