Riley Greene and Gleyber Torres also went deep for the Tigers. Báez pulled a homer just foul prior his RBI single in the fifth. He then came back with a two-run blast the following inning, as the Tigers overcame a 3-0 deficit by scoring seven runs between the fifth and sixth. The homer was Báez’s first in the postseason since a two-homer NLCS Game 4 in 2017. He had been limited to one RBI through six games this October. With the Tigers’ win, the series will return to Seattle for a decisive Game 5 on Friday. Tarik Skubal will start with the Tigers, while the Mariners could turn to either George Kirby or Luis Castillo.

Báez clubbed a go-ahead three-run homer off of Jose De Leon in the top half of the fourth inning, giving the Tigers a 3-1 lead. Unfortunately, that lead would be wiped out in the following half inning and the Tigers wouldn’t score again in the ballgame. He struck out in each of his other three plate appearances. The 32-year-old finishes the 2025 season hitting .257/.282/.398 with 12 homers, 57 RBI and five stolen bases in 436 plate appearances.

Báez is available off the bench, but remains out of the lineup after fouling a ball off his forehead during Friday’s game, which resulted in some swelling around his left eye. He’s day-to-day for now and should return to Detroit’s lineup at some point in their upcoming series against the Guardians. It’ll be Zach McKinstry making another start at shortstop in his absence.

Báez was lifted from Friday’s game after fouling a ball off of his head. Hinch noted that the versatile 32-year-old is not in the concussion protocol and was fortunate to have avoided a more serious injury. It sounds like he should return to action in a day or two.

Báez somehow fouled a ball that hit him right between the eyes on his forehead and immediately dropped to the ground in pain. Given his concussion issues, the Tigers were never going to take any chances and removed him from the game immediately, bringing in Trey Sweeney to finish the at-bat. He’ll surely need to pass through the concussion protocol before he is cleared to return to action.

Báez capped off a five-run uprising in the opening inning with a two-out, run-scoring double off of Pierson Ohl. He then added a sacrifice fly in the third inning that extended the Tigers’ lead to 7-0. He also singled in the sixth inning but never advanced from there. For the season, the versatile 32-year-old is now slashing .271/.298/.429 with 11 homers, 49 RBI and five stolen bases across his 358 plate appearances.

Báez has been functioning as the team’s regular center fielder with both Parker Meadows and Matt Vierling sidelined once again. He’ll get a breather in this one though. Wenceel Pérez will slide over and cover center field and he’ll bat sixth against White Sox’ right-hander Yoendrys Gomez.

Báez has not started in center field since June 4th, but with Parker Meadows (quad) back on the IL, he will get another chance. Báez figures to rotate in center field with Matt Vierling but will also slide to shortstop when the Tigers want to use Zach McKinstry elsewhere. Of course, that could all change if the Tigers acquire a bat or two at the deadline.

Báez, who is starting at shortstop and batting eighth tonight, didn’t play Saturday or Monday because of soreness in the shoulder he hurt in June. He might continue to need maintenance days for a while longer.

Báez made an early exit from Sunday’s series finale against the Rangers after a flare-up of an existing left shoulder injury that he’s been playing through since late June. The versatile 32-year-old is officially day-to-day for now. He could sit out a couple additional games this week out of an abundance of caution, but it doesn’t sound like a significant concern at the moment. It’ll be Trey Sweeney taking over at shortstop on Monday night in his absence.

Báez has shouldered a heavy workload for the Tigers this season and made a couple of rare gaffes in the field on Thursday evening, so manager A.J. Hinch will give him a breather to reset. Zach McKinstry will slide over and cover shortstop and bat sixth for the Tigers against Guardians’ right-hander Slade Cecconi.

Báez, on the day that he celebrated 10 years of service time in the major leagues, celebrated by crushing a 407-foot (100.5 mph EV) solo shot off of Bailey Falter in the fifth inning that tied the game at 3-3. He then delivered an encore performance in the seventh with a 410-foot (102.2 mph EV) blast off of Carmen Mlodzinski that extended the Tigers’ advantage to 5-3. With his three-hit night, the versatile 32-year-old is now hitting .289/.324/.474 with nine long balls, 35 RBI and one stolen base on the season.

Báez, who was out on the play, tried a swim move with his left shoulder and seemed to be in pain afterwards, but he came out for the fourth and finished the game, even as the Reds turned it into an 11-1 blowout. Odds are this will prove to be nothing, but it seemed worth a mention anyway. Báez went 0-for-3 with a walk in the contest.

This feels like a routine day off for Báez, but it’s worth noting because Wenceel Pérez is starting in center field for the second straight day since coming off the IL. Báez played third on Tuesday, but it seems like he may need to fill a utility role to stay in the lineup, especially with Parker Meadows also nearing a return. Báez could play third base and second base going forward, and also fill in the outfield when they give some of the starters off days.

Báez, who had to be restrained by two players after the initial discussion with Phil Cuzzi, was correct that the curve he struck out on should have been ball four. It would have been his first walk in 13 days and sixth in 45 games this season.

Báez remains hot, and his two-run single in the third inning tied the game at 5-5. It was his second two-run single of the game, and it ups his season total to 18. He also scored a run, and Báez is now slashing an excellent .313/.352/.475 in what has easily been his best season with the Tigers. That’s quite the understatement.

Báez has swung the bat well, but the Tigers will give the veteran a day of rest for the middle contest against Los Angeles. Detroit’s outfield will consist of Zach McKinstry in left, Riley Greene in center and Kerry Carpenter in right with Colt Keith serving as designated hitter.

Where has this version of Báez been? It’s sure fun to see now, and fun to see him appear to enjoy the sport of baseball again. With the two-run homer, he’s now slashing .300/.337/.467 with three roundtrippers and 14 RBI over 90 at-bats. He’s gone deep in three straight games, and while it’s understandable if fantasy managers are skeptical, it’s also not crazy to think he’s capable of being a fantasy helper in 2025. Weirder things have happened, folks.
