Gorman last sat on Aug. 12. Alas, he didn’t much take advantage of his opportunity to be a lineup fixture during Arenado’s absence, hitting just .198/.298/.351 with five homers in 38 games since his own return from the injured list on Aug. 1. After following up a promising 2023 with two seasons as essentially a replacement-level performer, he’s not someone who should be penciled into the Cardinals’ 2026 lineup.

Injuries to Nolan Arenado and Brandon Donovan have really opened the door for Gorman and Thomas Saggese here, but the current results aren’t providing a lot of hope that either will be a quality regular for the Cardinals next season. Gorman’s power just doesn’t quite make up for his inability to hit for average and his mediocre defense. He’s batting .214/.313/.396. Saggese, who committed two errors today, is hitting .254/.296/.333 in 204 plate appearances.

Gorman got the Cardinals on the scoreboard with his 415-foot (110.7 mph EV) two-run shot off of Mitch Keller in the fourth inning, but that only pulled them to within six runs of the Pirates. That would be Gorman’s only hit in the ballgame. The 25-year-old infielder has had a disappointing season at the dish for the Cardinals, slashing just .228/.329/.426 with 13 homers and 42 RBI in 307 plate appearances.

It’s Hoffman’s first time in the majors. The Phillies got the 28-year-old from the Rangers in a minor deal in June, and he had since posted a 3.32 ERA and a 27/11 K/BB in 19 innings for Lehigh Valley. With Jose Alvarado due back from suspension tomorrow, Hoffman’s stay could be a very short one.

McLean authored a brilliant performance in his big-league debut on Friday against the Mariners, piling up eight strikeouts over 5 1/3 scoreless frames. He topped out at 97 mph on his fastball and his signature sweeper was on point throughout the contest. The 24-year-old righty made enough of an impression that he’ll keep his spot in New York’s rotation until further notice. There are some lingering command issues, which showed up with four free passes during Friday’s outing, in addition to some workload concerns down the home stretch. However, McLean offers enough strikeout upside to be fantasy-relevant in all formats over the final six weeks. He should be rostered in all fantasy leagues.

McLean will make his highly-anticipated major-league debut on Saturday afternoon at Citi Field with a favorable matchup against the Mariners. The 24-year-old has rapidly ascended into one of the game’s premier pitching prospects, posting a sparkling 2.45 ERA with a 127/50 K/BB ratio over 113 2/3 innings (21 appearances, 18 starts) between Triple-A Syracuse and Double-A Binghamton this season. His fastball/sweeper combo already flashes borderline elite, giving him the swing-and-miss stuff to make an immediate fantasy impact. While workload management looms as a possible late-season hurdle, McLean’s talent and opportunity make him a must-roster arm in all fantasy formats.

McLean is the Mets’ top pitching prospect and the 37th-ranked prospect in baseball, according to MLB Pipeline. The 24-year-old has a 2.45 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, and 127/50 K/BB ratio in 113 2/3 innings between Double-A and Triple-A this season. A former two-way player, McLean has taken off since focusing on pitching. He boasts an upper-90s fastball that can miss bats up in the zone and a sinker that induces lots of groundballs. He also misses bats with an elite sweeper and uses an 89 mph cutter to bridge the gap between that and his fastballs. McLean has a true six-pitch mix and has the fantasy upside to be added in all league types. The only concern is that he has already surpassed his career-high in innings, so it’s unclear how deep the Mets are going to let him go in games or how long he will remain a regular starter in the rotation.

The Mets recently moved Frankie Montas to the bullpen but have yet to announce his replacement in the rotation. Sproat started last Saturday, and McLean started on Sunday, so both of them would be an option. While McLean has been the more dynamic pitcher in Triple-A, Sproat has fewer innings concerns and could provide depth that McLean might not be able to. Sproat was a starter for the University of Florida and has thrown plenty of innings in a season many times, while McLean is a former two-way player who is already coming up on his career-high innings. The choice for the Mets may come down to innings or upside.

McLean walked three and struck out seven while throwing 47 of his 74 pitches for strikes. The three walks are not ideal, but McLean could have gone deeper into this game since he threw 96 pitches his last time out. This suggests that the Mets are being cautious with his innings and could hint at potential MLB usage in the future. McLean has a 2.78 ERA in 87 1/3 innings at Triple-A, so there isn’t much left for him to prove at the level.

The Cardinals got something started with two outs in the seventh inning as Jordan Walker singled and swiped second base to get himself in scoring position. Gorman then battled back from an 0-2 hole against Shota Imanaga to line a single into right field that plated Walker with the go-ahead run that proved to be the difference. The 25-year-old infielder finished the night 1-for-3 and is now hitting .228/.315/.411 with 10 home runs and 34 RBI.

McLean threw 58 of his 96 pitches for strikes while registering a 34 percent whiff rate and 30 percent CSW. His fastball sat 95.1 mph and hit 97.3 mph and got seven whiffs on 11 swings. His sweeper also induced a handful of whiffs, and McLean showed the type of stuff that could make him valuable for the Mets down the stretch.

Gorman put the Cardinals on the board with a two-run blast off Emmet Sheehan in the second inning. He later led off the seventh with a base hit and scored on a single by Iván Herrera. The 25-year-old slugger is hitting .227/.311/.417 with ten homers and 33 RBI across 241 plate appearances.

The 25-year-old slugger had been shelved since just before the All-Star break due to pain in his lower back. On the season, he’s slashing an underwhelming .219/.310/.408 with nine homers, 29 RBI and one stolen base across 226 plate appearances.

