He then smacked a two-run double in the fifth inning that pulled the Astros to within three runs at 6-3. He also had a sac fly. It was a particularly good day for Altuve, who missed out on an All-Star nod in favor or Brandon Lowe at second base and no longer has to try to come up with an excuse for getting out of going to Atlanta. He’s batting .272/.332/.457.

Altuve was also caught stealing for the sixth time, if you’re looking for a negative. His two homers were among the five that Houston hit in the shellacking, and he also doubled. In addition, he drew two walks while scoring a total of four runs. Probably best to not focus on that caught stealing, in our humble estimation. Altuve is now slashing .269/.331/.443 with 15 homers and 44 RBI following the 14th multi-homer performance of his career.

He went 0-for-1 with a walk before leaving. It’s worth noting that Altuve’s exit comes in a game where Houston is trailing by five runs, so there’s at least a chance this is precautionary. He’ll likely undergo some testing before Sunday’s finale, but it seems likely that the 35-year-old will be out of that lineup for at least that game. Brendan Rodgers has taken over at second base.

Altuve hit second behind Jeremy Peña again — with Peña going 2-for-4 and scoring a pair of runs in the contest — and it went well for the 34-year-old. He socked a two-run blast off Jack Flaherty that gave the Astros a 4-3 lead in the sixth, and he picked up his third RBI of the day with a fielder’s choice in the seventh. Altuve is now hitting .282/.316/.409 on the season, and while that’s a far cry from his best campaigns, it’s also far from unuseable as well.
