It’ll be Ben Rice drawing the start at catcher with Wells receiving another day off. The 25-year-old backstop is dealing with artery damage in his left index finger that leads to an intermittent cold sensation and discoloration. The positive news is that additional testing, including an invasive procedure, ruled out any potential blood clots or an aneurysm. It seems like he’ll avoid the injured list and there’s a chance he’s back in New York’s lineup at some point later this week.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone told reporters Wells underwent testing that ruled out any potential blood clots and that the issue hasn’t impacted his on-field performance. He added that the 25-year-old backstop will remain on the bench through Tuesday’s game against the Blue Jays, but could potentially return on Wednesday. It’ll be J.C. Escarra and Ben Rice handling the catching duties in his absence. There’s always a risk Wells could require a trip to the injured list if the issue persists, but it sounds like there’s optimism he’ll be ready to return at some point later this week. Fantasy managers should consider him day-to-day for now.

The Yankees fell behind 3-2 in the top of the seventh tonight, only to rally for 10 in the bottom of the inning. Wells’ single off Adrian Morejon opened the scoring that inning and his slam off Wandy Peralta finished it. It was Wells’ first career grand slam and his first five-RBI game as a major leaguer. He also picked up his second career stolen base tonight.

Despite a hot spring, Wells has gotten off to a slow start and is slashing just .213/.275/.450 on the season with 15 RBI. However, today is a good reminder of what he’s capable of doing, and we saw last season that he will endure some cold streaks over the course of a long season. We’d still be holding in almost all league types.

Yankees’ skipper Aaron Boone had said that Thursday’s absence was a scheduled day off and not related. The expectation is that he’ll be feeling better and should be able to return to the Yankees’ lineup in a day or two. J.C. Escarra will draw another start behind the plate and will bat sixth against Drew Rasmussen and the Rays on Friday night.

Wells drove in the Yankees’ first run in the ballgame as he worked a bases-loaded walk off of Angel Zerpa with two outs in the sixth inning. He then raced around to score on a three-run double by Jasson Domínguez. The overall slash line looks putrid at .196/.276/.451 to start the season, but the 25-year-old backstop has at least contributed three long balls and eight RBI.
