The first significant move of the Paul DePodesta era. Toglia’s run with the Rockies comes to a close after just 280 games over the last four seasons where he managed to wallop 42 home runs but also struck out a whopping 373 times over 1,067 plate appearances. The 27-year-old first baseman received plenty of opportunities but failed to cut back on the strikeouts, whiffing just over 39 percent of the time at the major-league level this past season. Toglia’s immense over-the-fence power upside remains intact but he’ll need to revamp his swing and approach to have any shot at sustained success in the big leagues.

The Rockies tried to give Toglia another shot in the wake of the injury to Warming Bernabel, but after striking out in each of his three plate appearances on Thursday they chose to send him back to Triple-A in favor of Blaine Crim. He’ll continue to work on his swing at the Triple-A level.

Toglia, who was brought back to the majors because of Warming Bernabel’s injury, is now hitting just .190/.258/.353 on the season. He has 132 strikeouts and 58 hits in 337 plate appearances. He’s probably going to get knocked off the Rockies’ 40-man this winter and deservedly so, but it’ll be interesting to see if a competent organization can turn things around for him.

Toglia returns to the big leagues for Tuesday’s game against the Dodgers after rookie first baseman Warming Bernabel required a trip to the concussion injured list. The 27-year-old all-or-nothing slugger is still capable of connecting for the occasional homer, but he continues to strike out at an astronomical rate.

Toglia batted just .195 (22-for-113) with five homers and 45 strikeouts in 31 games after returning to the big leagues back on June 16. The 26-year-old slugger’s all-or-nothing approach hasn’t translated to results at the highest level this season and it doesn’t appear there’s a path for him to regular at-bats in Colorado moving forward.

It was his lone hit, but he did also have a couple of hard-hit flyouts. The Rockies want to give Warming Bernabel a shot, but they pretty obviously don’t trust him at third base, even though he was still playing more there than at first in the minors. That means bench time for Toglia, at least unless he can get hot. The homer tonight was his 11th in 329 plate appearances. but he’s still batting just .194 with a 126/27 K/BB.

There’s no shame in having a tough day against Joe Ryan, but the 0-for, his third in his last four games, dropped Toglia’s season average back down to .199. He’s hit .210 with four homers and 11 RBI since returning from the minors last month, but most of that production came in a big first series back against the Nationals, and he has just one homer and five RBI in his last 23 games. The Rockies could decide to give Warming Bernabel a try at first if this keeps up.

Toglia’s home run was No. 10 on the year for him. The 26-year-old first baseman crushed a two-run shot off Dan Altavilla in the fifth inning. Since returning from the minors on June 16, Toglia is hitting .250/.311/.485 with four homers in 74 plate appearances. It’s not enough to be a mixed-league fixture, but it’s a big improvement.

Toglia smacked a one-out double off of Adrian Houser in the fifth inning and scored the Rockies’ first run on a throwing error by Josh Rojas. He also drew a pair of walks in the ballgame, finishing the evening 1-for-1 officially. On the season, the 26-year-old slugger is now hitting .206/.271/.375 with nine homers and 28 RBI in 273 plate appearances with the Rockies this season.

The switch-hitter is riding a modest four-game hitting streak, but he has also gone just 8-for-45 (.178) with two RBIs and no home runs over an 11-game stretch that included eight games in Coors Field and three games in a hitter-friendly park in Milwaukee. We knew Toglia would struggle with batting average, but if he’s not going to take advantage of extended stretches at Coors Field, it’s hard to argue for keeping Toglia on your rosters. Orlando Arcia will start at first base and bat seventh on Thursday.

Toglia put the first run of the game on the board with a double in the first inning to bring Hunter Goodman home from first base. He drove in a second run with another double in the third and doubled again in the fifth for his third of the game. The 26-year-old first baseman is 10-for-33 (.303) with three homers and three doubles since he was recalled from Triple-A on June 16.

It was 10-2 before the Nationals’ long-dead offense almost made it interesting in the ninth. The multihomer game was Toglia’s second of his career. He hit three against the Mets last July 14, but he’d never hit more than one otherwise. He’s 4-for-9 since his recall Tuesday, raising his average from .194 to .205. He’s worth considering for mixed-league rosters in need of power.

Keston Hiura was bumped from the roster to make room. Toglia, demoted May 31 after hitting .194/.266/.349 over the first two months, figures to get his starting job back after coming in at .273/.353/.568 with three homers in 11 minor league games. He still might wind up hitting enough to help in mixed leagues — he was certainly helpful for a time last year — but there’s probably no urgent need to grab him right away.

Toglia is hitting .324/.366/.676 with three homers and 14 RBI in nine games since being sent down by the Rockies and seems to be well on his way to earning another opportunity. After all, as bad as Toglia was in hitting .190/.260/.342 in the majors this season, that’s still considerably better than what the Rockies have gotten from their other first basemen. They have a combined line of .167/.189/.283 in 74 plate appearances.

Power has never been an issue for Toglia, and he’s sure to tear the cover off the ball at Triple-A. However, making enough contact against big league pitching has remained a concern for him, and unless he can get his strikeout rate down, he may struggle to establish himself as a regular MLB starter.

This one felt inevitable after Toglia struck out in 39.1 percent of 207 plate appearances over 54 games to open the season, which resulted in a calamitous .194/.266/.349 triple-slash line. The 26-year-old all-or-nothing slugger will retreat to the minors and attempt to iron things out away from the spotlight. There was legitimate reason for optimism for fantasy purposes after last year’s 25-homer, 10-steal breakthrough campaign. Unfortunately, his plate skills have cratered to the point that he became unplayable for the Rockies and fantasy managers.

The 35-year-old right-hander is currently on a minor league rehab assignment while recovering from a right shoulder strain. Nothing has changed in his prognosis, this was done as a procedural move to free up a spot on the team’s 40-man roster for Ryan Fitzgerald who had his contract selected on Friday.

Toglia’s homer is the fourth of the season. The 26-year-old also drew a walk while improving his slash to a still ugly .215/.273/.372 over the Rockies’ first 35 games. The home park is nice and Toglia certainly has some solid pop in his bat, but he doesn’t do the other things well enough to make him a quality fantasy option.

Toglia followed his three-hit game with a two-run homer in his first at-bat Saturday off Hunter Greene to put the Rockies on the board in the second inning. He later added a base hit in the sixth. The 26-year-old first baseman is hitting .220/.258/.330 with two homers, 11 RBI, and two steals across 97 plate appearances.

Tonkin will likely need a good handful of appearances before he’s ready to rejoin the Minnesota bullpen. The 6-foot-7 right-hander will be a mid-inning option for the Twins’ relief group whenever he’s ready; likely around the end of April.

Toglia’s grand salami came off Bobby Miller, and turned a 7-2 deficit into a 7-6 contest. The 26-year-old has been atrocious to begin 2025 and still holds a slash .172/.209/.266, but this was a friendly reminder to everyone but Miller that there is solid power in his left-handed swing.

Toglia’s streak of 106 consecutive starts at first base is over. The 26-year-old all-or-nothing slugger has gotten off to a brutal start at the dish, hitting .167 (10-for-60) with zero homers and one steal through 16 games. He’s struck out in a staggering 46 percent of his 63 plate appearances so far. It’ll be Kyle Farmer at first base on Tuesday night.
