Holmes was outstanding in his final regular season start, shutting out the Marlins over six innings. He allowed just one hit and walked three batters while collecting two strikeouts. The 32-year-old right-hander ends the regular season with a 3.53 ERA, 1.30 WHIP, and a 129/66 K/BB ratio across 165 2/3 innings.

Both Sean Manaea and Holmes allowed four hits, walked none and struck out three today. Manaea, though, allowed three of his hits in a row and the third was a 374-foot homer from Nasim Nuñez. Funny enough, the longest fly Holmes allowed was also to Nuñez, but that 379-footer was an out. We’re guessing Holmes will start over Manaea next week against the Marlins, but things could be very much up in the air, based on whether or not the Mets need to win those games or not.

It was known that Holmes and Sean Manaea would be working in tandem tonight, but it was still fairly surprising to see the Mets pull Holmes with an 8-2 lead after four innings, denying him his 12th win of the year. Holmes did allow two homers, but that was the only damage, and he was at just 53 pitches through four. Holmes figures to pitch again Sunday against the Nationals, though it’s possible he could relieve Manaea then.

Holmes endured a painful, 29-pitch first inning that included two hit batsmen and two hits which led to two runs. He seemed to settle in over the next few innings, but was finally pulled after he gave up two hits to begin the fifth and that inherited runner would come around to score. This feels like a clear case where Holmes has run out of gas, eclipsing 150 innings in his first full season as a starter when his previous career-high was just 70. He had just a 2.99 ERA on July 4th and that’s climbed to a 3.75 ERA after this start. Still respectable, just not someone who we should consider trusting in our lineups at this point in the season. Holmes has a tough start against the Padres up next.

In a 1-1 game with one on and two outs, Holmes was left in to face Kerry Carpenter with a lefty ready in the pen in the fifth. Carpenter walked, Gregory Soto was brought in to face Riley Greene and a two-run single followed. It was an odd sequence from manager Carlos Mendoza made worse later when Carpenter, who might have been lifted for a pinch-hitter had the Mets gone to the lefty, hit a three-run homer off Ryan Helsley to put away the game in the eighth. Holmes took the loss, leaving him 11-7 with a 3.61 ERA through 28 starts. He’ll face the Phillies next week.

Holmes punched out two batters on the night while allowing only one base on balls. The Marlins scratched out a run against him in the opening inning, then piled on with three more in the third — two of which were unearned as a result of a throwing error that Holmes made himself. The 32-year-old hurler got just three whiffs on 88 pitches in the ballgame, posting a CSW of 23 percent. He’ll look to get back in the win column as he totes a 3.60 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and a 111/56 K/BB ratio (142 1/3 innings) into Wednesday’s matchup against the Tigers in Detroit.

Holmes completed six innings for the first time since June 7 and pitched into the seventh for just the second time all year. The other time was a home start against the Rockies, which has to be for a pitcher what getting to face position players feels like for hitters. Holmes moved to 11-6 with a 3.60 ERA on the season. He’ll pitch at home against the Marlins next week.

The 32-year-old right-hander struck out four batters on the night while issuing one base on balls. The lone tally against him came on an RBI single off the bat of Jorge Polanco in the fourth inning. Aside from that though, he was able to neutralize a dangerous Mariners’ lineup. Holmes generated nine swings and misses on 88 pitches in the contest — five on his slider — while posting a CSW of 24 percent. Now 10-6 on the season, he’ll bring a 3.64 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and a 105/53 K/BB ratio (131 innings) into Saturday’s matchup against the Braves in Atlanta.

Holmes was terrible, but not quite as bad as Spencer Strider was, so he at least avoids the loss. He struggled to find the strike zone, as he issued five walks against four strikeouts while allowing six hits. Holmes has mostly been solid in his return to starting pitching in 2025, but this wasn’t one of his best efforts. He’ll have a chance to bounce back against Seattle over the weekend.

Holmes scattered three hits and one walk on the evening. All of the damage done against him came in the fourth inning as Kyle Manzardo smacked a run-scoring single and Gabriel Arias delivered a game-tying RBI knock. The 32-year-old right-hander got eight swings and misses on 75 pitches on the night, posting a strong CSW of 32 percent. He’ll look to get back in the win column as he brings a 3.46 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and a 97/47 K/BB ratio (122 1/3 innings) into Tuesday’s showdown against the Braves.

