Ortiz opened the scoring in the ballgame with an RBI single off of Miles Mikolas in the second inning that plated Jake Bauers. He also singled with two outs in the sixth inning but was left stranded there. This season has been a struggle offensively for the 27-year-old infielder, as he’s slashing just .229/.277/.313 with seven homers, 45 RBI and 13 stolen bases in 486 plate appearances.

Ortiz landed on the injured list on August 22 with a left hamstring strain. He has made nice progress over the past week though and is ready to return on the first day that he’s eligible to do so without requiring a minor league rehab stint. The 27-year-old infielder has hit .233/.284/.328 with seven homers, 43 RBI and 11 swipes in 434 plate appearances with the Brewers this season.

Ortiz suffered the injured during Thursday’s ballgame against the Cubs. No official word yet on the results of Ortiz’s MRI exam or how severe the strain is, but he’ll miss at least a couple of weeks. Andruw Monasterio is starting in his place at shortstop on Friday night and should see increased action while Oritz is shelved.

Brewers’ manager Pat Murphy didn’t have any additional information to pass along after the game, only that Ortiz would head for further testing. He’s considered day-to-day for the time being but be sure to check back on his status before setting lineups for the weekend.

Ortiz was lifted from the contest after a fifth-inning ground out. The 27-year-old shortstop fouled a ball off his right knee earlier this week, but didn’t end up missing any time. The concern here is that he appeared to be grabbing at his left leg. There should be an update on his status soon.

X-rays came back negative for any fractures after Ortiz fouled a ball off the outside of his right knee that hit a nerve and caused his leg to go numb during the second game of Tuesday’s doubleheader at Wrigley Field.

Ortiz will head for further evaluation and testing after fouling a ball off his right knee during the nightcap of Tuesday’s twin bill at Wrigley Field. The 27-year-old isn’t an impactful hitter at the dish, but he’s a phenomenal defensive shortstop, which is where his absence would be felt most. There should be an update on his status soon.

Ortiz also doubled twice last night. He’s in the midst of a second nice two-week run this season. He had one in mid-June that raised his OPS from .504 to .572, where it held pretty steady through the end of July. Now he’s hit .391/.440/.543 during the Brewers’ 12-game winning streak, moving his OPS from .566 to .617. Prior to last night’s game, the only game this season he’d concluded with a .600 OPS was Opening Day’s, when he went 2-for-4.

Murphy had previously said he was “pissed” and wanted Ortiz to “give me his best approach at the plate every day... we’re playing him every day, and he just can’t have lapses at the plate like that.” Since June 1, Ortiz is hitting .263/.311/.424 with four home runs, 20 RBI, and four steals in 31 games. He also has a 16/6 K/BB ratio over that stretch, so the swing decisions don’t seem to be too egregious. Hopefully this doesn’t interrupt the rhythm he was creating at the plate.

Milwaukee manager Pat Murphy told reporters Ortiz is taking a seat for the second straight game to help clean up some of his swing decisions. The 26-year-old shortstop is hitting .209/.269/.306 with six homers and nine steals in 87 games leading up to the All-Star break.

Ortiz broke a 2-2 tie in the sixth with his sixth homer of the year. Four of those six have come in his last six games, as he’s raised his OPS from .492 on June 6 and .541 on June 23 to .579 now. Ortiz had been particularly hopeless with the bases loaded prior to today, going just 2-for-25, with both hits being singles, over the course of his career.

It’s the first career multi-homer game for the 26-year-old infielder. Ortiz opened the scoring in the ballgame as he ambushed a first-pitch fastball from Andrew Heaney for a 397-foot (104.6 mph EV) two-run blast in the third inning. He then belted a 1-2 changeup from Heaney for a 398-foot (102.4 mph EV) solo shot in the fourth that extended the Brewers’ lead to 6-0. He also plated a run with a fielder’s choice in the eighth inning. On the season, Ortiz is now slashing .217/.275/.297 with four long balls and 18 RBI on the season.

Ortiz didn’t really stand out in a 17-7 game, but any production here has to be cherished. It’s his first three-RBI game and second three-hit and three-run scored game of the year. With five hits the last two days, he has his average over the Mendoza Line for the first time since mid-April.

The Brewers might need to look at adding another shortstop candidate; Ortiz hasn’t sported an average better than .200 or an OPS better than .520 since Apr. 16, and there isn’t really anyone in the minors to replace him. Ortiz’s four balls in play today had a combined xBA of .280.

At least he’s consistent; all three of his balls in play today were hit with 71– to 74-degree launch angles and traveled 67-97 feet. A league-average hitter as a rookie last season, Ortiz has been a big disappointment in coming in at .186/.252/.212 so far. His strikeout rate has dropped from 20% to 15%, but he’s not hitting the ball as hard or pulling it as often as he did last year. Maybe it’s fixable, but in the meantime, the Brewers might have to try someone different at shortstop soon.
