Meadows hit the shelf last week with a fractured arm and a concussion following a collision with teammate Riley Greene. The 26-year-old center fielder is facing a lengthy absence. Javier Báez figures to see most of the reps in his place at least until top prospect Max Clark is ready.

Detroit Free-Press’ Evan Petzoid reports Meadows has no timetable for his return and “will miss significant time.” Javier Báez is taking over in center field on Friday. Meadows had gotten off to a .250/.308/.333 start with three stolen bases. He’s not a must-hold in shallow leagues with limited injured list spots.

Meadows suffered what looked to be a pretty significant concussion in a collision with teammate Riley Greene in the outfield during the eighth inning of Thursday’s loss to the Twins. He was disoriented and remained on the ground for several minutes afterwards before ultimately sitting up and being carted off the field. It sounds like a trip to the injured list could be in store here.

The two players were converging on a fly ball in the eighth inning and Meadows took the brunt of the hit, remaining on the ground for several minutes afterwards and bleeding from the mouth before being carted off of the field. It appeared as though his head collided with Greene and again hit the ground, so it sounds like he’ll need to be put through the concussion protocol before he’s able to return. The Tigers should provide an update on his status as soon as more information becomes available.

Meadows dinked a two-run single into shallow left field as part of a four-run rally against Nick Pivetta in the third inning. He also struck out and flew out to left field in the ballgame. Given how poorly he performed offensively during the spring, there’s pressure on Meadows to produce at the dish during the first weeks of the season or he could ultimately risk demotion to Triple-A Toledo. This was a nice first step toward doing so.

The Tigers still haven’t announced their position players, but barring an injury or a surprising decision to send down Kevin McGonigle, it looks like it’s Meadows and Wenceel Pérez for one spot, and though there’s been nothing to indicate an injury, Pérez hasn’t started a game since Tuesday. It seems like good news for Meadows, who is hitting .290/.389/.387 this month after opening the spring 1-for-14 in February.

The 26-year-old outfielder finally got the Tigers on the board in the fifth inning, smacking a two-run single off of Joshua Loeschorn. It’s been a very rough spring for him overall, hitting .133 (4-for-30) with no homers, two RBI and a stolen base. If he weren’t such an exceptional defender in center field, he’d likely be opening the season at Triple-A Toledo.

If McGoningle secures a spot on the Opening Day roster, Petzold speculates that they’ll have to move on from one of Matt Vierling, Wenceel Pérez, Jahmai Jones, or Meadows. Meadows simply doesn’t give them the value off the bench that they’d like compared to Pérez and Jones. And, to boot, Meadows is hitting .059 with one walk and five strikeouts in six spring training games.

Meadows has led off all six times he’s played this spring, which is pretty interesting, but he isn’t exactly making a case for the spot in the regular season by going 1-for-17 with one walk to date. Meadows has 16 homers and 21 steals in 656 career major league plate appearances, so he’d offer some fantasy upside if he led off against righties and remained in the lineup while batting somewhere lower against lefties. Still, his lifetime .308 OBP (.291 in 58 games last season) argues against it.

The Athletic’s Cody Stavenhagen speculates that this is “perhaps a response to Meadows’ tendency to whiff on elevated fastballs.” Meadows’ new hand position is a cue to force him to raise his hands to get his bat on an ideal plane, and his “swing overall looks shorter and tighter.” The 26-year-old was limited to just 58 games last year due to multiple injuries, but he’s a strong defender in center field and has the raw tools to be an impactful fantasy player if he’s healthy enough to be on the field. This new stance could help him unlock that upside.

Meadows smacked a one-out single off of right-hander Slade Cecconi in the third inning, advanced to third on a single by Gleyber Torres and scored the game’s first run on an RBI double off the bat of Kerry Carpenter. He also reached on a bunt single that was supposed to be a sacrifice in the seventh inning, but Eric Sabrowski didn’t have enough urgency and Meadows burnt down the line to beat it out, sparking a four-run rally for the Tigers. Expect him to continue hitting out of the bottom spot in the Tigers’ lineup after how well it worked for them on Thursday.

It’s the same nine for Detroit, but most guys are moving up a spot with Meadows going from first to last. The exceptions are Spencer Torkelson and Riley Greene; they remain fourth and fifth, respectively, with the slumping Wenceel Pérez jumping from sixth to third.

Meadows was replaced by Andy Ibáñez with a lefty on the mound in the seventh. He’s been the Tigers’ best hitter since coming off the IL on Sept. 5, going 12-for-35 with two homers in 10 games, and he’s been leading off against righties as a result. Still, he needs to get even hotter to avoid being replaced against left-handed relievers.