The Holmes experiment continues to underwhelm for New York, as Wednesday’s abbreviated outing in San Diego marked his ninth straight start since June 7 in which he’s failed to pitch into the seventh inning. The lack of efficiency and deep starts has become a troubling trend, especially for a team desperate for rotation stability. He’ll take the ball on Tuesday against Cleveland, unless the Mets decide to shake up their rotation mix at the deadline.

It’s a little surprising the Mets didn’t sent Holmes to the back of the rotation after the break, but he was pitching on five days’ rest today. Workload is a concern for him in his first year back in the rotation, and he’s struggled some lately after thriving for the first three months of the season. His strikeout rate is just 12.5% during July, down from 27.5% in April and about 16.5% in both May and June. The loss leaves him 8-5 with a 3.48 ERA ahead of a start next week against the Giants.

Holmes gave up five hits, walked one and struck out two. The 32-year-old right-hander hasn’t completed at least six innings since June 7 as he transitions into the rotation from the bullpen this year. Holmes threw 81 pitches before giving way to Sean Manaea, who was making his 2025 debut out of the bullpen. Holmes will take a 3.31 ERA and 83/41 K/BB ratio in 103 1/3 innings into the All-Star break.

Holmes allowed one run through five before five straight reached against him to begin the sixth. It was surprising just how long the Mets stuck with him as they fell behind 5-2, but Holmes has great numbers with RISP this season and manager Carlos Mendoza must have figured he’d pitch his way out of it. He didn’t, but at least Richard Lovelady and Alex Carrillo stranded the inherited runner and finished the inning without any further damage. Holmes struck out five in the contest. He’s slated to face the Royals on Sunday.

Holmes allowed a leadoff homer in the first, but he otherwise kept the Brewers scoreless until the sixth, when he was pulled with a 2-1 lead after walking Christian Yelich and retiring Jackson Chourio on a flyout. Reed Garrett took over at that point and allowed three straight batters to reach before giving up a grand slam to Joey Ortiz. Holmes had walked four in the contest, but he was at only 90 pitches when he was lifted. Carlos Mendoza surely would have stuck with him if he could get a do over. Holmes will miss facing the Yankees this weekend and instead get the Orioles on Tuesday.

There simply wasn’t a window to dodge the thunderstorms and get this contest in as originally scheduled so the two sides will reconvene on Wednesday afternoon for a doubleheader instead. Tuesday night’s original starters — Freddy Peralta and Clay Holmes — will be pushed back to take the ball at some point during Wednesday’s twin bill at Citi Field.

This wasn’t a pretty start by Holmes, but he got the job done. Despite constant traffic on the bases, the only run he gave up came via a monster homer run from Drake Baldwin on a two-strike slider that caught him off balance a shade below the zone. It was an impressive shot. Nevertheless, he struggled with command and managed to work out of trouble each time. There really wasn’t one pitch he could spot and there were too many sinkers, cutters, changeups, and sweepers that floated in as completely uncompetitive pitches. He also had some help from a gorgeous home run robbery by Jeff McNeil in center field. As of now, he’s scheduled for a two-start week against the Brewers and Yankees coming up. The Mets rotation is a bit in flux at the moment though, so keep an eye on that schedule.

The last of those walks forced in a run and resulted in Holmes’ removal in the fifth. Huascar Brazobán took over and issued another based-loaded walk before escaping the inning. Holmes came into this one with just two walks in three starts this month and 25 in 14 outings this season. It went as his first loss since May 20. He’ll take a 7-4 record and a 3.04 ERA into his next start, which will again come against the Braves.

Solid again, Holmes has impressively asserted himself as a legitimate starting pitcher through the first half of this season. Yet, he was pulled a bit surprisingly after just five innings of work and 79 pitches here. His velocity dipped a good bit during that fifth inning and the Mets would likely want to manage his workload a tad given since he’s already thrown more innings than he has in any major league season to this point since he’s working as a starter again. Of course, the Mets’ bullpen promptly coughed up their four run lead in the following inning. Be on the lookout for Holmes’ fastball velocity as he continues to work through his transition and whether or not the Mets continue to limit him around 80 pitches, just like they did here. Also, after not allowing a home run through his first seven starts of the season, he’s now given nine in his last seven starts. His next is scheduled to come on the road against the Braves.

