McKinstry has been battling a few ailments that he sustained when diving headfirst into home plate on Wednesday, so he’ll sit down for a bit to fully heal up. Hao-Yu Lee was recalled from Triple-A Toledo in a corresponding move and will make his big league debut on Friday against the Red Sox.

While none of the injuries seem overly serious, Hinch did say, “We’re going to continue to get him looked at even further.” That could mean a short trip to the injured list is in McKinstry’s future.

Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said afterwards that McKinstry was going to get Thursday’s series finale off anyways. The versatile 30-year-old is officially day-to-day after a collision with Royals rookie Jac Caglianone led to his early exit. It’ll likely be Wenceel Pérez getting another start on Thursday in his place.

McKinstry appeared to suffer an injury when collided with Jac Caglianone for the second time in the contest during the seventh inning. He finished 1-for-2 at the plate and was replaced by Wenceel Pérez, who promptly delivered a go-ahead homer in the eighth inning. There should be an update on his status after the game.

McKinstry was a surprising AL All-Star last year, but he’s back searching for a role this season because of Kevin McGonigle’s arrival. He was on the bench for four of the Tigers’ first nine games, even though all of those came against righties. He has, however, started the last three in a row, playing right field twice and second base once. Since he’s hitting just .222/.276/.370 in 29 at-bats, he could continue to sit semi-frequently against righties, and he definitely won’t be playing versus lefties.

McKinstry hit out a Will Warren sweeper to raise his spring OPS to .929 in 17 at-bats. He figures to be a super-sub again and should see plenty of time at both third base and shortstop, as he did in 2025.

McKinstry was an All-Star last season after hitting .259/.333/.438 in 144 games with 12 home runs and 19 steals. As of now, McKinstry would figure to enter the season as the Tigers’ starting third baseman. He’s arbitration-eligible next year as well.

McCambley, 26, had a 2.90 ERA and an 83/22 K/BB in 62 innings out of the pen between Double- and Triple-A last season. He throws in the mid-90s, but he uses his cutter more than his fastball and also attacks hitters with a slider. It’s package that could make him adequate in middle relief.

McKinstry also failed to cut off a throw from left field in the third, resulting in a senseless error for Riley Greene in a two-run inning for the Mariners. He’s now 1-for-19 in October, which could open the door for the Tigers to try someone else. However, if Colt Keith isn’t ready to play third base after his rib-cage issue, the team will probably just stay the course.

The Tigers’ struggles with runners in scoring position have been well documented — and were at play for most of the night in Game 1 on Saturday — but McKinstry came through with an RBI single up the middle off of Carlos Vargas to scratch out the go-ahead run that proved to be the difference. McKinstry finished the night 1-for-5 with a pair of strikeouts, but he delivered the biggest hit of the Tigers season thus far.

There are no real surprises here. The Tigers are using the same lineup on Tuesday that they used against most right-handed pitching in the final weeks of the season. Javier Baez will play shortstop and bat ninth, which means Trey Sweeney will be on the bench. Andy Ibanez figures to come in for McKinstry if the Guardians bring in a left-handed reliever.

It’s a return to the lineup for McKinstry after he missed three games in a row with upper-back stiffness. The 30-year-old’s return also sees Weencel Perez get the night off and Kerry Carpenter get a rare-ish start in right field.

There should be a clearer idea of McKinstry’s status once he undergoes further evaluation and treatment. The big concern here is that back issues can be tricky matters and tend to linger beyond initial expectations. The uber-versatile 30-year-old has put together the best season of his career with 11 homers and 19 steals in 130 contests. It’ll be Trey Sweeney taking over at shortstop on Tuesday night at Yankee Stadium.

McKinstry is hitting just .163/.230/.288 in 87 plate appearances since his surprising All-Star appearance. The Tigers like having Trey Sweeney’s glove at short and they’ve been content with Colt Keith at third base, so McKinstry might continue losing at-bats.

We figured McKinstry’s .627 OPS in May would be more representative of the rest of his season than his .888 mark from April, but he’s bounced back nicely this month, coming in at .938 so far. He also has seven steals after collecting only three over the first two months. His exit velocity numbers don’t entirely back up his success so far, but to date, he’s been one of the two best position players on one of baseball’s two best teams.
