Barger was eligible to return from the 10-day IL today, but he’s obviously going to need at least another week. He’s not expected to start running until next Tuesday or Wednesday.

Barger winds up requiring a trip to the injured list to allow for some extra recovery time and enable Toronto to bring up some bench depth. The 26-year-old was one of last year’s biggest breakthroughs fantasy-wise, but he was off to a slow start this season before suffering an ankle injury over the weekend when he stepped awkwardly on first base. It’ll likely be a minimum stay on the injured list for Barger, who should be ready to return at some point next week.

Barger, 26, is dealing with bilateral ankle discomfort, and the 26-year-old will miss a second-straight start while recovering. Nathan Lukes is starting in right field while Barger — who is considered day-to-day — sits.

Blue Jays manager John Schneider told reporters they’re going to wait as long as possible before Monday’s series opener against the Dodgers before determining whether Barger will require a trip to the injured list. The 26-year-old is dealing with a relatively minor ankle issue after awkwardly crossing first base on Sunday but could still wind up needing some additional time off. He’s best left on the bench for fantasy purposes outside of extremely deep mixed leagues and AL-only formats out of an abundance of caution.

Barger exited Sunday’s contest with bilateral ankle discomfort, but Schneider suggested that the departure was precautionary. The manager said he hurt both ankles on an early play, and suggested he would just be down for a day or two. If Barger can’t go Monday against the Dodgers, Jesús Sánchez likely gets the start in his absence.

Barger was replaced by Jesús Sánchez. The 26-year-old outfielder will assuredly undergo testing to determine the severity of the injury, and his status should be updated shortly.

It’s surprising to see Barger out of the lineup with a right-handed starter on the mound for Colorado in Ryan Feltner. The 26-year-old power-hitting corner outfielder has gone hitless in 12 at-bats over four contests to open the season. It’ll be light-hitting Nathan Lukes taking over in right field.

It’s not uncommon for managers to try to get their bench players into the lineup at least once in the early stages of the season, which is presumably why Straw will get a shot to face Athletics lefty Jeffrey Springs in this one. Barger sat occasionally against southpaws last year and that figures to be the arrangement against this season with both Straw and Davis Schneider, who is in left field in place of Nathan Lukes on Saturday afternoon, on the bench as platoon options in right field.

Barger opened the scoring in the contest with a 410-foot (107.1 mph EV) solo shot off of left-hander Bryan Sammons in the second inning. He then added to that lead with a two-run double in the third. For the spring, the 26-year-old is now hitting .273 (6-for-22) with a pair of homers and 10 RBI.

His slam off Patrick Halligan was projected at 399 feet. Barger was in the cleanup spot today. He’ll likely open up hitting either second, fourth or fifth against righties; presumably either he or Daulton Varsho will bat between George Springer and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. at the top and then it’s a matter of whether the Jays would prefer Alejandro Kirk fourth or fifth. Barger also now stands a better chance of playing against lefties with Anthony Santander down. Davis Schneider will almost certainly platoon with Jesús Sánchez in left, and then the Jays can pick their spots on whether Myles Straw should start over Barger against certain lefties.

The Blue Jays entered the bottom of the sixth tied at 2-2 with the Dodgers, and exited it up by nine runs. Four of those came on one swing of the bat, as Barger clobbered a grand salami off Anthony Banda to extend the lead to 9-2. Barger has had his issues in this postseason, but he appears to be figuring it out with homers in two of his last three playoff games. The Blue Jays now lead 1-0 in the series, and will look to extend that lead to 2-0 with Kevin Gausman squaring off against Yoshinobu Yamamoto on Saturday.

Barger’s second homer of the series gave the Blue Jays a 4-0 lead in the fourth, and the game never really got close afterwards. Barger, who was dropped from fourth to seventh in the Toronto lineup in Game 3 against the Mariners, is now at .281/.361/.531 in October. Game 7 of the ALCS will be played Monday, with George Kirby and Shane Bieber expected to start. The Jays prevailed 13-4 when those two previously matched up in Game 3.

Barger crushed a two-run shot in the seventh to give Toronto a 10-4 lead. The 25-year-old had some significant ups and downs in 2025, but the season should be considered a success with a .756 OPS, 21 homers and 74 RBI.

