Mitchell gets an opportunity atop Milwaukee’s lineup to face Arizona veteran starter Merrill Kelly, who has been hit hard in a couple outings this season. Brice Turang is back in the third spot after leading off five of the last six contests. The 27-year-old speedster has been scuffling at the dish recently, but this feels like a nice spot for him to turn things around. He’s always going to strike out a bit more than fantasy managers want to see, but Mitchell is an exciting power/speed combo talent.

Mitchell singled home Gary Sanchez in the fourth inning to give the Brewers a 1-0 lead, kickstarting a three-run fourth for the Brewers. In extras, Mitchell all but put the game out of reach for the Brewers when he doubled to drive in Joey Ortiz and Jake Bauers to put the Brewers up 7-4 in the 10th. Mitchell has four hits in his last 13 at-bats and has also drawn four walks in his last four games.

Mitchell put the Brewers on the board in the first inning with a two-run double. He then extended the lead in the third with a three-run blast off Luinder Avila to make it five RBI on the day with his first homer of the season. The 27-year-old outfielder is 6-for-18 (.333) with one homer, three steals, and ten RBI in the early going. His power and speed upside comes with lots of strikeouts, but Mitchell is a solid streamer against right-handed pitching in deeper leagues.

Just a few days ago, we were worried Mitchell might be squeezed for playing time after a very rough spring in which he struck out nearly half of the time. However, with Jackson Chourio and now Andrew Vaughn on the IL, he’s going to have some time to figure things out as the Brewers’ regular center fielder. Noteworthy is that he’s murdering the ball when he’s been able to make contact. He had a 59% hard-hit rate this spring, and his two hits tonight left the bat at 108.7 and 107.4 mph.

There’s reason for long-term optimism with Mitchell based on his elite bat speed and athleticism but he’s going through it at the dish this spring, batting .080 (2-for-25) with one homer, one steal and 15 strikeouts in nine games. The 27-year-old’s struggles aren’t totally unexpected considering shoulder surgeries have limited him to just over 50 games in the big leagues since 2022. He’s still on track to open the year as Milwaukee’s starting center fielder but he’s going to strike out a ton and might not have any appeal for fantasy managers right away.

Mitchell got the game started with a bang, crushing the first pitch thrown from Michael Lorenzen for a 462-foot (111.5 mph EV) solo shot. He then smacked a bases-clearing double in the fifth inning that gave the Brewers a 7-5 lead. Mitchell also drew a walk in the contest, reaching base safely in three of his four plate appearances. He’s off to a terrific start this spring, slashing .286/.500/.867 with a homer, four RBI and a 4/3 K/BB ratio. It looks like he’ll open the season as the Brewers’ starting center fielder and leadoff hitter, which makes him an intriguing late-round option from a fantasy perspective.

Mitchell’s single, which came off Brewers teammate DL Hall, was hit 2.7-mph harder than his high mark as a major leaguer. He’s been brought along slowly this spring as he returns from shoulder surgery, but it doesn’t seem like he’s lost any bat speed. In major league exhibitions to date, he’s gone 0-for-4 with three strikeouts and two walks, with his one ball in play being a 108-mph grounder.

Mitchell had shoulder surgery in June and missed the remainder of the 2025 season. He was cleared for all baseball activities earlier this month and will now make his spring training debut. The 27-year-old will have a chance to earn a starting job in center field if he can prove that he’s healthy, but he has yet to play more than 70 games in one season at the MLB level.

Mitchell was eligible for arbitration for the first time despite being limited to 443 major league plate appearances to date. Just 78 of those came last season, as he opened up with a strained oblique and then injured his shoulder after returning, necessitating shoulder surgery. The Brewers can’t have much idea what they’ll get out of him at this point, but since they traded Isaac Collins and they don’t seem overly eager to bring in outfielders, an opportunity should be there for him if he can stay healthy. He’s hit .254/.333/.433 thus far in his career and racked up 3.3 fWAR in less than one full season of playing time.

It’s merely a procedural move as Mitchell will miss the rest of the season after undergoing left shoulder surgery earlier this week. The 26-year-old center fielder is expected to be ready for the outset of spring training. His promising career has been derailed by several shoulder injuries over the last few years.

The goal is for him to be ready to go next spring, but it doesn’t sound like that’s assured. Because of the shoulder and other injuries, Mitchell has played in just 141 major league games since debuting four years ago, though he’s racked up 3.6 bWAR when he’s been on the field.

A second opinion on Friday confirmed that surgery would be required to repair the issue. The Brewers are optimistic that he’ll still be able to return at some point before the 2025 season comes to a close, but a clear timeline won’t be known until after he undergoes the procedure.

Brewers manager Pat Murphy told reporters Mitchell, who is headed for a second opinion on the initial diagnosis, will likely miss at least 8-10 weeks following the procedure. The 26-year-old outfielder dislodged some of the anchors from his previous left shoulder surgery back in 2023 while playing in a minor league rehab game on Friday for Triple-A Nashville.

Mitchell was in the final stages of his rehabilitation process from an oblique strain. Murphy added that the 26-year-old outfielder will be pulled off his rehab assignment to undergo additional imaging after initial results were inconclusive. There’s a significant level of concern here since he underwent left shoulder surgery back in 2023. There should be an update on his status at some point in the coming days.

Mitchell could return this weekend or early next week after missing nearly two months with an oblique strain. Isaac Collins, who has been playing pretty regularly in the Milwaukee outfield lately, will lose at-bats.

Mitchell and fellow rehabbing outfielder Blake Perkins (shin) have both been cleared to begin their rehab assignments. Mitchell has been sidelined since April 25 due to a strained oblique. Brewers’ skipper Pat Murphy told reporters earlier in the week that he anticipates both of them returning to the roster at some point in early July barring any setbacks.

The report when Mitchell went down on Apr. 25 was that his oblique strain was rather mild, but as the weeks have gone by without updates of any sort, it had become apparent that he wasn’t progressing as hoped. It’s unfortunate the Brewers are being so tightlipped here. As of a couple of days ago, MLB.com still had Mitchell’s return pegged as “late May/early June.” Perkins was originally expected back from his fracture weeks ago, but updates there have been scarce, too.

Mitchell is still striking out over 30 percent of the time this season, and has yet to leave the yard through 25 games, hitting just .208 with three steals during that span. The 26-year-old center fielder heads to the shelf after making an early exit from Friday’s series opener against the Cardinals with left oblique tightness. No word yet on how much time he’s going to miss, but fantasy managers should expect a multi-week absence, even if it’s a low-grade strain.

It’s unclear when exactly he sustained the injury or the severity of it. Given how tricky oblique injuries usually are though, it wouldn’t be surprising at all to see Mitchell ultimately land on the injured list for at least a couple of weeks. Stay tuned, as the Brewers should have an update on his status after the game.

Mitchell used his wheels to manufacture a run in the second inning, as he worked Landen Roupp for a leadoff walk, stole second base, advanced to third on a ground ball and scampered home on a wild pitch. He also singled with two outs in the eighth inning and swiped second base but was left stranded there. On the season, the 26-year-old outfielder is hitting a disappointing .209/.289/.299 with zero homers, three RBI and three stolen bases.
