Polanco has been dealing with left knee soreness and wasn’t even available to start at DH for three games at the end of June, but he must be feeling better now. This frees up Cal Raleigh to DH tonight. Usual second baseman Cole Young is out of the lineup for the first time since the aforementioned June 22 game.

The Mariners had Monday off, so they could have started Bryan Woo on four days’ rest tonight. Instead, they opted to protect Woo by having him make just one start this week, something that almost surely cost them in a 9-6 loss. Evans had been solid previously, but he fell to 3-3 with a 3.75 ERA after giving up two homers tonight. With the break coming up, there’s a good chance he’ll be optioned out tomorrow.

That makes it a great night, even if the 360-foot shot to left was only a homer in Yankee Stadium and it’s copy in Tampa. He did strike out in his other three at-bats, so he’s hitting .234/.278/.299 through 32 games as a major leaguer. He’s quite likely to become a quality regular in time, but his spot is one the Mariners do need to be thinking about upgrading from at the deadline.

The versatile 30-year-old led off the fourth inning with a 375-foot (99.6 mph EV) solo shot off of Slade Cecconi that gave the Tigers a 2-1 advantage. That would wind up being the extent of the scoring in the ballgame. McKinstry finished the night 1-for-4 and is now slashing a healthy .289/.361/.462 on the season with six homers, eight triples, 26 RBI and 10 stolen bases on the year.

Short receives the call to replace an injured Luis Guillorme (hamstring) on Houston’s bench ahead of Wednesday’s game against the Rockies at Coors Field. The 30-year-old infielder bounced around last year, getting into 42 games between the Mets, Red Sox and Braves.