Barger got the start at third base and put the Blue Jays on the board with a solo blast off Tomoyuki Sugano to lead off the fifth inning. Barger later drew a walk in the seventh. The 25-year-old is hitting .251/.308/.471 with 20 homers and 68 RBI across 453 plate appearances.

The sac fly on a liner to right was initially an RBI single, but it was correctly changed to an error against Jesús Sánchez, who had the ball go off his glove. Barger has been struggling some of late, but he hasn’t had to worry about playing time with Bo Bichette on the IL; he’s started all three games at third base this week, with Ernie Clement sliding over to shortstop.

The Jays only have two experienced first basemen on the roster, so with Vladimir Guerrero Jr. limited to DH duties, someone needs to sit to make room for Ty France. It’ll be Daulton Varsho getting the night off tonight, as the Jays go with a George Springer-Nathan Lukes-Barger outfield.

Barger, who is hitting .500 (6-for-12) with one homer in three games since the All-Star break, takes a seat with lefty Carlos Rodón taking the hill for New York on Monday night at the Rogers Centre. The 25-year-old rookie figures to continue sitting against tough southpaws, but he’s earned an everyday role for Toronto with his stellar performance this year. It’ll be Joey Loperfido in right field on Monday evening in his place.

Barger’s home run was a 407-foot shot that capped off a four-run fifth inning to take the lead. It was his 14th home run on the season to go along with 42 RBI and a .272/.325/.521 slash line in 75 games. The 25-year-old has certainly played his way into the long-term plans for the Blue Jays.

The double probably ought to have been a fourth single, but neither Jung-Hoo Lee nor Luis Matos played the liner to right-center very enthusiastically and it wound up going to the wall. Barger’s hits ranged from 98 to 108 mph. His average is sitting at .273, a massive improvement over last year’s mark of .197 in 225 plate appearances.

Barger victimized A’s left-hander Jeffrey Springs for a 448-foot (107.8 mph EV) two-run shot with two outs in the seventh inning, pulling the Jays to within three runs at 6-3. That would be his only hit on the afternoon. The versatile 25-year-old did a nice job in the first half of the season, hitting .261/.317/.506 with 13 homers and 40 RBI in 266 plate appearances.

In a tie game, the Jays had first and third with no outs in the 11th after no one could field Nathan Lukes’ sac bunt attempt. George Springer and Bo Bichette weren’t able to end it from there, but Barger singled past Nolan Schanuel with two outs to win the game. It was his second RBI single of the contest. He has nine RBI over the last four days, and he’s batting .294 with nine homers and 24 RBI in his last 32 games.

Barger’s line drive homer tonight left his bat at 108.2 mph and traveled 401 feet, but his first double might actually have been more impressive; it was an opposite field shot at 104.9 mph and 383 feet. It would have been a homer in seven ballparks, according to Statcast. There are only a handful of major leaguers consistently hitting the ball as hard as Barger right now. He doesn’t always make contact, but there’s enough here to think he’ll last as a fantasy contributor.

The Jays scored seven runs in the first and led 8-0 after four, only to watch the Yankees come all of the way back and tie the game at 9-9 in the top of the eighth. Barger’s fourth RBI came as part of a two-run bottom of the eighth in which the go-ahead run scored on a wild pitch. Barger now has 10 homers and an .818 OPS in 229 plate appearances this season. He had seven homers and a .601 OPS in 225 plate appearances as a rookie last year.

Barger and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. went back-to-back off Walker Buehler in the first. It was Barger’s lone hit, but he did total three hard-hit balls to go along with a strikeout. He’s batting .250/.300/.512 with five homers in June. It’s not quite as good as his May, but it definitely ought to keep him in the lineup.

It’s notable that Barger is sitting out Tuesday’s series opener with lefty Logan Allen toeing the rubber for Cleveland after missing time over the weekend with right hip discomfort. It sounds like purely a matchup-related decision to go with Ernie Clement at first base, but it’s a situation fantasy managers should keep a close eye on.

It’s an extremely encouraging development for the Blue Jays and fantasy managers that Barger isn’t facing an extensive absence after being scratched from Saturday’s lineup with right hip discomfort. The 25-year-old breakout slugger presumably checked out fine after additional evaluation and testing since he’s back in Toronto’s lineup at third base and batting second for Sunday’s series finale.
