Ortiz, who was a member of Cleveland’s rotation before being placed on leave on July 3, is reportedly being investigated in regard to prop bets made on his pitches while he was on the mound for two games in June.

According to Passan, those pitches were made June 15 and June 27 and both pitches were well outside of the strike zone to open innings. The assumption being that Ortiz could have thrown those pitches outside the strike zone on purpose, as first-pitch strike/ball to open an inning could be a “prop” on various websites. The 26-year-old right-hander was placed on non-disciplinary leave while being investigated.

The leave will extend through the All-Star break, and obviously his absence away from the club will be considerably higher — if not permanent — if he’s found to have violated the league’s policy. There should be considerably more details in the coming days, but don’t expect to see Ortiz on the mound soon.

We don’t yet know the reason why Ortiz was placed on non-disciplinary leave, but we do know that he will be out through the All-Star break because of an MLB investigation. We’ll await more details, but Ortiz can be dropped in most leagues since he will be out for three weeks at least. He was supposed to start tonight against the Cubs, but now Joey Cantillo will instead.

Ortiz gave up six hits, walked one and struck out five. Ortiz was really up against it in this one as the Guardians offense could only muster one hit let alone any runs against Cardinals ace Sonny Gray. It’s difficult to win like that and Ortiz was saddled with his ninth loss of the year. His ERA is up to 4.36 on the year while his 3.67 xFIP shows he’s been a bit better than that. Ortiz will look for better luck and maybe even some run support in his next start against the Cubs on the road next week.

Ortiz gave up just two hits, and both were singles. The 26-year-old was outstanding Saturday, and he generated an impressive 14 swings-and-misses among his 92 pitches. It’s a marked improvement from the six-run effort he put together against the Mariners on Sunday, and it improves his ERA to a still-shaky 4.30 over 80 2/3 innings. Ortiz will look to build on this effort against the Cardinals on Friday in St. Louis.

Ortiz struggled with his command in this one, issuing five free passes while striking out five batters on the afternoon. Most of the damage came during a five-run uprising in the second inning that was capped off by a grand slam off the bat of J.P. Crawford. The M’s added another run in the fifth in an RBI knock by Mitch Garver. Ortiz got 12 swings and misses on 104 pitches on the day, registering a CSW of 31 percent. He’ll try to put this one behind him and get back on track as he carries a 4.64 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and an 81/39 K/BB ratio (75 2/3 innings) into Saturday’s showdown against the Athletics in West Sacramento.

Ortiz pitched a scoreless first and then gave up single runs each subsequent inning. He came into this one with a 2.28 ERA in his previous five starts, and he definitely seems like an improved pitcher, even if he’s not yet an every-week mixed-league guy. He’s 3-7 with a 4.26 ERA for the season, and he’s due to face the Mariners next.

The Yankees couldn’t get anything going against Ortiz. Two of their three hits came during his last inning. One was erased by a double play before an Aaron Judge single forced Guardians’ manager Stephen Vogt called on the lefty Tim Herrin to face Cody Bellinger with a man on base. Nevertheless, Ortiz had everything working in this one. His slider led the way as his primary pitch and had the Yankees either flailing or off balance nearly every time he threw it. In all, each of his four pitches forced multiple swings-and-misses and he faced practically no trouble against this talented Yankees lineup. Ortiz is lined up for a two-start week coming up against the Reds and Mariners.

The 26-year-old right-hander struck out five batters on the night while issuing a pair of walks. The lone tally against him came on an RBI single off the bat of Jo Adell in the second inning. Unfortunately, that was enough to hang a loss on Ortiz as the Guardians couldn’t scratch out a run of support for him. He got 10 swings and misses on 97 pitches in the ballgame, registering a CSW of 33 percent. He’ll carry a 4.40 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and a 64/30 K/BB ratio (59 1/3 innings) into a tough matchup against the Yankees in New York on Thursday.

Ortiz couldn’t find the strike zone, as he walked five and threw just 49-of-89 pitches for strikes. He still was able to hold the Tigers to ‘only’ the three runs with three strikeouts in a start that could have gone considerably worse for the 26-year-old. He’ll try and lower a 4.73 ERA in a scheduled start against the Angels, but fantasy managers shouldn’t count on that happening.

Ortiz gave up six hits, walked two and struck out seven. The 26-year-old right-hander pitched well for the most part, but was done-in by a two-run home run by Will Benson in the fourth inning. Ortiz continues to have bad luck this year as he’s saddled with a 4.66 ERA despite a 3.72 xFIP. Ortiz has a 56/23 K/BB ratio in 48 1/3 innings this year. He’s lined up to face the Tigers on the road next weekend.

Ortiz followed up his best outing of the year with a real clunker. Eight of the 18 balls in play against him were hit at least 100 mph, and he wound up with four strikeouts and three walks. He definitely should have kept his cutter in his back pocket today; the six times he threw it produced a homer, a double and four balls. Ortiz will take a 5.30 ERA into his next start against the Phillies.

Ortiz gave up just three hits, struck out five and only handed out a pair of free passes. He wasn’t exactly overpowering, generating just 10 swinging strikes. However, he managed to throw enough strikes with his five-pitch mix to keep the Twins off-balance, allowing just four hard-hit batted balls with exit velocities over 95 mph. He’ll bring a respectable 4.78 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 36/16 K/BB ratio across 32 innings (six starts) into a road tilt on Monday against the Nationals.

As might have been expected after the Pirates traded him in the offseason, Ortiz had a little something extra on his pitches tonight; his 96.8 mph average on his fastball topped his previous season high of 96.2. He bettered it just once in his 15 starts last year. He struck out eight, his second highest total in 38 career starts. The high of 10 was established in his previous start versus the Royals. Ortiz struggled all spring and had an 8.44 ERA in his first two regular-season starts, but maybe he’s figured a little something out now? Or maybe he’s just faced two of MLB’s coldest offenses in his last two starts. Let’s see how he fares against the Yankees next week before considering him in mixed leagues.

He gave up just one hit, a Vinnie Pasquantino solo shot in the fourth. Ortiz very nearly threw away his spot in the Guardians rotation with a 10.13 ERA and 14 walks allowed in 18 2/3 innings this spring, and he had an 8.44 ERA through his first two regular-season starts, so he definitely needed this. He’ll still need to do it a couple of more times before he’ll again be someone to consider in mixed leagues. He’s due to face his old teammates in Pittsburgh next time out.
