Shaw was everywhere in this one. He started the Cubs’ five-run rally in the third inning that chased Mets’ starter Jonah Tong from this game and homered to lead-off the following inning. He chipped in his 17th stolen base of the season later on as well and played fantastic defense at third base all night. It’s been a trying rookie season for him overall, but maybe a solid finish and postseason can help him carry positive momentum into 2026.

The homer was Shaw’s first since Aug. 20. He was 6-for-44 with no extra-base hits and even two caught stealings in two tries in his previous 15 games. Still, he’s been entrenched at third base, partly because Kyle Tucker’s absence opened up time in the outfield for Willi Castro but also because Castro just hasn’t been any good since being acquired from the Twins.

Shaw capped off the scoring in the contest with a two-run single off of Connor Seabold in the eighth inning, increasing the Cubs’ advantage to 6-1. It has been a rough year overall for the 23-year-old rookie third baseman, as Shaw is slashing just .227/.293/.390 with 11 homers, 39 RBI and 16 stolen bases in 382 plate appearances with the Cubs.

After an excellent first month after the All-Star break, Shaw appears to be fading some. The good news for him is that Willi Castro hasn’t done much of anything since being picked up at the deadline — he’s batting .159/.205/.246 in 73 plate appearances — giving the team little reason to contemplate a switch at third base.

Shaw smacked a one-out triple- off of Aaron Ashby in the sixth inning and scored on an RBI ground out off the bat of Michael Busch. He also drew a walk in the ballgame. The 23-year-old rookie third baseman has started to show signs of life at the dish and is now slashing .227/.292/.399 with 10 long balls, 32 RBI and 15 stolen bases (in 18 attempts) on the season.

While the rest of the Cubs’ lineup has gone cold, Shaw has finally gotten hot. This homer was his fourth in his last five starts and he’s jumped up from a .636 OPS to a .697 OPS over that same span. Go figure it begins to click for him after the Cubs went out and got Willi Castro at the trade deadline, but they’ll certainly continue to give him run at the hot corner while he’s hitting like this.

Shaw got the Cubs on the board and pulled them even at two runs apiece with his 379-foot (98.2 mph EV) two-run blast off of Sonny Gray in the fifth inning. That would be the extent of the Cubs’ offense in the ballgame. He struck out in each of his other two plate appearances in the game. For the season, the 23-year-old rookie third baseman is now hitting .228/.292/.392 with nine homers, 30 RBI and 14 stolen bases in 295 plate appearances.

Shaw’s homer was a 392-foot shot that left the bat at 102.6 mph for his eighth big fly of the season. The rookie has now gone 19-for-57 (.333) in 18 games since the All-Star break with six home runs, 11 runs scored,12 RBI, and three steals. It seems like he might sit once or twice a week for Willi Castro, but Shaw being in the lineup gives the Cubs a much better chance to win.

Shaw blasted a game-tying 396-foot (102.6 mph EV) solo shot off of Zack Littell in the fifth inning. Unfortunately, it wound up being the Cubs’ lone tally in the ballgame. The 23-year-old third baseman has had a rough rookie campaign at the plate, slashing a dismal

Willi Castro has been activated for today’s game, but he’s not in the lineup. It’ll be interesting to see how the Cubs approach third base now that they have a viable alternative. Shaw was a great disappointment in the first half, but he’s hit .359/.375/.744 with four homers in 12 games since the break. It’d seem to be worth sticking with him for now and using Castro as more of a utilityman, but Castro is too useful not to have in the lineup the majority of the time.

Shaw has four homers and nine RBI in 21 plate appearances over his last seven games (five starts), which might be altering some thoughts in Chicago. There was no doubt a week ago that the Cubs would bring in a third baseman at the deadline. Now they can at least consider focusing more on pitching, what with Shaw having quickly raised his OPS from .558 to .654 in eight days.

It looks to be nothing more than a routine night off for the struggling 23-year-old third baseman. Vidal Brujan will start in his place and will bat ninth against White Sox’ right-hander Adrian Houser at Rate Field in Chicago.

The rookie third baseman started the scoring with an RBI infield single in the second inning. He then swiped second base as part of a double steal with Justin Turner. Shaw also reached on a bunt single to start the seventh inning and scored on an RBI knock off the bat of Seiya Suzuki. With his two-hit attack, the 23-year-old is now slashing .221/.291/.324 with four homers, 20 RBI and 13 stolen bases on the season.

Shaw was one of the few bright spots for Chicago in an otherwise forgettable loss at Wrigley Field, going deep for the second time in his last three games when he took Royals starter Noah Cameron deep in the second inning of this one.

Shaw smacked a leadoff single off of Lucas Giolito to open the fifth inning and swiped second base, but the Cubs were unable to cash him in from there. The 23-year-old has been a major disappointment relative to expectations this season, slashing just .200/.277/.281 with two homers, 15 RBI, 12 stolen bases and a 45/21 K/BB ratio in 235 plate appearances.

