The entire city of Toronto, and fantasy managers too, can exhale after Guerrero sat out Friday’s game after fouling a ball off his foot. The 26-year-old fantasy stalwart, who is back at DH and batting third on Saturday afternoon at the Rogers Centre, was named the starting first baseman for the American League in the upcoming All-Star Game earlier this week and will head to the Midsummer Classic for the fifth straight season.

In a tie game, the Jays had first and third with no outs in the 11th after no one could field Nathan Lukes’ sac bunt attempt. George Springer and Bo Bichette weren’t able to end it from there, but Barger singled past Nolan Schanuel with two outs to win the game. It was his second RBI single of the contest. He has nine RBI over the last four days, and he’s batting .294 with nine homers and 24 RBI in his last 32 games.

Scherzer’s troublesome right thumb becomes more of a factor the longer he pitches, so quick hooks like this are probably going to be the norm here. Scherzer allowed five hits, walked three and struck out four in the 72-pitch outing today. He’ll probably make his next start Friday against the A’s, unless maybe the Jays want to IL him through the All-Star break and hope that helps his thumb.

Piña gets the call to join Toronto’s bullpen with veteran Yimi García hitting the injured list with a sprained ankle. The 26-year-old righty, who made one relief appearance earlier this season for the Marlins, was acquired last week in a small trade. He’ll be making his Blue Jays debut when he gets into a game.

He also singled. He could have added to the Tigers’ margin for error in the ninth, but up with the bases loaded and one out, he grounded into a double play against Tim Herrin. The homer off Logan Allen was Torkelson’s third in five games this month and 20th overall.

Alonso had a two-run homer off Carlos Rodón in the fifth and then a three-run shot off Jayvien Sandridge that pretty much put the game away in the seventh. It’s his 24th career two-homer game and 12th with five RBI. He’s back up third in the majors with 73 RBI; both he and Eugenio Suárez are two behind Seiya Suzuki and one back of Cal Raleigh.

Hoskins told reporters that the thumb is “jammed” but not broken, so the 32-year-old will likely need to spend a few days while it’s difficult for him to grip a bat. While Hoskins is out, it seems likely Jake Bauers will be the starter at first base.
