Friedl’s double would have scored Matt McLain in addition to Ke’Bryan Hayes and tied the game if it hadn’t gotten wedged in the padding in the right field wall. Fortunately, Noelvi Marte came through afterwards, plating the tying and winning runs with a single through the drawn-in infield. Friedl slumped for much of August, but he now has five hits and three RBI the last two days.

Freidl got just enough of a pretty good slider from Caleb Thielbar, driving in to shallow center at 71 mph for a single as part of a two-out rally. He’s 3-for-8 in two games since returning from paternity leave over the weekend.

Technically, Friedl will serve as Cincinnati’s 27th man for Saturday’s showdown against Atlanta at Bristol Motor Speedway in Tennessee, which enables the club to avoid having to option another player. The 29-year-old has been away since Tuesday on paternity leave.

It sounds like just a one-day thing, but since a player can only spend three days on the paternity list and Friedl wasn’t going to be available today, a move needed to be made. Once Friedl is activated, Connor Joe figures to lose his spot.

Friedl’s home run was his 10th of the year. The 29-year-old outfielder hit a two-run shot off Zack Littell in the sixth inning. Friedl isn’t quite matching his production from his breakout season in 2023, but is still a useful fantasy asset. He’s hitting .267 with a .762 OPS and 35 RBI on the season.

Friedl laced a 101.4 mph shot off of Austin Gomber 385 feet for his ninth home run of the season. The 29-year-old has proven himself to be a useful fantasy asset as the Reds’ lead-off hitter whenever he’s healthy, and his .276/.368/.406 slash line this season is continuing that.

Friedl’s knock finished the scoring for the night. Thanks in large part to their eight walks, the Reds won despite being outhomered 2-0 and outhit 8-5. Friedl’s double was his lone hit in five at-bats. At .288/.381/.439 with eight homers to date, he’s starting to receive some All-Star chatter. However, the NL outfield is extremely stacked (Corbin Carroll, Kyle Tucker, Juan Soto, Fernando Tatis Jr., Pete Crow-Armstrong, James Wood, Ronald Acuña Jr. and we could keep going) and it’ll probably take a couple of people dropping out to get Friedl in the mix.

Friedl has been productive in recent weeks, but not in ways that led to a ton of fantasy value; the homer today was his first since May 7 and the steal was his first since May 6. Still, he’s currently working on a streak of seven straight multihit games, raising his average to .306. It’s the longest such streak anyone has had this season.

The Reds scored 10 runs in the first and then held on for dear life as the Astros did their best to come back. The five times on base raised Friedl’s OBP to .360, and he’s scored 23 runs in 38 games. He’ll be a fine choice in mixed leagues next week with the Reds home for six games against the White Sox and Guardians.

This was the ‘TJ Friedl’ show as he opened the game by homering off a hanging curveball from Grant Holmes in a game the Reds would never trail. He took Holmes deep again in his next at-bat and this was his first multi-home run game since August 14th of last season. While his tools will never jump off the page, he’s still hitting lead-off nearly every day for the Reds.

Friedl has eight hits in his last three games, raising his average from .238 to .307. He’ll be a decent option as an outfield fill-in next week, what with the Reds playing in Miami and the against the Rockies in Coors.

Friedl scored the first run of the game on an RBI single by Santiago Espinal and then later knocked in another run on a groundout. The 29-year-old is the everyday lead-off hitter for the Reds and has enough speed to be an interesting outfield option in deeper formats.
