    George Springer

    George Springer

    TOR • RF • #

George Springer is not in the lineup for the Blue Jays on Thursday against the Guardians.

Springer is on a five-game hitting streak, going 9-for-19 over that stretch, so he’s just getting a routine day off. Bo Bichette will slide to the designated hitter role with Ernie Clement at shortstop, Addison Barger at third base, and Jonatan Clase starting in left field.

    Recap

Kevin Gausman hurled eight innings of two-hit ball Thursday as the Blue Jays shut out the Guardians 6-0.

Some days you’re allowed to intentionally throw at hitters and some days you’re not. Fortunately for Gausman and the Blue Jays, no ejection came of Gausman’s obvious targeting of José Ramírez to begin the fourth today. That followed Vladimir Guerrero Jr. getting hit in the back arm by a 2-2 sinker in the third. Both hitters were forced from the game afterwards. At least Gausman didn’t gear up for the Ramírez pitch; it checked in at 95.0 mph. A couple of batters later, he actually hit 98.4 mph on a heater to Lane Thomas; which was four mph harder than his season average. Gausman wound up with 15 whiffs and six strikeouts today. The victory makes him 6-6 with a 4.21 ERA ahead of a showdown with the Yankees next week.

    Recap

Andrés Giménez made his first appearance at shortstop since 2022 after Vladimir Guerrero Jr. left Thursday’s game with an injury.

The Jays had Bo Bichette DHing today and Ernie Clement playing short, so their options were limited after Guerrero exited. Giménez, who was primarily a shortstop in the minors, had played second base exclusively since starting 13 games at short for the Guardians in 2022. He finished today’s game against his old team 0-for-4 with two strikeouts.

    Recap

Alejandro Kirk hit a pinch-hit two-run single in the Blue Jays’ win over the Guardians on Thursday.

Kirk came off the bench with the bases loaded, and he was credited with two RBI on his single while a third run scored on an error by Steven Kwan. Kirk is now slashing an excellent .313/.358/.433, and if not for the remarkable season from Cal Raleigh in Seattle, you could put him in the conversation for best fantasy catcher in the American League.

Yankees RHP prospect Cam Schlitter threw six shutout innings for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Wednesday.

Schlitter struck out nine while walking one and allowing just two hits. The 6'6" righty has been lights out in his four starts at Triple-A, posting a 1.69 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 33/8 K/BB ratio in 21 1/3 innings. There’s a chance the 24-year-old could push for innings with the Yankees at some point over the summer.

    Recap

Juan Soto went 2-for-4 with two solo home runs in a 7-3 win over the Braves on Wednesday.

Hitters get hot all the time. Not many hitters have ever gotten as hot as Soto has this month. He has 10 home runs and a .315/.485/.685 slash line through 23 games in June. Even more impressively, this multi-homer game was the 27th of Soto’s career. With it, he passed the legendary Jimmie Foxx for the most multi-home run games before turning 27 years old. Despite a “cold” start to the season, Soto now leads the Mets with 19 home runs and has an .898 OPS. In case there was any question about it, he’s back to being one of the few best hitters in the entire sport.

    Ronald Acuña Jr.

Ronald Acuña Jr. will compete in next month’s All-Star Home Run Derby at Truist Park in Atlanta.

Acuña made it official on Wednesday that he’ll compete in the star-studded event on his home turf at Truist Park after expressing interest earlier this month. The 27-year-old franchise cornerstone has been exceptional since making his season debut back on May 23, hitting .385/.496/.692 with nine homers through 29 games.
