The versatile 30-year-old led off the fourth inning with a 375-foot (99.6 mph EV) solo shot off of Slade Cecconi that gave the Tigers a 2-1 advantage. That would wind up being the extent of the scoring in the ballgame. McKinstry finished the night 1-for-4 and is now slashing a healthy .289/.361/.462 on the season with six homers, eight triples, 26 RBI and 10 stolen bases on the year.

All three were pretty legitimate, too, though the third one should have been played better. Baddoo had just one triple in 64 games this season prior to last night. In case you’re curious, there have been four three-triple games in the majors since 2000, with Rafael Furcal (2002), Denard Span (2010), Yasiel Puig (2014) and Xavier Edwards (2024) pulling off the feat.

Olson exited with a one-run lead, only to watch the Rays score four times in the sixth. Maybe the Tigers could have stuck with Olson for a little longer, but he was at 84 pitches in his second start back from the IL. He hasn’t been allowed to throw more than 94 pitches in a start this year, though that obviously didn’t prevent him from hurting his finger in May. Olson finishes the first half 4-3 with a 2.95 ERA. Hopefully, the lack of wear on his arm will help him stay strong into September.

McKinstry will replace injured Astros shortstop Jeremy Peña on the junior circuit’s roster. The versatile 30-year-old has been a key component for the American League-leading Tigers during the first half, hitting .283/.357/.460 with 48 runs scored, seven homers, 27 RBI and 13 steals over 84 games. This will be his first career All-Star Game selection.

Polanco has been dealing with left knee soreness and wasn’t even available to start at DH for three games at the end of June, but he must be feeling better now. This frees up Cal Raleigh to DH tonight. Usual second baseman Cole Young is out of the lineup for the first time since the aforementioned June 22 game.

It’s nice to see some offensive life from Polanco, as he’s been about as hot and cold as any player in the sport this year. He blistered a homer off Seth Lugo to make it 1-0 Mariners in the fourth in his first three-hit game since April 27. Polanco certainly has offensive upside, but you have to take a lot of bitter with the better based on the last year and a half.

Short receives the call to replace an injured Luis Guillorme (hamstring) on Houston’s bench ahead of Wednesday’s game against the Rockies at Coors Field. The 30-year-old infielder bounced around last year, getting into 42 games between the Mets, Red Sox and Braves.
