    Sandy Alcantara

    Sandy Alcantara

    Recap

Sandy Alcantara was lifted after giving up six runs in two innings against the Phillies on Friday.

Alcantara gave up a two-run homer in the first and then a walk and three singles in a four-run second inning that included two wild pitches. His velocity was good, and if this was two years ago, he would have gotten a chance to stay in and bounce back. As is, the Marlins are being extra careful, not only because he’s returning from Tommy John but also because they want to trade him this summer. Alcantara’s next start will come Wednesday at home against the Reds.

    Recap

Eric Wagaman homered off Zack Wheeler to supply the Marlins’ only two runs Friday in a loss to the Phillies.

Wagaman was a nice surprise in the Angels system last season, but though they brought him up at the end of the year, the Halos didn’t completely buy into his progress and non-tendered him in November. The Marlins opted to give him a major league contract as a free agent, and he’s opened the year by hitting .260/.339/.440 with just eight strikeouts in 56 plate appearances. He’s the player they hoped Jonah Bride would be, and while his fantasy ceiling is capped by the lack of production around him, he could be of use in deeper formats.

Angels designated INF Nicky Lopez for assignment.

The Angels needed to clear a spot on their active roster for the return of Zach Neto on Friday and Lopez was unfortunately the odd man out this time around. There’s a chance that the veteran infielder could generate some interest on waivers from a team in need of quality infield depth.

Angels activated INF Zach Neto from the 10-day injured list.

The dynamic 24-year-old shortstop will make his highly-anticipated 2025 season debut on Friday night against the Giants where he’ll start at shortstop and bat seventh against right-hander Logan Webb, Fantasy managers who have been anxiously awaiting his return now get an unexpected boost for the weekend’s slate of games.

Dodgers selected the contract of OF Eddie Rosario from Triple-A Oklahoma City.

With Shohei Ohtani heading to the paternity list, Rosario will have an opportunity to show what he can do at the big league level for at least a couple of days. The 33-year-old had been hitting a blistering .339/.406/.542 with two homers, 12 RBI and three stolen bases through his first 14 games at Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Dodgers placed DH Shohei Ohtani on the paternity leave list.

The 30-year-old two-way superstar will be away from the Dodgers for a couple of days as he and his wife prepare to welcome their first child into the world. Eddie Rosario was recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City in a corresponding move and will help carry the load in Ohtani’s absence.

    Recap

Carson Kelly launched his fifth and sixth homers of the year to drive in five runs in the Cubs’ wild 13-11 win over the Diamondbacks on Friday.

The game was anything but wild for 6 1/2 innings, but after Corbin Burnes exited, the Cubs scored five times in the bottom of the seventh, giving them a 7-1 lead. The Diamondbacks responded with 10 in the top of the eighth, which included a grand slam from Eugenio Suárez and a three-run shot from Lourdes Gurriel Jr. However, the Diamondbacks were trying to avoid most of their top relievers today, and they let Bryce Jarvis and Joe Mantiply combine to give up six runs in the bottom of the eighth. Kelly, Kyle Tucker and Seiya Suzuki all homered in the frame. Ryan Pressly then calmly set Arizona down in the top of the ninth. Kelly is currently hitting an absurd .419/.578/1.097 in 45 plate appearances. Even though he debuted nine years ago in 2016, just these 11 games along have taken his career OPS from .681 to .701.

    Recap

Colin Rea yielded one run in 4 2/3 innings Friday in his start against the Diamondbacks.

Rea, still getting stretched back out after opening up as a reliever, fanned five in the 69-pitch outing. The Cubs have Monday and Thursday off next week, and they might have Javier Assad ready to return by the time they would need a fifth starter again. However, there’s also the possibility they could also keep Rea in the rotation and send Ben Brown to the pen or the minors to make room for Assad.

    Porter Hodge

    Recap

Porter Hodge was lit up for six runs while retiring two batters in the eighth inning Friday against the Diamondbacks.

Craig Counsell is glad the Cubs’ comeback will lead to fewer questions about his managing today. Hodge thought he was going to pitch the eighth in a close game, but then he sat back down after the Cubs scored five runs to take a 7-1 lead in the bottom of the seventh. Jordan Wicks, who was just called up today and has next-to-no relief experience, was brought in instead, but he gave up three straight singles and was pulled. Hodge entered, immediately gave up a grand slam and then got himself into another jam afterwards. He eventually surrendered a two-run double, and after he was lifted, Ethan Roberts gave up a three-run homer to Lourdes Gurriel Jr., producing a 10-run inning. Hodge’s ERA jumped from 2.00 to 7.45.

    Recap

Ryan Pressly was credited with a win, rather than a save, after pitching a scoreless ninth in a 13-11 game Friday against the Diamondbacks.

Ethan Roberts, who finished the eighth but retired just one batter and gave up a homer beforehand, was in line for the win after the Cubs went ahead in the bottom of the inning, but the official scorer had the leeway to award it to a more effective pitcher. The scorer still has some time to change his mind, but for now, Pressly has two wins and four saves on the season.

    Corbin Burnes

    Corbin Burnes

    ARI •

    Recap

Corbin Burnes hurled six innings of two-run ball Friday against the Cubs.

Three strikeouts, seven whiffs and a 21% CSW made for an effective yet rather uninspiring effort from Burnes. Normally one of the game’s best at limiting hard contact, Burnes’ exit velocity numbers look like something one would see from Juan Soto in the batter’s box. He currently has a 50% hard-hit rate. His worst mark in the last five year was 34%. At least today was better in that regard, with only eight of 20 balls in play being hard hit. Burnes’ velocity remains strong, and we’d expect him to get back to being a top pitcher at some point in the coming months. He just isn’t one right now.

