Abreu had started each of his team’s first three games since returning from the injured list, so they’ll give him a breather as they ease him back into full-time action. Rob Refsnyder will start in his place in right field and will bat eighth for the Red Sox against Louis Varland and the Blue Jays.

The Red Sox used Masataka Yoshida in right field on Sunday, but order is restored now. Abreu is batting eighth tonight after striking out all four times up on Sunday.

The Red Sox had been hopeful that Abreu would be able to return earlier in the week, but they also wanted to make sure that he was feeling 100 percent and didn’t want to rush him back into action prematurely. Ali Sanchez was designated for assignment in a corresponding move to clear a spot on the team’s active roster.

There’s still hope that he could return for Sunday’s series finale, but it’s more likely that he’s activated for the Red Sox’ upcoming series against the Blue Jays in Toronto that starts on Tuesday.

He’s slated to work out at Fenway tomorrow morning. Abreu still seems to be nearing a return from his calf strain, but that’s been the case for several days now and it obviously hasn’t happened.

Cora called it “another big step” for Abreu in his recovery from a right calf strain. The 26-year-old outfielder is expected to return at some point next week, though an exact date has yet to be determined.

Cora indicated that Abreu could return for the club’s mid-week series against the Athletics or next weekend when they square off against the Rays. The 26-year-old right fielder progressed to running at close to full strength on Friday and appears close to making it back to Boston’s lineup for the home stretch.

Abreu’s injury was downplayed from the moment it happened, but it’s clearly worse than anyone has wanted to let on. He’d seem to be droppable in mixed leagues.

Cora added that Abreu, who is working his way back from a calf strain, hasn’t been able to resume running but has progressed to hitting and defensive drills. There isn’t a firm timetable for the power-hitting corner outfielder to make it back to Boston, but he should return at some point by mid-September, barring an unexpected setback.

Cora noted that the 26-year-old outfielder is still having issues sprinting, which is a hurdle that he’ll have to clear before being activated from the injured list. Fantasy managers shouldn’t expect him back until next weekend at the earliest.

Abreu is going to need more time than initially anticipated as he works his way back from a calf strain. It’s unclear how the roster will shake out with Rob Refsnyder (oblique) set to return from the injured list on Thursday. The obvious move involves jettisoning top prospect Jhostynxon Garcia back to the minors, but that’s the least exciting one for fantasy purposes.

It’s unclear what Abreu’s likely speedy recovery from a right calf strain will mean for top prospect Jhostynxon Garcia, but there’s a chance he sticks around with rosters expanding at the outset of September. If there’s a big takeaway from the roster crunch it’s that the Red Sox can afford to deal away at least one of their outfield options this upcoming offseason.

The 26-year-old slugger hasn’t played since sustaining the injury on Sunday. Top prospect Jhostynxon Garcia was promoted from Triple-A Worcester to take his place on the Red Sox’ active roster. Abreu has not had an MRI exam on his calf, so the extent of his injury remains to be seen.

Abreu is headed to the injured list with a right calf issue, but the move isn’t official yet since top prospect Jhostynxon Garcia is still en route to New York. It’ll be Jarren Duran, Ceddanne Rafaela and Roman Anthony in the outfield on Thursday night.

Abreu will sit out his second straight contest after leaving Sunday’s series finale against the Marlins with right calf tightness. There’s still a possibility that he’ll require a trip to the injured list, but that hasn’t happened yet. It’ll be Roman Anthony in right field once again on Tuesday night.

Red Sox manager Alex Cora told reporters Abreu is feeling better and remains day-to-day for now. He also added that the 26-year-old corner outfielder isn’t out of the woods yet and didn’t rule out the possibility of a trip to the injured list. It’ll be rookie sensation Roman Anthony taking over in right field in his absence.

Abreu was pulled from Sunday’s game against the Marlins after his calf cramped up on him on his first step toward home plate as he scored from third base on a sacrifice fly. It sounds like fantasy managers have dodged a bullet here and that Abreu shouldn’t be forced to miss any time.

No surprise here with temperatures nearing 90 degrees and extreme humidity impacting Sunday afternoon’s showdown at Fenway Park. Abreu finished 2-for-3 with a two-run homer that deflected off the glove of Marlins right fielder Dane Meyers and went over the right-field wall for his 22nd big fly of the season.

With the Red Sox down 1-0 in the top of the seventh and a man on first, Abreu tried to bunt (ideally for a hit, but at least a sacrifice if not) on the first pitch of his at-bat against Ryan Pressly. Fortunately, he failed, and he hit the next pitch 406 feet to right field. The Red Sox then got a three-run homer in the eighth to seemingly put the game away, but Abreu wasn’t done, adding a solo shot off Ethan Roberts. That made him the 21st player to reach 20 homers this season. Considering he’s a platoon player who served a brief IL stint last month, that’s pretty impressive.

The Red Sox sat Abreu against southpaws each of the last two days, but they weren’t willing to make it three in a row. Marcelo Mayer, on the other hand, has no such luck, as he’s sitting behind Nate Eaton for a third straight day.

Abreu heads to the bench with top prospect Roman Anthony getting the opportunity to face Nationals lefty Shinnosuke Ogasawara in the southpaw’s big-league debut. It’s notable that Marcelo Mayer is also on the bench in this one with Nate Eaton getting another chance at the hot corner and leading off for the second straight contest.

After his big hit, Abreu came around to score on a near homer-turned-double from Trevor Story. Both of Abreu’s hits came after play resumed today. He’s 6-for-16 with three homers, a double and 10 RBI in his last four games.

Abreu thought the inside-the-parker was gone, and projected at 423 feet, it would have been in 29 ballparks. However, the triangle in right-center in Fenway barely held it. Fortunately for Abreu, TJ Friedl fell down after the ball rebounded off the wall, and Abreu was able to motor his way around the bases in spite of the delayed start. The slam was conventional, traveling 407 feet to right. In spite of a down stretch and an IL stint, he’s up to 16 homers in 74 games on the year. He had 15 in 132 games as a rookie last season.

In Major League Baseball in 2025, teams only ever score one or no runs or so many that the contest concludes with a position player pitching. Abreu’s nice game came without a hard-hit ball; his 357-foot homer down the right field line left his bat at 94.1 mph. It was Abreu’s first homer in 18 games, dating back to before his short IL stint.

Abreu is back after missing just a little over the minimum 10-day stint with his left oblique strain. The outfielder takes Kristian Campbell’s roster spot, and should be in the lineup everyday against right-handed pitchers.

Abreu started as the designated hitter, so he will likely need to play at least one full game in the field before the Red Sox think about bringing him back up. Of course, there is an opening at designated hitter now, but Boston figures to use Masataka Yoshida (shoulder) there, so there is still a bit of a logjam that needs to be cleared.

Abreu is eligible to return Thursday, and it looks like he’ll be ready then. With Rafael Devers gone, the Red Sox will likely give Roman Anthony a lot of DH time, with Jarren Duran also occasionally occupying the spot. Abreu will resume his platoon with Rob Refsnyder.
