Booker rebounded in the second half, but had just two points and five turnovers in 19 minutes in the first half. The Suns trailed by eight at halftime and would go on to lose by nine, which was the closest margin of the series. For much of the series, Booker was stymied by the Thunder defense and it led to a quick exit for the Suns in these playoffs.

Holmgren was excellent in Game 4 with 24 points, 12 rebounds, two three-pointers and two steals. The 23-year-old center was +21 in 34 minutes as the Thunder took Game 4 by nine points. OKC won every game in the series by at least nine points. The Thunder are on the fast track to repeating as champions with a first round sweep of the Suns.

Gilgeous-Alexander put on a show again as he continued to dominate the Suns in this series. Over the last three games, the 27-year-old point guard 36.7 points and 8.3 assists while shooting 63.3 percent from the field. 41.7 percent from behind the three-point line and 90.6 percent from the free throw line. With the Thunder advancing, they’ll take on the winner of the Rockets and Lakers series.

Injured during the series opener, Goodwin did not play in Games 2 or 3. Collin Gillespie has moved into the starting lineup, and Grayson Allen’s return during Saturday’s Game 3 defeat gave the Suns additional depth on the perimeter. Goodwin is most impactful as a defender, giving Phoenix another option to throw at Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.

It has been a struggle for Booker offensively in this series, and the Thunder deserve credit for that. In Game 3, he didn’t have the best day shooting the basketball, but the seven assists were solid. And another concern came up during the third quarter, as Booker departed briefly after injuring his left ankle. He did return to the game, so there may not be any issue regarding Booker’s availability for Game 4 on Monday.

Green’s efficiency has improved by the game in this series, but the Suns still find themselves in a 0-3 hole. Amongst Suns players, only Dillon Brooks scored more points than Green in Game 3, and he was also effective as a playmaker for others with six assists and one turnover. If Phoenix is to send the series back to Oklahoma City for a Game 5, they’re going to need Green’s best effort of the season in Game 4 on Monday.

After an inefficient Game 1 performance, Brooks has produced consecutive 30-point games. In Game 3, the veteran wing shot a little over 50 percent from the field and led the Suns in field-goal attempts. With Devin Booker struggling and being the focal point of Oklahoma City’s defensive approach, there have been more opportunities for Brooks. While some may want him to tone down the aggressiveness as far as the shot selection is concerned, he’s been effective in back-to-back games.

Jalen Williams’ absence due to a strained hamstring did not result in more shot attempts for Holmgren in Game 3. In fact, his attempts were cut in half compared to Game 2 on Wednesday. The good news is that the 7-foot-1 forward/center provided three defensive contributions and seven rebounds in 29 minutes on the floor. The Thunder may not need much offense from Holmgren to close out the Suns, but the competition will get stronger as the team advances.

With no Jalen Williams, who’s week-to-week with a hamstring injury, Mitchell entered the Thunder starting lineup for Game 3. Unsurprisingly, the Suns were fine with the second-year guard getting up shots, and his 20 attempts led Oklahoma City. Mitchell did not shoot the ball well, making 25 percent of his attempts, but the Thunder had enough production from other players to compensate. Just as important was his not hesitating to take those shots, and Oklahoma City will want that to remain the case in Game 4 on Monday.

The Suns threw their best punch to begin Game 3, but it wasn’t enough to knock the reigning champs off their stride. And Gilgeous-Alexander, the reigning league MVP, had a lot to do with that. He made his first seven shot attempts and finished with a playoff career-high 42 points. Gilgeous-Alexander missed just three shots from the field on the day, and the Thunder are one win away from moving on to the second round. Game 4 is on Monday night.

Green struggled again with his shooting after an inefficient opening game. He missed 15 shots on Wednesday, and nearly tallied as many turnovers as he made field goals. Green is now shooting 14-of-39 from the field through two games in this series, which is a far different outcome compared to the 28-of-49 shooting and 71 points he tallied over the two Play-In Tournament games. Phoenix will likely need Green to get back on track offensively if it wants to get back in the series on Saturday.

It was tough for Booker to find scoring opportunities on Wednesday. He had only 10 shot attempts through the first three quarters against a Thunder defense that continues to guard him well. The low output left him as Phoenix’s second-leading scorer on the night with a points total that fell short of his regular-season average. Booker also had more turnovers than assists in Game 2 in his 40 minutes of game action. Brooks bounced back from a very inefficient 18-point performance in Game 1 by hitting the 30-point mark on above 50.0 percent shooting, leading to half of his scoring total. Williams got off to a blazing-hot start in Wednesday’s contest, scoring all 19 of his points in the first half, missing only one shot along the way; he scored it effectively both inside and outside the paint. Yet, his night ended prematurely after injuring his hamstring midway through the third quarter on a driving layup attempt. He exited the game at the next deadball, exited to the locker room, and never returned to the game. Williams was never officially ruled out, so perhaps that’s an encouraging sign ahead of Game 3. His status is certainly one to monitor over the coming days.

Holmgren anchored the middle defensively for the Thunder in a major way on Wednesday. The former second-overall pick repeatedly erased shots at the rim to account for two-thirds of his team’s total blocked shots, and had success at cleaning up the defensive glass. He scored in spurts on the offensive end to finish as one of OKC’s top scorers, with the three-point shot being a major factor. As he’s been effective on both ends of the floor, Holmgren is off to a strong start to begin the series. He’ll look to keep rolling in Game 3.

On the heels of winning the NBA’s Clutch Player of the Year award, SGA nearly put up 40 points on the eighth-seeded Suns. As usual, he was effective in the midrange, found production from beyond the arc, and was active at the charity stripe. Additionally, the reigning league MVP racked up several beautiful assists, enough to nearly notch a double-double, while also tying a team-high in steals. Holmgren came out hot in Game 1, scoring 13 points in the first quarter. He didn’t offer much production after that, but the Thunder really didn’t need much from him. Oklahoma City’s bigs were excellent defensively, with Isaiah Hartenstein (eight points, eight rebounds, two assists and two blocks) and Jaylin Williams (five points, four rebounds, two assists, four steals and one three-pointer) joining Holmgren in recording at least two “stocks.” Holmgren is one of the finalists for Defensive Player of the Year, joining San Antonio’s Victor Wembanyama and Detroit’s Ausar Thompson.

The Thunder began the postseason portion of their title defense with a 119-84 rout of the Suns, with the reigning league MVP leading the way. Gilgeous-Alexander didn’t shoot the ball well from the field, but his ability to apply pressure off the dribble and get to the foul line compensated for that. Green shot 2-of-7 from beyond the arc in Game 1, with the complete stat line being countered in an inefficient day of shooting the basketball. Given what he brings to the table defensively, Brooks earns a certain level of freedom on the offensive end of the floor. However, there’s no reason why he should lead the Suns in shot attempts when Devin Booker and Jalen Green are available. In Game 1, Brooks put up 22 shots, with Booker next in line with 17 attempts and Green finishing with 16. That’s something to keep an eye on moving forward, beginning with Wednesday’s Game 2.