    Ryne Nelson

    Ryne Nelson

    Recap

Ryne Nelson gave up five runs in two-thirds of an inning of relief Friday against the Cubs.

Arizona was dealing with a short pen today, and the team was probably looking for Nelson to go multiple innings after entering down 2-1. Instead, he threw 36 pitches and got two outs before being replaced by Bryce Jarvis. There’s a good chance he’ll be sent down in exchange for a fresh arm after this, but that might be best for everyone; Nelson, who entered with a 4.50 ERA in 10 innings out of the pen, is going to be needed as a starter at some point, and the Diamondbacks should have him stretched out when it happens.

    Recap

Ian Happ went 3-for-5 and hit a grand slam against the Diamondbacks on Friday.

The slam was just Happ’s second homer in 22 games this season. He has six hits the last two days, raising his average from .209 to .253, and he’s now up to 17 runs scored in 22 games as the Cubs’ leadoff man.

    Recap

Eugenio Suárez hit his seventh career grand slam Friday against the Cubs.

Suárez’s slam off Porter Hodge started the scoring in a 10-run eighth inning for Arizona. It was his first homer since Apr. 1, when he finished a stretch that saw him hit five in his first five games. He was hitless over the rest of the contest, and his average is sitting at .153 at the moment. He has six homers, three doubles and two singles in 72 at-bats.

    Caleb Durbin

Brewers’ manager Pat Murphy told reporters on Friday that Caleb Durbin will function as the team’s regular third baseman for the foreseeable future.

That had been the expectation, but it’s nice to hear Murphy actually spell it out. The 25-year-old infielder had been hitting .278/.316/.482 with a pair of homers and three stolen bases at Triple-A Nashville. Given his speed and the Brewers’ aggressiveness on the basepaths, it’s very possible that Durbin becomes a useful middle infield option from a fantasy perspective.

Twins designated RHP Matt Canterino for assignment.

With Luke Keaschall getting promoted to the 40-man roster on Friday someone needed to get the boot and it looks like Canterino drew the short straw this time around. The 27-year-old hurler underwent season-ending shoulder surgery last month and hasn’t thrown a pitch in affiliated ball since the 2022 season. It’s likely that he passed through waivers unclaimed and continues to rehab in the Twins’ organization.

Twins optioned C/INF Mickey Gasper to Triple-A St. Paul.

The Twins needed to free up a spot on their active roster for the arrival of Luke Keaschall on Friday and Gasper was the odd man out. The 29-year-old went just 2-for-18 (.111) with a 7/4 K/BB ratio in 10 games with the big league club.

Twins selected the contract of INF Luke Keaschall from Triple-A St. Paul.

As anticipated Keaschall joins the Twins ahead of Friday night’s contest against the Braves. He’ll start at second base and bat eighth against right-hander Bryce Elder. The 22-year-old had been off to a nice start at St. Paul, slashing .261/.379/.348 with one home run, five RBI, four stolen bases and an 11/9 K/BB ratio over his first 58 plate appearances. Mickey Gasper was optioned to Triple-A St. Paul in a corresponding move.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. received a one-game suspension and has been fined an undisclosed amount relating to his conduct following his ejection from Thursday night’s ballgame.

The 27-year-old infielder was ejected on Thursday for arguing balls and strikes and then immediately jumped on social media in the locker room to continue his criticism of the home plate umpire. He is appealing the suspension — and will be in the Yankees’ lineup on Friday — while he awaits the results of that appeal.

Red Sox’ manager Alex Cora told reporters on Friday that Connor Wong (finger) could be ready to rejoin the team in two-and-a-half weeks.

Cora noted that Wong hasn’t done much catching yet, but he has been hitting off of a tee and progressing well in his recovery. It sounds like he shouldn’t require an extended minor league rehab assignment, so fantasy managers should have Wong back in their lineups at some point in early May.

    Injury

Austin Wells (illness) is not in the Yankees’ lineup for a second consecutive day on Friday due to food poisoning.

Yankees’ skipper Aaron Boone had said that Thursday’s absence was a scheduled day off and not related. The expectation is that he’ll be feeling better and should be able to return to the Yankees’ lineup in a day or two. J.C. Escarra will draw another start behind the plate and will bat sixth against Drew Rasmussen and the Rays on Friday night.

Daulton Varsho (shoulder) will begin a minor league rehab assignment at High-A Dunedin over the weekend.

The 28-year-old slugger will play a couple of games at that level before moving his rehab assignment to Triple-A Buffalo. The expectation is that he’ll play around five games there before rejoining the Blue Jays. It sounds like most of next week will be spent on the rehab assignment with a return to the big league club coming the following week against the Yankees.

Erik Swanson (elbow) is scheduled to throw a simulated game on Saturday.

It’ll be the first time that Swanson appears in a live game situation since landing on the injured list at the end of spring training. If all goes well with that session, he’ll be cleared to begin a minor league rehab assignment. The 31-year-old hurler will make four or five appearances on his rehab assignment before he’s deemed ready to rejoin the Blue Jays’ bullpen.

Blue Jays’ right-hander Max Scherzer received another cortisone injection in his injured thumb this week.

The 40-year-old hurler will be shut down for a few days while the injection takes effect. The expectation is that he will be able to resume throwing on Monday or Tuesday while the team is in Houston. Fantasy managers who are holding out hope for a quick return are going to have to wait at least another couple of weeks to see where he stands.

Josh Smith (thumb) remains out of the Rangers’ starting lineup for Friday night’s showdown against the Dodgers.

It’ll be the third straight game that Smith has missed due to a lingering thumb injury. The encouraging news is that he hasn’t been placed on the injured list, so it sounds like the Rangers think he’s getting closer to a return. Dustin Harris will start in left field once more and will bat fifth against Yoshinobu Yamamoto and the Dodgers on Friday evening in Arlington.
