It seems unlikely that Sánchez will make it back before the regular season wraps up since he’s been out since early July recovering from a right knee sprain. He’ll be a full-go heading into the offseason.

Sanchez has already been sidelined since early July due to a right knee sprain and is still rehabbing, so this move won’t impact his timeline at all. It was done as a procedural move to clear a spot on the team’s 40-man roster for Vimael Machin on Friday.

So, Sept. 1 at best. The Orioles hope to have Adley Rutschman back right upon the conclusion of the break or soon thereafter. They’re getting by with Jacob Stallings and Alex Jackson at catcher for now.

Orioles interim manager Tony Mansolino told reporters Sunday that Sánchez has been diagnosed with a moderate right PCL strain. It’ll be Alex Jackson, not top prospect Samuel Basallo, coming up to join Baltimore’s catching mix behind Jacob Stallings. It’s a perplexing situation, but clearly the Orioles want to keep Basallo in the minors and get through the All-Star break when it’s possible Adley Rutschman will be ready to return from the injured list.

Sánchez will sit out Sunday’s contest after making an early exit from Saturday’s tilt with right knee pain. The 32-year-old backstop figures to avoid the injured list for the moment. Jacob Stallings will handle the catching duties with David Bañuelos coming up to join the club’s taxi squad in case of an emergency.

It’s not known when the injury occurred. The 32-year-old has been replaced by Jacob Stallings. There should be more info on Sanchez’s availability soon, but the Orioles may need to make a move just based on the plethora of injuries that have occurred behind the plate.

Sanchez victimized Rangers’ right-hander Jacob deGrom for his 381-foot (105.0 mph EV) two-run shot in the fourth inning, pulling the Orioles to within a run at 3-2. That would be as close as they would get. The 32-year-old backstop finished the night 1-for-3 and is now hitting .259/.330/.469 with five homers and 24 RBI in 91 plate appearances on the season.

Sanchez’ home run was his fourth of the year. He hit a two-run shot off Eric Orze in the fifth inning. The 32-year-old has transitioned into a backup backstop in the last few years and excelled in the role. He’s currently seeing regular at-bats with Adley Rutschman (oblique) on the injured list. That makes Sanchez relevant in two-catcher formats as long as he’s hitting like this.

Sanchez’ home run was his second of the year. His slam off Connor Brogdon in the seventh inning put the Orioles ahead 9-2 and iced the game. Sanchez doesn’t have much fantasy value as the Orioles’ backup catcher, but he hit the ball well on his rehab assignment and has started off hot since coming off the IL on Saturday.

Sánchez made his return from the injured list and got the start at designated hitter, batting seventh on Saturday. The 32-year-old slugged his first home run of the season for the Orioles, taking Tyler Anderson deep for a solo shot in the sixth inning.

The hard-hitting 32-year-old backstop has been sidelined since late April due to inflammation in his right wrist. He tore the cover off the ball on his minor league rehab assignment, slashing .364/.417/.818 with three homers and eight RBI in only 22 plate appearances. He’ll give the Orioles’ offense a boost against left-handed pitching. Maverick Handley was optioned to Triple-A in a corresponding move on Saturday.

Sánchez moved his rehab assignment up to Triple-A a week ago and has done nothing but hit since coming to Norfolk. It’s only a matter of time before he’s back in Baltimore, where he will serve as a backup catcher and likely as a designated hitter against left-handed pitching.

Sánchez is likely to return to Baltimore by early next week at the latest. While he will take Maverick Handley’s spot on the roster as the backup catcher, there’s also a chance that he cuts into Coby Mayo’s at-bats as the designated hitter.

Sánchez and Laureano are both aiming to return to Baltimore’s lineup by the end of the week. The pair have occupied reserve roles on the Orioles bench this season and are unlikely to make an impact for fantasy purposes.

Sánchez hits the shelf ahead of Monday’s game against the Yankees, his former team. It’ll be Maverick Handley coming up from Triple-A Norfolk to take his spot on Baltimore’s active roster as franchise cornerstone Adley Rutschman’s primary caddy.
