Nelson’s final start of 2025 was a mixed bag, one that saw him pile up the strikeouts but also allow seven hits. The 27-year-old finishes 2025 — assuming the D-backs don’t win a postseason spot, which isn’t likely now — with a 3.39 ERA, and was one of the bright spots for a so-so season for Arizona. He’ll pitch near the top of their rotation to open the 2026 season, and certainly has some fantasy upside.

Nelson wasn’t anywhere close to dominant, as he picked up just one strikeout and walked two batters while allowing five hits. He still limited the damage to just the pair of runs, and it’s yet another solid outing for the 27-year-old former top prospect. Nelson now has a 3.34 ERA, and he’ll get one more chance to lower that number in 2025 against the Dodgers on Wednesday.

He left with a two-run lead that was blown by Taylor Rashi in the eighth. It’s Nelson’s sixth straight start in which he’s completed six innings. He’s not racking up the strikeouts in the process — he had a 4/3 K/BB tonight — but he hasn’t really needed to chase them with his fastball working so well; he threw it 62% of the time tonight. Nelson will face the Phillies next weekend.

Nelson walked three batters on the afternoon while striking out three. The only damage done against him came on an RBI single off the bat of Trevor Story in the fourth inning. He exited with a 3-1 lead, but his chances of earning a victory evaporated the inning after he left. Nelson got 11 swings and misses on 105 pitches on the day, registering a CSW of 25 percent. He has been terrific in 30 appearances (20 starts) for the Diamondbacks this season, posting a 3.48 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and a 118/36 K/BB ratio over 137 innings. He’ll try once again to earn that elusive eighth victory when he takes on the Twins in Minneapolis on Saturday.

The score was tied 3-3 when Nelson threw his final pitch, but the Diamondbacks came through with two in the bottom of the sixth, putting him in line for the win. Alas, the lead was blown in the ninth. Nelson allowed only four hits in the contest, though two were homers. It’s his third straight quality start, and he’ll carry an 7-3 record and a 3.57 ERA into a Sunday start against the Red Sox.

Nelson continues to be effective with his heavy diet of fastballs and just enough variation off it. He threw that heater 62% of the time in this one and it was his only pitch to induce multiple swings-and-misses. It also forced 17 foul balls as the Brewers could not quite pick it up. He’ll take a solid 3.53 ERA into a two-start week against the Rangers and Red Sox with both starts coming at home.

Nelson gave up a pair of runs in the second and another in the sixth. The 27-year-old was better than start Monday where he allowed five runs over 5 1/3 innings, but we’ve certainly seen the 27-year-old look better than he did Friday night. He still possesses a solid 3.63 ERA and will look to lower that figure Wednesday against the Brewers.

Nelson racked up six strikeouts on the evening and didn’t walk a batter. He had allowed just one run — an RBI double by Corey Seager — through the first five innings. He returned for the sixth though with a 6-1 lead and proceeded to allow a double, two singles and then a three-run blast to Wyatt Langford that pulled the Rangers to within a run. Nelson was still in line for a victory though until Rowdy Tellez belted a game-tying solo homer in the ninth inning. He’ll try to get back in the win column as he brings a 3.46 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and a 95/30 K/BB ratio (106 2/3 innings) into Saturday’s matchup against the Rockies at Coors Field.

Nelson gave up a solo homer to Xander Bogaerts to lead off the second inning before giving up another run on a triple and a double. Nelson settled in four three more scoreless innings and recorded the first two outs in the sixth before his day was done at 100 pitches. He collected eight strikeouts on the day. The 27-year-old right-hander will take a 3.20 ERA, 1.05 WHIP, and an 89/30 K/BB ratio across 101 1/3 innings into a start against the Rangers in Texas on Monday.

Nelson wasn’t spectacular, but this start would have looked better if not for two errors from Geraldo Perdomo. The 27-year-old right-hander gave up a two-run homer to Kerry Carpenter as well as a run-scoring triple to Carpenter, but outside of that he was solid. Nelson has now lowered his ERA to 3.20 on the season, and he’ll make his first start in August against the Padres on Tuesday.

Nelson and Pirates’ starter Mike Burrows matched each other with six scoreless frames in a game that didn’t see its first run until a sac fly by Eugenio Suárez in the 11th inning. Nevertheless, Nelson was effective with fastball after fastball at the top of the zone and was fortunate that the eight hard-hit balls he allowed never came back to bite him. That’s because most of them came on relatively harmless fly balls, which has been a trend for Nelson this season. His 3.29 ERA this season is fantastic and he’ll try to keep the momentum going in his next start against the Tigers.

The run came on a 443-foot blast from Alec Burleson in the sixth. Nelson allowed only three other hits and walked one in winning a fourth straight decision. He’s 6-2 with a 3.52 ERA overall, and he’ll make for a solid play in mixed leagues with the Pirates on tap next week.

Nelson was outstanding over his previous five starts, but this didn’t continue that good run. He walked four while striking out just one hitter, and two of the seven hits he allowed left the park. It coulda been worse, but it’s a disappointing effort considering he’s been so impressive over the last month-plus. It would seem logical that Nelson will be one of the first few starters after the All-Star break despite this setback.

Nelson’s run of excellent starts continued Saturday as he held the Royals to one run over seven innings. The one run came in to score in the sixth inning on three base hits. He scattered one other hit and did not walk a batter while striking out five. The 27-year-old right-hander will take a 3.39 ERA, 0.98 WHIP, and a 64/21 K/BB ratio across 74 1/3 innings into a start against the Angels in Anaheim on Friday.