Meadows also had three hits and a homer Tuesday, so he’s 6-for-13 with two homers, six RBI, three walks and no strikeouts since coming off the injured list. If feels like he’ll be the Tigers’ center fielder against right-handers the rest of the way, making him of use in deeper formats.

Meadows got the Tigers on the board and evened the scored at two runs apiece with his 391-foot (107.1 mph EV) two-run blast off of Will Warren in the fifth inning. He then delivered a go-ahead RBI single and scored as Colt Keith was plunked with the bases loaded during a nine-run uprising in the seventh inning. With his three-hit attack. the 25-year-old outfielder is now slashing .216/.291/.351 with four homers, 14 RBI and three stolen bases in his first 148 plate appearances on the season.

Meadows made a statement in his return from the injured list on Friday, launching the very first pitch that he saw from Shane Smith for a game-tying, 385-foot (106.1 mph EV) two-run shot to right field. He also made an outstanding diving catch in center field. The 25-year-old defensive wizard made a major impact in the Tigers’ playoff push during the 2024 season and if Friday was any indication, he’s ready to make some noise in 2025 as well.

Tonight, at least, it seems that the Tigers will play with 14 position players and 12 pitchers. Meadows, who missed five weeks with a quad strain, will contend for starts in center field against righties. Wenceel Pérez and Javier Báez have been sharing time there, with Pérez also getting starts in right. Justyn-Henry Malloy could be sent down when the Tigers go back to 13 pitchers.

Meadows has been on the IL with a quad strain since July 28, so the Tigers are going to want to see him play the field for back-to-back full games before they bring him back. However, it’s nice to see the 25-year-old controlling the strike zone and making good contact. His 2025 season has been mostly lost due to injury, but he could help fantasy teams in the final month of the season.

Meadows has been out since late July recovering from a right quad strain. He’s the type of power/speed combo outfielder that can make a difference in deeper fantasy leagues if he gets hot down the home stretch.

Meadows has been on the IL since July 28th and has struggled with injuries throughout the year, also missing the first few months of the season with a nerve issue in his arm. Meadows will have “an important running test” during this current series with the Athletics and, if that goes well, could start a rehab assignment later this week.

Meadows hit the injured list last week with a right quad strain, so it’s an encouraging sign that he’s back up and running again, literally. The 25-year-old center fielder might be able to return without a rehab assignment if he checks all of the metaphorical boxes in the coming days.

Meadows has underperformed this season relative to some fantasy managers’ lofty preseason expectations, batting .200/.270/.296 with two homers and three steals in 137 plate appearances over 38 games. There is no timetable for the 25-year-old center fielder’s return at the moment, but he figures to be facing a multi-week absence given the nature of the injury.

Meadows smacked a double off of Max Scherzer in the third inning and then rode home on a three-run blast by Gleyber Torres. The 25-year-old outfielder also singled and scored during the team’s seven-run uprising in the eighth inning. He has had a rough year at the dish since returning from the injured list, slashing just .200/.270/.296 with two homers, nine RBI, three stolen bases and a 40/12 K/BB ratio through his first 137 plate appearances.

With the Tigers’ lineup finally healthy for the most part, you’re going to start seeing more days off for regulars in the lineup as manager A.J. Hinch attempts to work everybody in. Meadows has struggled since his return from the injured list, slashing a disappointing .181/.263/.319 with a pair of homers, seven RBI and two stolen bases in 80 plate appearances. Matt Vierling will start in Meadows’ place in center field on Saturday.

Meadows is hitting just .172 in 19 games with 18 strikeouts and eight walks, but the Tigers are confident enough in him to play him against lefties and keep him in the lineup. Fantasy managers should also maintain the faith in Meadows, who remains an intriguing power/speed option in the outfield.

Meadows has gotten off to a slow start this season, slashing .172/.262/.345 with two home runs and seven RBI. However, he did miss three months with a nerve issue in his arm, so some rust should be expected. He came into today with a 90.3 mph average exit velocity and 7.7 percent barrel rate, with an above-average swinging strike rate and contact rate. His defense is going to keep him in the lineup, so we expect him to continue rounding into form. Don’t give up on him yet.

It doesn’t seem like a good sign that the Tigers had fellow left-handed hitter Colt Keith hit in Meadows’ place against a right-hander, but it’s understandable, given that Meadows is just 6-for-42 since coming off the injured list. The good news is that Meadows’ exit velocity numbers are actually better than usual; he came into the day a 92.3 mph average exit velocity, a .262 xBA and a .499 xSLG. His defense will help keep him in the lineup until his luck changes on offense.

It appears to be just a routine night off for the 25-year-old outfielder, though the timing is odd with a right-hander on the mound and after Meadows slugged his first home run of the season during Thursday’s victory over the Orioles. Wenceel Perez will start in his place in center field and will bat sixth for the Tigers against Nick Martinez and the Reds on Friday evening.
