The former White Sox’ right-hander had been pitching for the Algodoneros de Union Laguna in the Mexican League where he registered a stellar 0.66 ERA, 0.66 WHIP and a 13/0 K/BB ratio across 13 2/3 innings of work. He’ll provide extra bullpen depth in the upper minors for the Diamondbacks.

With that homer, Carroll is now up to 20 on the season. His most recent roundtripper came off Stephen Kolek and gave the Diamondbacks a 3-1 lead in the fifth inning. Carroll has been managing tightness in his hamstring, but it didn’t appear to affect him Friday.

Nelson gave up a run in the first on a sac fly, but that run was unearned because of an error on the throw by Alek Thomas. After that, the right-hander did give up some baserunners with six hits, but no one else crossed the plate while he struck out three and issued just one walk. Nelson now has an ERA of 4.14 on the season, and will look to build on this effort next week against the Blue Jays.

He’ll take a seat with left-hander Matthew Boyd getting the ball for the Cubs in this one. The 27-year-old is hitting just .214/.290/.321 with one homer, six RBI and a 24/8 K/BB ratio over 93 plate appearances since his return from the injured list. Jared Triolo will start in his place at first base and bat seventh for the Pirates on Saturday afternoon at Wrigley Field.
