It looks to be just a routine night off for the 24-year-old infielder. Daniel Schneemann will slide over and cover the shortstop position in his absence while Angel Martinez will draw a start at second base and bat ninth against Tigers’ right-hander Reese Olson.

Clase worked a scoreless ninth inning to keep the game at 0-0 heading to extra innings. He returned for the 10th though, where Michael Busch advanced the extra runner to third on a ground out to start the frame and Matt Shaw followed with a sacrifice fly that walked it off for the Cubs. The 27-year-old right-hander now sits at 4-1 on the season with a 3.19 ERA, cringe-inducing 1.42 WHIP and a 38/10 K/BB ratio over 37 1/3 innings on the season while converting 18 of his first 21 save chances.

The 25-year-old southpaw walked three batters on the night while giving up a pair of singles. He needed 68 pitches (39 strikes) to record 10 outs though, which led to his early exit from the ballgame. Cantillo got 10 whiffs in the ballgame while posting a CSW of 26 percent. With no immediate end in sight to the Luis Ortiz saga, it’s possible that Cantillo could stick around to make another start for the Guardians next Tuesday against the Astros in Houston.

The Guardians needed to clear a spot on their active roster for some fresh arms that can cover multiple innings on Thursday and unfortunately Allard was the odd man out this time around. The 27-year-old left-hander posted a 2.55 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and a 16/8 K/BB ratio over 35 1/3 innings in 16 appearances with the Guardians. Given the overall lack of quality pitching depth around the league, he could attract interest on waivers.

Bichette is back in the lineup for the first time since he was diagnosed with knee discomfort and scratched from Monday’s game. The 27-year-old is back, but Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is not in the lineup Friday, so Toronto fans will have to wait a day to see their dynamic duo back together.

Story hadn’t had a four-hit game since Aug. 13, 2023. He’s 13-for-24 with two homers and 10 RBI in his last six games, raising his OPS to .697. He was at .591 on this day a month ago, and he hasn’t been over .700 since May 3. He’s also now 14-for-14 stealing bases. Byron Buxton, at 15-for-15, is the only other player with as many steals and zero failures.

It’s the 10th homer of the season for Betts, but the first time that he’s gone deep since June 8; a lengthy spell for a player of his quality. The 32-year-old scuffled for the majority of the last month as seen in a .633 OPS, but everyone is aware of how good Betts remains and what he’s capable of. It’s still nice to get a reminder from a player who is slashing a disappointing .246/.321/.383 over his first 79 games.
