Detroit wants to avoid having Gipson-Long face a series of left-handed bats atop Cincinnati’s lineup, so Holton will work the opening frame before passing the baton during Sunday’s early-afternoon showdown at Comerica Park.

Tigers manager A.J. Hinch told reporters Vest was immediately lifted from Sunday’s contest when he experienced something in his pinky finger after uncorking a wild pitch. He added that the 30-year-old righty will undergo a battery of tests to determine the severity of the issue. There should be an update on his status ahead of Tuesday’s series opener against the Pirates. It’s unclear whether he’ll require a trip to the injured list yet. Any sort of extended absence would likely result in Tommy Kahnle taking over the ninth-inning duties for Detroit.

It doesn’t seem like a good sign that the Tigers had fellow left-handed hitter Colt Keith hit in Meadows’ place against a right-hander, but it’s understandable, given that Meadows is just 6-for-42 since coming off the injured list. The good news is that Meadows’ exit velocity numbers are actually better than usual; he came into the day a 92.3 mph average exit velocity, a .262 xBA and a .499 xSLG. His defense will help keep him in the lineup until his luck changes on offense.

Torres went hitless on Saturday, but sandwiched that game with two excellent offensive performances against the Reds. The 28-year-old second baseman hit two home runs on Friday and had a three-hit game on Sunday. Torres has been quite an addition to the Tigers lineup this year. He’s hitting .276 with a .796 OPS and 34 RBI on the year.