According to D’Agostino, “Nelson has been dealing with soreness on the days after his outings, seemingly more than is usual... He can be seen in the clubhouse after throwing bullpens and after games with a large ice pack wrapped around his arm.” That soreness could be mostly the result of Nelson moving in and out of the rotation and having to transition between roles; however, with all the injuries Arizona has dealt with this season, they are right to be cautious with Nelson. Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said Nelson “had already exceeded his [pitch] limit” when he was removed from the game on Monday, which means his limit was likely around 80-85 pitches. That may be a number that the Diamondbacks keep him near for the next few starts.

Nelson doesn’t get the decision, but it was another solid start for 27-year-old. He struck out seven, and outside of a two-run double he allowed to Tyler Fitzgerald, he was in control throughout the contest. Nelson has allowed just four runs over his last four starts, and it’s seen his ERA drop from 4.60 to 3.61. His next chance to lower that mark is scheduled for Saturday, and it comes against the struggling Royals’ offense.

Nelson allowed just one hit on the evening while walking three batters. That lone hit also produced the White Sox’ only run as Luis Robert Jr. got him for a solo shot in the second inning. Aside from that though, Nelson was in complete control. He generated 12 swings and misses on 87 pitches on the night — 11 of them on his fastball — while posting a CSW of 24 percent. He’ll look to get back in the win column as he lugs a 3.71 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and a 52/21 K/BB ratio (60 2/3 innings) into Monday’s divisional showdown against the Giants.

The only hit against him was Alejandro Kirk’s homer in the second. Nelson turned in a dud against the Reds two weeks ago, but he’s allowed one or no runs over at least five innings in his other four starts this season. The middling strikeout rate makes him look like a weak bet in shallow leagues, but he’s a decent play next week with the White Sox on the schedule.

Nelson gave up a run in the first on a sac fly, but that run was unearned because of an error on the throw by Alek Thomas. After that, the right-hander did give up some baserunners with six hits, but no one else crossed the plate while he struck out three and issued just one walk. Nelson now has an ERA of 4.14 on the season, and will look to build on this effort next week against the Blue Jays.

Nelson was hit hard in the first inning as he surrendered five runs, including three on a home run by Christian Encarnacion-Strand. He tossed two scoreless frames before starting the fourth with a walk and a base hit that would end his day at 77 pitches. Both inherited runners would come in to score. The 27-year-old right-hander will take a 4.60 ERA, 1.11 WHIP, and a 38/15 K/BB ratio across 45 innings into a start against the Padres in Arizona on Friday.

Nelson was summoned to gobble up four innings on Saturday against the Nationals after starter Brandon Pfaadt’s unexpected implosion led to his removal without recording a single out. The 27-year-old righty was going to have to move back eventually with veteran lefty Eduardo Rodriguez (shoulder) poised to return from the injured list in the near future. It’s a disappointing development for fantasy managers since Nelson has pitched extremely well when he’s been given a chance.

Lovullo mentioned that Eduardo Rodriguez (shoulder) would make one more rehab start to build up his pitch count and then could return to the rotation next week. That would mean Nelson would move back to the bullpen despite pitching better than a few of the starters currently in Arizona’s rotation. Hopefully one more good start might convince Lovullo otherwise.

Sure, it comes against a dreadful Pittsburgh offense, but Nelson was strong Monday, allowing just four hits and not issuing a single walk. This comes after giving up just one run against the Dodgers in his previous outing, and an ERA that was at 5.82 at the end of April now sits at a respectable 3.79. Nelson is worthy of streaming consideration for Sunday’s scheduled tilt against the Nationals.

Nelson had a solid day on the mound in his first start in the rotation as he fills in for the injured Eduardo Rodriguez. He held the Dodgers to one run on three hits and one walk while striking out two over five innings on an efficient 71 pitches. The 27-year-old right-hander has posted a 4.60 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, and a 30/11 K/BB ratio across 31 1/3 innings. Nelson will make his next start against the Pirates in Arizona on Monday.

Nelson worked a scoreless eighth, and the D-Backs let the right-hander finish the job for his first save of the year. He threw 11-of-16 pitches for strikes and looked the part while keeping the Dodgers off the bases during those two frames, and even with a 5.01 ERA, it’s possible the D-Backs will turn to him again for save chances.

Nelson’s biggest issue was free passes, as he gave up four of them while landing just 39-of-70 pitches for strikes. That being said, outside of a two-run homer from Pete Alonso he was able to keep New York off the board. Nelson was starting in place of Corbin Burnes (shoulder), but manager Torey Lovullo said that Burnes will make his next start. That would seem to put Nelson back into a long relief role, but even if Nelson had started against the Dodgers this weekend, he would have been an unappealing option from a fantasy perspective.

He’ll be taking the rotation spot of Corbin Burnes, who is being skipped this time through the rotation due to soreness in his shoulder. Nelson has been working out of the Diamondbacks’ bullpen and isn’t completely stretched out, so he shouldn’t be expected to throw more than 80-85 pitches on Monday. He would line up for a second start on Saturday against the Dodgers if Burnes is unable to go by then.

Arizona was dealing with a short pen today, and the team was probably looking for Nelson to go multiple innings after entering down 2-1. Instead, he threw 36 pitches and got two outs before being replaced by Bryce Jarvis. There’s a good chance he’ll be sent down in exchange for a fresh arm after this, but that might be best for everyone; Nelson, who entered with a 4.50 ERA in 10 innings out of the pen, is going to be needed as a starter at some point, and the Diamondbacks should have him stretched out when it happens.