Shaw is 1-for-27 this month, leaving him at .198/.276/.280 overall. Expectations are that the Cubs will trade for a third baseman prior to the deadline, and while it’s probably too late for Shaw to stop that now, a little hot streak here would give them something to think about.

Shaw takes a seat on Wednesday night amid a brutal 17-for-101 slump that includes only one homer and six steals over his last 30 games. It’ll be veteran speedster Jon Berti getting a shot at the hot corner. It feels inevitable that the Cubs are going to bring in some extra third base depth at the trade deadline in a few weeks.

The Cubs don’t really have anyone to replace Shaw at the moment, but they’re almost certainly going to have to upgrade at third base before the deadline. This is Shaw’s fifth straight hitless start, and he’s batting .159/.230/.234 in his last 32 games.

On a night where both starters and both team’s bullpens were brilliant, the Cubs finally broke through and put a run up in the home half of the 10th inning. Michael Busch started it with a ground out to shortstop that advanced Nico Hoerner to third base. Shaw then followed by smacking a 1-0 cutter deep enough into center field to bring home the game’s only run. He finished the night 0-for-3 and is hitting just .218/.299/.309 with two homers, 14 RBI and 10 stolen bases in what has been a disappointing rookie campaign for the 23-year-old third baseman.

Mooney reports that Jed Hoyer, the Cubs’ president of baseball operations, has insinuated that the Cubs plan to be aggressive at the deadline to capitalize on their strong season. Shaw’s “defense has been spectacular, and his offensive production has been lacking,” which means the Cubs could look to add a more consistent option at third base for the playoff push.

Credit to the Cubs for fighting back in this one after falling behind 7-0 by the fourth inning. Shaw was the key contributor to their comeback, with a two-run double in the seventh inning and then another RBI double in the ninth which forced Houston to bring Josh Hader into the game they were once leading by seven runs. It’s been a trying rookie season for Shaw with just a .615 OPS. This was also the first time he’s had an extra-base hit in eight games.

A rough day against Paul Skenes is no cause for alarm, but Shaw has now had three hitless games in a row and has managed just two singles and one walk in 23 plate appearances over his last six games. The Cubs aren’t about to go back to Jon Berti and Vidal Brujan at third, but if Shaw continues to struggle to hit the ball hard, acquiring a stopgap in July might be an option.

The 391-foot shot left his bat at 107.6 mph, matching his hardest-hit ball as a major leaguer. It’s actually the first homer by a Cubs third baseman this year, as Shaw’s first homer came as a pinch-hitter. The Cubs are also without a homer from their second basemen, but Nico Hoerner is doing just fine there without one.

Shaw hustled out an infield single to open the second inning, then raced around to score on Ian Happ’s one-out RBI double. The 23-year-old then poked a single into center off of Zach Brzykcy in the seventh inning and swiped second base before getting stranded there. He also singled and scored in the ninth inning. Shaw has struggled so far in his rookie campaign, slashing .248/.331/.336 with just one homer, seven RBI, six stolen bases and a 27/14 K/BB ratio over his first 127 plate appearances.

Shaw reached on an infield single to open the third inning, swiped second base and scored the game’s first run on an RBI single by Seiya Suzuki. He also reached on a fielder’s choice in the fourth inning and thieved second base once more before being stranded there. The 23-year-old third baseman then played the role of hero in the 11th, smacking a single into right field off of Tyler Kinley that plated the winning run and sent the Cubs’ home faithful into a frenzy. He has been locked in since returning from Triple-A and needs to be rostered in all mixed leagues at least until he shows any signs of cooling down.

Patience pays off. Shaw is starting to look like the top prospect fantasy managers were envisioning back on draft day, hitting .346 (9-for-26) with five doubles and two steals in seven games since returning from an early-season demotion to Triple-A Iowa. The 23-year-old has looked comfortable at the dish and will continue batting near the bottom of Chicago’s lineup as he acclimates to life in the majors.

It’s great to see Shaw, who had 31 steals in the minors last year, doing some running in his first game back in the majors. He swiped third as part of a double steal with Kyle Tucker in the seventh tonight.

The Cubs aren’t going to thrust Shaw into a prominent lineup spot right out of the gate and will instead allow him to get his feet wet again at the bottom of the order. The 23-year-old top prospect responded extremely well to an early-season demotion to Triple-A Iowa by hitting .286/.409/.560 with six homers and five steals in 24 games. He’ll have an opportunity to play everyday at the hot corner with Chicago and offers legitimate five-category fantasy upside. We’re certainly hoping the minor league reset was what he needed to get back on track since he’s certainly talented enough to make a significant impact for fantasy purposes.