Holmes gave up nine hits, but the only run he allowed came on a solo homer off the bat of Ryan McMahon. The 32-year-old didn’t issue a free pass, and he struck out six in another successful outing. Holmes now has an ERA of 2.95 on the season, and you cannot say the conversion to starter has been anything but a success. He gets the Rays next weekend.

Holmes gave up a solo homer to Orlando Arcia in the third and then a hit by a pitch and a two-run homer to Tyler Freeman in the fifth. Only one other batter reached against him, and the runner then was erased on a double play. Holmes is keeping it together nicely even as his home run luck has disappeared. After going without allowing a homer in his first seven starts, he’s given up seven in the last five. Still, he has a 3.34 ERA during the current stretch anyway. He’s 6-3 with a 3.07 ERA overall, and he’s due to pitch in Coors against the Rockies next time out.

The positive news for fantasy managers is that Holmes managed to keep the ball in the park after surrendering five big flies over his last three starts. The 32-year-old righty still isn’t missing bats at a rate that will make him intriguing for fantasy purposes outside of deeper mixed leagues and NL-only formats. He finished with only three punchouts in this one and has recorded five strikeouts or fewer in seven of his 11 outings so far. He’ll bring a respectable 2.98 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 56/23 K/BB ratio across 60 1/3 innings (11 starts) into a favorable home matchup on Sunday against the Rockies.

Solo homers from Carlos Narváez and Rafael Devers in the fifth accounted for all of the scoring in this one, sending Holmes to his third loss. He’s given up five homers in his last three starts after allowing none in his first seven. Still, his luck there was bound to run out at some point, and while the homers have come, he’s still allowed a total of seven runs in his last three outings. He’ll take a 5-3 record and a 3.13 ERA into his next start against the White Sox.

Holmes continues to grow more comfortable as a starting pitcher. He the best command of his sinker in this start that he’s had all season and threw it for more than half of his total pitches. Yet, he still found the right moments to mix in his secondaries. When Cubs’ lead-off hitter Ian Happ – a left-handed batter – came up for his third at-bat of this game, Holmes started him off with a beautiful back-door sweeper and then buried two changeups to eventually force him into a weak ground ball. That’s beautiful pitch-ability. He’s now completed six innings in three of his last four starts and looks like he’s hitting his stride. His next start is scheduled to come on Wednesday against the Pirates.

Weird things keep happening to Holmes during his starts. Last week, he had to deal with a rain delay in the middle of the first inning that forced an awkward stop and restart to his outing he had to work through. Here, he took a hard line drive off the ankle and his only poor inning of the game followed immediately. Still, he was able to dig deep for six innings and his second quality start of the season. His strikeouts have dried up a bit over his last two starts, but again each had some strange, mitigating circumstances. Also, he’s commanded his sinker much better over those two starts then he had all season to that point. When that sinker is working, he’s getting more weak contact and ground balls earlier in at-bats, which was more the case last start than in this one where St. Louis had nine hard-hit balls and more than a few of which were in the air. Nevertheless, he now has a 2.95 ERA on the season and looks like a very capable starting pitcher. He’s scheduled to face the Cubs next time out.

Holmes had faced just two batters, recording an out and giving up a base hit before the game was delayed by rain for nearly an hour. He came back out scattered just four total hits over five scoreless innings while striking out two. Holmes would end his day at just 70 pitches, likely due to the extended delay. The 32-year-old right-hander will take a 2.64 ERA, 1.27 WHIP, and a 36/13 K/BB ratio across 30 2/3 innings into a start against the Diamondbacks in New York on Thursday.

Holmes, who benefitted from Brandon Nimmo robbing Jordan Walker of a solo homer, struck out six before leaving with a two-run lead. Alas, that lead disappeared in the seventh. The Mets went on to win anyway, but Holmes remained 2-1 with a 3.16 ERA. He’ll face the Nationals next weekend.

Holmes allowed two hits, walked two and struck out eight. He’s been too inefficient to pitch deep into games thus far, but he’s 2-1 with a 3.66 ERA and the Mets have won three of his four starts. He’ll face the Cardinals next.