McLean struck out six and walked three while throwing 58 of his 91 pitches for strikes. The 24-year-old now holds a 3.01 ERA at Triple-A this season and has moved up the pecking order among Mets starting pitching options with Blade Tidwell being sent to San Francisco. With Tylor Megill (elbow), Griffin Canning (Achilles), and Paul Blackburn (shoulder) all hurt, McLean might currently be the sixth starter on the Mets.

Gorman has been battling a lingering back issue for over a week at this juncture. The 25-year-old infielder will get some extra time off to rest and recover. As fantasy managers are aware, back issues can be tricky matters, but we’re not anticipating a lengthy absence here. It’ll be Thomas Saggese coming up from Triple-A Memphis to take his spot on the Cardinals’ bench.

DiComo didn’t mention what role McLean would play, but with Kodai Senga and Sean Manaea coming off the injured list last week, it’s more likely McLean would help the Mets out of the bullpen. The 23-year-old has a 2.52 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, and 65/26 K/BB ratio in 60 2/3 innings at Triple-A Syracuse since being promoted after just five starts at Double-A to begin the season.

Gorman got the start today even though the Cardinals were facing a left-handed opener, and he actually hit homer off said opener, Aaron Bummer. He’s batting .182/.288/.386 in 52 plate appearances against lefties. That’s not a disaster, but the real problem is that he’s still only at .230/.316/.414 against righties; he needs to be better with the platoon advantage to justify his spot, especially since he’s not helping defensively.

McLean has strung together back-to-back double-digit strikeout performances, piling up 20 strikeouts over 11 innings during that span. The 23-year-old righty has been one of the fastest-rising pitching prospects in the fantasy landscape this season with a stellar 2.17 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 95/38 K/BB ratio across 87 innings (16 appearances, 14 starts) between Triple-A Syracuse and Double-A Binghamton. There’s a chance he gets a look later this season with the Mets, but their rotation mix remains extremely crowded.

Gorman’s three-run homer off Logan Allen in the first was the only scoring in the game through six innings. He later walked and scored a second run in the eighth. The homer was his second of the year against a left-hander. He’s 6-for-36 (.167) against them overall, but then he’s been in the lineup against a southpaw only eight times.

Gorman did his damage in the fourth inning, crushing a 2-1 fastball from Jameson Taillon for a 432-foot (106.5 mph EV) game-tying solo shot. He also singled twice in the ballgame. Hopefully this is just the type of game that he needs to get his bat going as he’s slashing an anemic .226/.322/.418 on the season with six homers and 21 RBI in his 171 plate appearances.

Hoffman had a 3.88 ERA and 77 strikeouts in 58 innings for Triple-A Norfolk in Baltimore’s organization last year. There was a chance for him to win a spot in Texas’ bullpen this year, but he instead headed to Triple-A Round Rock, where he has posted a 5.91 ERA. He should serve as organizational depth in Philadelphia

Gorman’s homer made it a 7-1 game in the fifth and ended Jose Quintana’s afternoon. With Brendan Donovan missing the last four games, Gorman has now gotten to start six straight games. Going into this stretch, he’d started just six of the Cardinals’ previous 21 games. He’s batting .321/.424/.714 in 33 plate appearances this month, so one imagines the Cardinals will stick with him after Donovan returns, which could result in less playing time for Jordan Walker, Alec Burleson and Pedro Pagés (since Iván Herrera would likely do less DHing).

Gorman has started four of the last five games for the Cardinals, playing third base, second base and designated hitter. In his last 10 games, Gorman is hitting .435 with two home runs, five RBI and a 7/2 K/BB ratio. With Brendan Donovan dealing with toe discomfort, there could be some extra playing time for Gorman in the immediate future.

Gorman’s extra-base hit was a 111.6-mph double that bounced over the wall in right to lead off the bottom of the ninth in a 1-1 game. Gorman was then removed for a pinch-runner, who came around to score on a Nolan Arenado flyball single that would have been a routine out if the Dodgers hadn’t been using a five-man infield in a do-or-die situation. Gorman was starting for just the second time this week, as Arenado had the day off before his pinch-hitting appearance. He’s gone 7-for-16 with a homer in his four starts over the last two weeks, but the Cardinals don’t seem that interested in finding more playing time for him.

Gorman last started last Tuesday when he was a late insertion for an ailing Brendan Donovan. He gets to play tonight because Iván Herrera is starting at catcher. Things don’t figure to get any better for him when Jordan Walker comes off the IL, something that figures to happen within the next week.

McLean turned in an extremely impressive Triple-A debut with his four-seam, cutter and sweeper mix generated 10 swinging strikes and he recorded an elite 36 percent CSW. The 23-year-old former third-round pick is one of the fastest-rising pitching prospects in the fantasy landscape this season, reaching the doorstep of the majors after posting a 1.37 ERA and 30/12 K/BB ratio across 26 1/3 innings (five starts) to open the year at Double-A Binghamton. The sweeper is a true above-average offering and gives him a real shot at success in the majors. There’s a chance he’s ready to pitch in New York at some point in the second half.

McLean is the fifth-ranked prospect in the Mets system, according to Baseball America and MLB Pipeline. The 23-year-old pitched 26 1/3 innings with Double-A Binghamton and posted a 1.37 ERA with 30 strikeouts. He has a deep arsenal, led by his sweeper, and could emerge onto mid-season Top 100 lists with continued strong performance at Syracuse.
