In a game that featured a lot of scoring early, it really calmed down late. That being said, Ohtani put the bookends on a tough night for Royals’ rookie starter Noah Cameron with a lead-off home run and then a triple to chase him from the game in the fifth inning. Ohtani scalded those two batted balls 110.4 mph and 112.4 mph respectively in what was another excellent game for the slugger. While not stealing bases nearly as often compared to his historic 2024 season, Ohtani is currently on pace for just under 60 home runs with a 1.045 OPS while he builds himself up as a pitcher.

Scott really had his work cut out for him in this one. He loaded the bases with just one out after a sharp single by Maikel Garcia, walk to Vinnie Pasquantino, and bloop by Salvador Perez. Luckily for Scott, that bloop didn’t necessarily look like a hit off the bat, so Garcia could only advance to third base in this one run game. Then, Jac Caglianone rolled over a hanging slider to ground into a game-ending double play and let Scott wriggle out of this jam. While it looked like the returns of Kirby Yates and Michael Kopech could eat into Scott’s save opportunities, he got the Dodgers’ last five save opportunities and converted each.

This was yet another disappointing start by May. The Royals – who had scored four total runs through their last five games and been shutout twice in a row – jumped on him for four runs through two innings. He did manage to somewhat right the ship by getting through his last two innings unscathed, but this was supposed to be a smash-spot for him. He forced just six swings-and-misses and going back to his five starts in June, he has 15 walks and 17 strikeouts through 27 innings pitched. That’s simply not good enough to be viable in most leagues. He’ll have another golden opportunity to get right next time out against the White Sox.

Henderson’s home run was his ninth of the season. He hit a solo shot off position player Jose Caballero in the eighth inning with the game already well out of reach. Henderson isn’t having an incredible season after starting the year with a rib injury, but he’s still hitting .279 with a .797 OPS and 25 RBI on the year.

This game was never in doubt as the Pirates jumped out to an early 4-0 lead and never looked back. Reynolds put the icing on the cake with a three-run home run in the sixth inning and has been scalding hot of late. One of the biggest disappointments through the first half of the season, he may be quickly righting the ship with 10 hits – including four doubles and this home run – in his last five games. He’s approaching a .700 OPS for the first time all season and could have a big second half ahead of him.
